Ontario dog owner sentenced after 9-year-old girl mauled in Newmarket

Police say a Newmarket, Ont. man has pleaded guilty to all charges after his three dogs rushed out of his house and mauled a nine-year-old girl who had come to view puppies for sale. The girl and her father were visiting the home on Jackson Court, near Davis Drive and Leslie Street, on July 27, 2023 when the three 'bulldog-type' dogs escaped their enclosure and attacked. Police said the girl was seriously injured and transported to hospital for treatment. Leslie Theodore Kovacs was charged with criminal negligence causing bodily harm and three counts under the Ontario Dog Owners' Liability Act at the time. In an update on Wednesday, police said that Kovacs pleaded guilty to all the charges and was sentenced to one year of house arrest and 15 months of probation. Kovacs is banned from owning, keeping, harbouring, or residing in a home with a dog for life and was issued a $5,000 fine. The dogs were euthanized after the attack, police said. Kovacs was also found to be in violation of a previously-issued muzzle order by Newmarket Animal Services, according to police. The animal agency told CTV News Toronto in 2023 that it had issued the muzzle order after a 'dog-on-dog' incident in September 2022. The order required the dogs to be muzzled anytime they left the property and tethered or confined by a six-foot fence when on Kovacs' property. A spokesperson for the animal agency said at the time that it continued to monitor the situation at Jackson Court after the order was issued when it found Kovacs was 'not compliant.' Police previously told CTV News Toronto that they had investigated at least two other animal complaints at the address, though no charges were laid at that time. 'York Regional Police and Newmarket Animal Services emphasize the importance of responsible pet ownership and the serious consequences of failing to control aggressive animals. The safety and well being of the community remain a top priority,' police said in a statement Tuesday.

Man pleads guilty to criminal negligence after girl injured in Newmarket, Ont., dog attack
Police in York Region say a man has pleaded guilty to multiple charges and has been handed a lifetime ban on dog ownership following a 2023 dog attack that left a nine-year-old girl severely injured. Police say the girl and her father had visited the man's home in Newmarket, Ont., on July 27, 2023 to view puppies for sale. They say when the two arrived, three bulldog-type dogs rushed out and attacked the girl without provocation, causing serious but non-life-threatening injuries. Police say the man was charged with criminal negligence causing bodily harm and three counts under the Ontario Dog Owners' Liability Act. They say the man was also found to have violated a muzzle order issued by Newmarket Animal Services, and the dogs were surrendered and euthanized after the attack. Police say the man pleaded guilty to all charges on Tuesday and he was sentenced to one year of house arrest, 15 months of probation, a $5,000 fine and a lifetime ban on owning, keeping or residing in a home with a dog.

Dog owner prosecuted after toddler viciously attacked in own front yard

Photo: 123RF An Auckland woman has been sentenced to community work after her two dogs seriously injured a toddler in an attack in his own front yard. The two-year-old was mauled by two roaming American bulldogs that came onto his South Auckland property in March last year. His shoulder blade was fractured, and he had several serious wounds to his head and neck from the "unprovoked and sustained" attack, the council said. The dogs continued to attack as the boy's mother lifted him to safety and other people tried to help. CCTV footage showed the attack only stopped when the dogs were removed by the owners' relatives and driven away, the council said. The toddler had to have multiple operations and a long stay in hospital. The dogs' owner Janna Faumui pleaded guilty to charges of owning dogs that attacked a person causing serious injury, the council said. The judge said he was considering a jail term, but Faumi did not have a previous criminal history, did not appear to be a threat to the community and had shown remorse. She was sentenced to 150 hours community work and told to pay $2000 in emotional harm reparation to the boy's family. Both the dogs were voluntarily handed over to the council and euthanised after the attack. Auckland Council said the case was a wake-up call and all dog owners should make sure they were well trained animals and never allowed to roam. Councillor Josephine Bartlett said dog owners had to understand those duties and would be prosecuted if they failed. "It is not okay for dogs to be roaming or uncontrolled. The trauma and injuries inflicted on this child were horrific and entirely preventable," she said.
