Phillies Finally Expected to Cut Ties With Brandon Marsh, Per Insider
Phillies Finally Expected to Cut Ties With Brandon Marsh, Per Insider originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Philadelphia Phillies have some major decisions to make at the trade deadline. After months of the team performing at a somewhat decent level, but not great, there are a few ways they could improve. Advertisement Ultimately, the Phillies need a center fielder, and if Dave Dombrowski doesn't find one now, it's tough to say he ever will. And according to Bob Nightengale of USA Today, that'll be the Phillies' biggest focus at the deadline. He questioned if fans think the Phillies want to find a center fielder, adding that they have a .609 OPS as a group, which would be the worst in the history of the Phillies at the position. 'You think the Phillies would love to find a center fielder at the deadline?' asked Nightengale. 'Their center fielders have a .609 OPS, which would rank the lowest at the position in franchise history.' Philadelphia Phillies outfielder Brandon Marsh (16) hits a single against the Toronto Blue Jays in the fifth inning at Citizens Bank Ross-Imagn Images Brandon Marsh and others who the Phillies put out in center haven't done the job. Advertisement The Phillies have attempted to use multiple players at the position in recent years, but haven't answered the questions many have about them. Marsh is currently hitting .254 with just two home runs. While he's a decent defender, he seems to be the one who'll be the odd man out. It remains uncertain if the Phillies would send him in a deal to another team, as he's a decent professional who could find at-bats elsewhere. Still, it's tough to imagine a scenario where any team wants him too much. Regardless of that situation, the Phillies have a need for a centerfielder, and Dombrowski owes it to this fan base to find one. Phillies Trade Idea Replaces Brandon Marsh With Cedric Mullins
Will the Philadelphia Phillies finally add a centerfielder to replace Brandon Marsh at the deadline? That seems to be the question that the Phillies haven't answered over the past few years, but the hope is for Dave Dombrowski to finally do something significant. Advertisement For Dombrowski and the Phillies, this should be viewed as one of the final years that they have a chance to win a World Series. Yes, the Phillies have much of their core locked up for a very long time, but if things don't eventually fall their way, how much longer can he realistically continue to run this team back? Regarding the players they could add in center field, Cedric Mullins continues to be one who pops up. Sep 29, 2024; Washington, District of Columbia, USA; Philadelphia Phillies manager Rob Thomson (59) walks back to the dugout after a visit to the mound against the Washington Nationals during the sixth inning at Nationals Suanes-Imagn Images Andrew Wright of Newsweek proposed a trade idea that would see the Phillies land him, adding that they should be one of four teams that show interest in him. 'After a scorching hot start to the season, Mullins is in the middle of a 2-for-29 slump. There is still plenty of time to improve that, and he will certainly need to get those numbers up to make himself a trade target. Advertisement 'If it is made known that Mullins is available, the Tigers, Royals, Phillies and Reds should jump on the phone and try to get a deal worked out,' he explained. Despite his recent cold stretch, Mullins has been very good to start the season, posting a 136 OPS+. His career 109 OPS+ is likely more of the player he's shown to be, but if he can get his power numbers back to where they were in 2021, where he hit 30 home runs and 37 doubles, he'd be the perfect addition to this Phillies lineup.
