‘Oh You Drive Something Niiiiiiice:' Man Renews His Vehicle Online. The Total Makes Him ‘Physically Sick'

A man reveals his recent price tag to renew his registration, and it made him 'physically sick.' As of this writing, the TikTok has gone viral, generating over 76,000 views. In the post, Patrick Wrompas (@namadiapatrick) showcases how his car registration renewal will cost him $920. 'I'm physically sick,' Wrompas listed out in the video. The car registration renewal website domain reveals that he is renewing his car registration in California. U.S. News ranked California as the most expensive state to own a car. The average annual cost to own a car in California is $6,545. 'And y'all wonder why everyone's tags are expired,' Wrompas captions the video. Comments chimed in expressing the prices they pay for car registration, and noted that Wrompas must drive a nice car. 'Oh you drive something niiiiiiice lol,' one TikTok commenter mentions. 'And I'm over here hurting for $75,' another added. '[Expletive] I was crying over $390,' a third replied. Other commenters speculated what state and car Wrompas drives in. 'Gotta be California,' one commenter correctly assumed. 'I just know this is a Tesla,' a second commenter guessed. Wrompas replied, 'Bingo,' confirming he drives a Tesla. How Is the California Registration Fee Calculated? According to the California DMV , the following determine the registration fee: Your vehicle's purchase price or declared value What city and/or county you live in The unladen or declared gross vehicle weight (GVW) and the number of axles your vehicle may have Unpaid parking violations or toll evasion bail The DMV states that, in addition to the registration fee, if your car is registered for highway use, you will likely also have to pay for the following: California Highway Patrol (CHP) fee Vehicle license fee Transportation improvement fee County/district fee Flat fees will vary by vehicle type, usage, and weight, according to Factory Warranty List . The main fee to consider for the registration renewal price is the Vehicle License Fee (VLF). This fee is 0.65% of the vehicle purchase price or value of the vehicle. Instead of paying this fee in your property taxes, it's paid with the VLF during registration renewal. Additionally, any unpaid parking violations and tolls will be collected during registration renewal. Any drivers avoiding these fees will have to square away the tab to renew. Why Are Teslas So Expensive to Renew in California? The VLF fee, determined by the vehicle value or purchase price, will significantly impact the registration renewal cost. The higher the price tag of the car, the more the VLF will be. According to Tesla , the cheapest Tesla currently available is the Model 3 Long Range RWD with a starting MSRP of $34,990. 'While many of Tesla's prices seem reasonable at first, it's relatively easy to add thousands to the bottom line with the automaker's advanced driver assistance systems, premium colors, wheel upgrades, and more—and that's at the time of purchase,' per InsideEVs . For the higher-end Tesla models, the starting price for the Model S, Model X, and Cybertruck can go up to $100,000. Taking these prices into consideration, this will play a big part in determining the VLF fee for car registration renewal. For example, the Cybertruck Cyberbeast has a starting MSRP of $99,990. This would make the LVF fee estimate cost around $649, not including the other fees California has. Looking at the entry option for Tesla with Model 3 Long Range RWD starting at $34,990, the VLF fee estimate cost is around $228 in California, again, not including the other fees. Tesla drivers in the comments section of Wrompas' video shared the pain of paying a high price tag for driving a Tesla. 'I paid $775 for my Model Y early this year,' one TikTok commenter shared. 'Yep, my Tesla was $800 and I was shook,' another added. Motor1 has contacted Wrompas via TikTok direct message and email. This story will be updated if he replies. Department of Revenue speaks on Missouri temp tag issues

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The State of Missouri is fed up with abuse of temporary car license tags. Lawmakers have approved a new system designed to crack down on abuse. The state's director of revenue wants to get out of the temp tag business entirely. Missouri making changes to temporary tag, vehicle registrations next month Many Missouri drivers aren't renewing their car tags when they expire, including a large number of those using temporary paper tags. That leaves the Missouri Department of Revenue with millions of dollars that go uncollected. 'Temp tags should only be good for 30 days,' said Trish Vincent, who directs the State Department of Revenue. Vincent knows many drivers are keeping their temp tags for much longer. In recent months, FOX4 spotted drivers with temp tags expired by more than a year. Missouri Governor Mike Kehoe has approved a Senate bill, allowing DMVs to issue a 30-day license tag only for trade-in cars still under a loan. New technology the state plans to introduce will require drivers to pay their sales tax at the dealership before they're given a temp tag. Graham Hoffman memorial ride raises $65,000 for scholarship fund 'We are hopefully going to get out of the temp tag business in late 26 or early 27. Taxes will be paid on time, so that helps build roads out there in the state of Missouri,' Vincent said on Wednesday. Also, under the new system, car dealers will be permitted to issue temporary tags that expire after 60 days only under special circumstances. Law enforcement is doing the best it can to enforce these laws, according to Vincent, who adds that in the near future, Missouri license plates will go from using six digits to seven, meaning if a temp tag is seen with only six, patrol officers will know it's no good anymore. Texas Outlaws Temporary Paper Tags, Dealers Must Issue Permanent Metal Plates Upon Purchase

