Deion Sanders' "cancer-free" announcement draws relief, gratitude across the sports world

Deion "Coach Prime" Sanders, head coach of the Colorado Buffaloes football team, announced for the first time publicly on Monday that he had been diagnosed with bladder cancer and that he is now considered "cancer-free." Sanders and his medical team spoke at a 40-minute news conference on Monday about his diagnosis and treatment at a news conference, where Sanders said he had no warning or risk factors associated with bladder cancer and urged people to get checked by a doctor early and often. "Men, everybody, get checked out," he pleaded, flanked by doctors. "Because if it wasn't for me getting tested for something else, they wouldn't have stumbled upon this. And make sure you get the right care, because without wonderful people like this, I probably wouldn't be sitting here today." Despite moments of brevity at the news conference, Sanders stressed the importance of cancer testing, getting emotional at times while speaking. "Get checked out," he repeated with emphasis. "It could've been a whole other gathering if I hadn't." Sanders thanked his medical team, God, and his family, as well as others who reached out with encouragement. "Randy Moss called me every other day to make sure I was straight," he said. "Randy Moss prayed for me, he and his wife told me what I need to be doing -- he's gone through some things very similar (...) he gave me so much strength and so much guidance and so much love, respect, and appreciation. Thank you, Randy, I really appreciate you." Figures from around the sports world expressed a range of reactions from relief that Sanders was now cancer-free to gratitude for his urging of others to be proactive about their health. "You LOVE to see it," former NFL quarterback Robert Griffin III wrote on X. "God's got your back always." Earvin "Magic" Johnson, the NBA Hall of Famer, tweeted, "I'm happy to hear that my friend Deion Sanders has been cleared of cancer. I'll be praying that God continues to bless him with good health and lifelong prosperity!" Michael Strahan, NFL Hall of Famer, wrote on X that he was "Proud of my brotha," and went on to praise his work as a coach and a mentor. "He has continued to fight and do it while using his platform to help others. Love you my man... and can't wait to see you back out there doing what you are meant to do, COACH!!" Strahan continued. "If you don't believe he's doing this for the love of the kids and giving young men and women an opportunity on and off the field, I respectfully ask you to please think again."

Deion Sanders linked to Chris Brown's ex Karreuche Tran after she was spotted with him during cancer treatment

Deion Sanders has sparked romance rumors with Karrueche Tran after the stunning actress and model was seen by his side in hospital before he recently underwent bladder surgery. Sanders, 57, revealed on Monday that he was forced to have his bladder removed earlier this year after being diagnosed with cancer. The Colorado football coach and NFL icon confirmed he is now cancer free following the op, which saw doctors completely eliminate the tumor before creating a new bladder. In a video shared on the family's YouTube channel, 'Well Off Media', Sanders is captured in his hospital room before undergoing the procedure - and an emotional Tran, 37, is sitting right next to him. The Hollywood star, who previously dated Chris Brown, is visibly upset in the clip while explaining what Deion is about to go through and why. 'We are at the hospital because we are dealing with...' she says before bursting into tears. Tran eventually continues: 'We are dealing with bladder cancer, and he is having his bladder removed, and they will create a new bladder with one of his intestines. This option was I guess the best because it fully removes the cancer to ensure that it doesn't come back because it was close to his muscle. 'So yeah, we are here to fully remove the bladder.' The camera then pans to Sanders on his phone before he adds about his NFL-rookie sons Shedeur and Shilo: 'I'm texting the boys. It's their first day of practice today, and I'm excited.' Deion and Karrueche have been linked for a number of months after they were spotted together eating on a lunch date earlier this year. Tran's most famous previous relationship came when she began dating R&B icon Brown back in 2011, before they briefly split when he reconnected with his ex-girlfriend Rihanna a year later. In 2013 the pair rekindled their romance for another two years, only for it to end on a sour note when Brown was accused of sending her threatening text messages and voicemails. A judge granted Tran a five-year restraining order against him in 2017 after she shared evidence of the messages in court, while she also alleged that he punched her in the stomach twice and pushed her down the stairs. She also briefly dated Migos rapper Quavo, which came before a longer-term relationship with former NFL star Victor Cruz from 2017-21. Tran previously dated R&B icon Chris Brown on-and-off for the best part of four years As for Sanders, he has been married twice to first wife Carolyn Chambers, with whom he had daughter Deiondra and son Deion Jr, before tying the knot again with Pilar Biggers-Sanders - the mother of Shilo, Shedeur and another daughter in Shelomi. Following his divorce from Pilar, Deion was also previously engaged to Tracey Edmonds before they called it off in 2019. In a press conference with his doctor on Monday, Sanders shared that he is now cancer-free after being diagnosed with bladder cancer earlier this year. 'You were such a blessing,' he said to Dr. Janet Kukreja, who was sat next to him. 'Guiding me to, taking me through, verbalizing every darn detail so that I can make an educated decision.'

Deion Sanders reveals bladder cancer diagnosis but says he's considered "cancer free" after treatment

Head Colorado Buffaloes football Coach Deion "Coach Prime" Sanders, along with his medical team, including representatives from CU Anschutz and UCHealth, spoke about his bladder cancer diagnosis on Monday morning for the first 2025 camp news conference. Sanders' doctor confirmed that his bladder was removed after the cancer diagnosis and they proceeded with the creation of a new bladder. She also said that Sanders is currently cancer-free. "We removed the tumor. It was very high-grade and invading through the bladder wall. Not into the muscle layer, something we call very high-risk, non-muscle invasive bladder cancer," said Dr. Janet Kukreja with CU Cancer Center at the University of Colorado Hospital. Sanders appeared in good spirits at the news conference, wearing a cowboy hat and overalls along with his signature sunglasses. "It has been a tremendous journey," said Sanders as he became emotional. "God is good... God is good... You have no idea." "I never once in this journey said, 'God, why me?'" Sanders said that no one knew about his cancer diagnosis, not even the team. He also said he will remain in his position as head coach for the football team. Kukreja said Sanders' outlook was "very good" and that they would keep him on surveillance with routine scans. She said that new bladders are created for patients using their own intestines. There has been speculation about his health after he hadn't been seen in public for some time after the end of spring practice in April. Sanders took to social media last month to say that he was OK. "Coach Prime's Playbook with Romi Bean," featuring Deion Sanders, returns to CBS Colorado in August.
