Masked thieves caught on camera during home invasion in Hollywood Hills
Three masked intruders were caught on camera breaking into a Hollywood Hills home late Thursday night while, unbeknownst to them, a family was inside, relaxing for the night. The thieves broke in after bypassing the front gate, which displayed a bold warning: 'This house is protected by God and a gun. Screw around and you'll meet both.' The break-in happened around 10:30 p.m. on May 29. Surveillance footage shows the thieves – wearing masks, gloves and hoodies – scaling a tall wall to reach the front entrance. They used a crowbar to smash through a glass panel and unlock the door from the inside. What the suspects didn't realize was that several residents were inside the house at the time in the downstairs rooms. The calm was abruptly shattered when the intruders made noise upstairs, prompting a near-confrontation. Security footage captured loud clamor – sounding comparable to gunfire – as the suspects ran off. However, despite the message on the sign, the homeowners did not fire any weapons during the incident. The residents had just returned from a trip to Mexico and deliberately waited to post vacation photos on social media. Still, they became targets. 'We heard loud footsteps upstairs… and then we heard even more shuffling,' said Chantel, one of the victims. She declined to share her last name. Chantel, an entrepreneur and artist, lives in the home with her family. 'How frightening was that for you?' KTLA's Chris Wolfe asked. 'Very frightening,' Chantel responded. 'I felt very violated, and then after watching the footage and seeing it was three of them – I was more shook at the thought that if they came here when we weren't here, and my 20-year-old daughter was here alone – that's what shook me up the most.' Her boyfriend's voice may have been what ultimately scared the intruders away. After a 911 call, LAPD officers arrived within minutes. 'I am just so glad that officers got here as quickly as they did,' said Alexis, a friend who was also at the scene. The suspects dropped their crowbar while fleeing. It was recovered by police and is now in evidence custody. Detectives are canvassing the neighborhood for additional security footage. Anyone with information about the crime is urged to contact the Los Angeles Police Department. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Watch: Crowds flee as burglar triggers smoke grenades at Claridge's Hotel in £190k jewellery heist attempt
This is the moment passers-by fled as a man set off smoke grenades in an attempt to steal £190,000 worth of jewels from London's iconic Claridge's Hotel. Clad in a balaclava and crash helmet, Jay McGinty, 37, arrived the hotel in Mayfair on a Vespa scooter and set down a smoke grenade, covering a hallway in thick black smoke, before attempting to break into a jewellery cabinet with a sledgehammer in March this year. However, the raid was thwarted when security staff held a revolving door shut, trapped McGinty inside, until police arrived. McGinty was sentenced to six years in jail after pleading guilty to one count of aggravated burglary at Southwark Crown Court on Thursday (29 May).

Thieves targeting Chicago homes under construction for tools and copper wiring
Homes under construction in the Logan Square neighborhood in Chicago are at the center of a string of burglaries. Thieves are targeting copper wiring and tools. Police said the thieves go through the back doors, kick open doors, or even walk in while workers are there. The burglaries all take place in the early evening hours, as workers typically are leaving for the day. "Locations that are under construction are typically easy targets," former Chicago Police First Deputy Supt. Anthony Riccio said With no cameras, lax security, and tools out in the open, Riccio said homes under construction are the perfect spot for thieves to target. In the last two weeks, four houses in Logan Square were burglarized; the thieves collecting copper wire and power tools between 4 p.m. and 6 p.m., according to police. "They want to get in there as soon as the employees, as soon as the workers leave, because they want to beat the other thieves who are also probably going to target the same location," Riccio said. What the burglars collect typically goes to places like scrap yards, pawn shops, and Facebook marketplace, according to Riccio. "Some of these guys can make up to $1,000 a day in doing these thefts," Riccio said. This week in Minneapolis, a team of thieves stole more than $1 million worth of copper wire from 450 city street lights, which left a neighborhood in the dark. Just this past March in Chicago's Lakeview neighborhood, a masked thief went into a worker's van to steal tools. The van's owner spotted the thief and drop-kicked him, prompting the thief to drop the tools and run away. On the city's Northwest Side, a Mayfair hardware store was hit multiple times last year. The thieves at one point loaded up expensive power tools in shopping carts. "In order to really prevent it, you do need to have some sort of physical security there," Riccio said. For homes under construction, Riccio said builders should use padlocks, flood lights, and security cameras. Those could help them in the long run if thieves come back again, which he said is more than likely. "The thieves know they have to replace them. They have to put the copper piping back in. They have to put the electrical wiring back in. So, a lot of times, the same location can get hit multiple times," he said. Police said, if anyone does encounter a thief at a home in the works, do not try to rationalize or confront them. Call 911 and try to get cameras installed.