Many states use temporary paper license plates or tags on newly purchased cars in the interim before permanent metal license plates are issued by the Department of Motor Vehicles, but authorities say these paper tags are too easy to counterfeit and are used in crimes. Starting Tuesday, July 1, dealers in the state of Texas will be legally required to put permanent metal plates onto every car they sell and immediately register them in the buyer's name. In order to prepare for the transition, the Texas DMV told Fox 26 Houston that it has been shipping permanent metal license plates to dealers since May, and offering training sessions for months. If a dealer runs out of plates to issue, one of four colors of new temporary metal plates will be issued for different use cases. Business cases like transferring between dealerships get blue plates, out of state buyers get green plates, red plates are issued for one-day or 30-day temporary plates, and purple plates are issued when specific plates, such as specialized plates for disabled drivers, are not available. Read more: These Cars Are Police Magnets The scheme behind temporary paper plates is not a new one; we even explored how dealers can scam the system with illegal fake license plates in 2023, the same year that Texas lawmakers passed the bill outlawing temporary paper plates. The bill in question, House Bill 718, was unanimously passed and endorsed by law enforcement officers from across the state. Texas has over 8 million automobiles registered to drive on its roads, and officials estimate that there were 1.8 million fraudulent paper plates on the roads in the state in 2021. The law states that it will become illegal to have paper tags on vehicles 60 days from July 1, making August 30, 2025 the deadline to get metal plates. If you sell a car privately, the DMV says the seller can remove their plate, or transfer the plate to another vehicle they own, or to the new owner, but that the seller needs to submit a Vehicle Transfer Notification to the DMV within 30 days. Private market buyers are responsible for submitting a title and registration application to their county tax assessor and obtain new plates to register the vehicle within 30 days of purchase. A single mum has shared how she saved more than $800 by making one phone call. The mum-of-three said every bit of extra cash was welcome right now and would go towards costs for her kids. In New South Wales, this includes free car registration and free licences for eligible cardholders. Verade receives the Single Parenting Payment and has had a Pensioner Concession Card since December 2023. The 37-year-old heard about the rule through her hairdresser and rang up Services NSW to check if she was eligible. They told her she could get a refund on her $692 car registration, plus a partial refund of more than $200 for her driver's license due to when she received her Pensioner Concession Card. This totalled a refund of more than $800.'They were so helpful. It was over and all done within 10 minutes. She asked a few questions and had to know my Centrelink number and my last transaction with Service NSW,' Verade said. Services NSW confirmed to Yahoo Finance that those with a current Pensioner Concession Card were eligible for pensioner benefits. That included exemptions from registration fees, motor vehicle tax, conditional registration fees, transfer fees, and stamp duty. Eligible pensioners can also receive free licences, driving tests, riding skills tests, and other licence-related fees. The rules differ depending on your state or territory. In Victoria, Pensioner Concession Card holders are eligible for a 50 per cent discount on their motor vehicle registration fee. In Queensland, Pensioner Concession Card holders are also eligible for concessions to reduce the cost of registering a vehicle. Fees for concession card holders can be found here. You can get a Pensioner Concession Card if you get certain payments from Services Australia. That includes the Age Pension, Carer Payment, Disability Support Pension, JobSeeker or Youth Allowance if you are single, caring for a dependent child and looking for work, and the Parenting Payment single. You don't need to apply for a Pensioner Concession Card, Services Australia will send you one if you are eligible. State and territory governments and local council areas offer benefits to people with a Pensioner Concession Card. For example, you may be able to get lower rates for electricity and gas bills, property and water rates, healthcare costs, public transport fares or motor vehicle registration. She currently works three casual jobs in retail and as a teacher's aide, and has three kids aged 7, 6 and 3. 'That $800 is going to go towards the kids, that's where all the money always goes. So groceries, bills and school clothes is where the funds will go,' she told Yahoo Finance. Verade said she would absolutely encourage other Aussies to check what benefits they were entitled to and it could just take a single phone call to save hundreds. "One of my friends, I contacted as soon as I found out. She's getting $500 back," she said. 'People who are on the pension, whether that be on the single parenting, disability or age pension, there are things out there to help us to make our day-to-day life easier for us."Error while retrieving data Sign in to access your portfolio Error while retrieving data
