Phillies Trade Idea Replaces Brandon Marsh With Cedric Mullins

Yahoo10-05-2025

Will the Philadelphia Phillies finally add a centerfielder to replace Brandon Marsh at the deadline?
That seems to be the question that the Phillies haven't answered over the past few years, but the hope is for Dave Dombrowski to finally do something significant.

For Dombrowski and the Phillies, this should be viewed as one of the final years that they have a chance to win a World Series.
Yes, the Phillies have much of their core locked up for a very long time, but if things don't eventually fall their way, how much longer can he realistically continue to run this team back?
Regarding the players they could add in center field, Cedric Mullins continues to be one who pops up.

Andrew Wright of Newsweek proposed a trade idea that would see the Phillies land him, adding that they should be one of four teams that show interest in him.
'After a scorching hot start to the season, Mullins is in the middle of a 2-for-29 slump. There is still plenty of time to improve that, and he will certainly need to get those numbers up to make himself a trade target.

'If it is made known that Mullins is available, the Tigers, Royals, Phillies and Reds should jump on the phone and try to get a deal worked out,' he explained.
Despite his recent cold stretch, Mullins has been very good to start the season, posting a 136 OPS+.
His career 109 OPS+ is likely more of the player he's shown to be, but if he can get his power numbers back to where they were in 2021, where he hit 30 home runs and 37 doubles, he'd be the perfect addition to this Phillies lineup.

Phillies place Aaron Nola on 60-day IL, call up Buddy Kennedy and send Weston Wilson to Triple-A

MIAMI (AP) — The Philadelphia Phillies moved right-hander Aaron Nola to the 60-day injured list on Thursday, a week after he injured his ribcage while trying to work himself back from a sprained right ankle. Nola had been out since early May with the ankle injury. He experienced stiffness in his right side last week in Toronto that wiped out a planned session against live batters, and an MRI showed a stress reaction in his right ribcage. Nola, who is in the second season of a seven-year, $172 million contract, is 105-86 with a 3.78 ERA in 11 seasons with the Phillies, making six straight opening day starts from 2018-23. He was 1-7 with a 6.16 ERA in nine starts this year before injuring his ankle on May 8 during pregame agility drills. The Phillies selected the contract of infielder Buddy Kennedy from Triple-A Lehigh Valley before Thursday's game against the Miami Marlins and optioned infielder/outfielder Weston Wilson to the IronPigs. Kennedy, 26, is batting .283 with eight homers and 40 RBIs in 61 games for Lehigh Valley this season and was the International League Player of the Month for May. In 54 major league games over three seasons with the Diamondbacks, Tigers and Phillies, he has batted .203 with two homers and 19 RBIs. Wilson batted .194 with one home run and 4 RBIs in 22 games for the Phillies this season.

(AP Photo/Albert Pena) ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Jac Caglianone has his first career home run just shy of two weeks after his debut with the Kansas City Royals, and a day after the 22-year-old prospect sat out of a big league game for the first time. Caglianone won a lefty-lefty matchup by pulling a 95.5 mph fastball from Jacob Latz into the Texas Rangers bullpen in right-center field to give the Royals a 3-0 lead in the second inning Thursday. Advertisement Vinnie Pasquantino hit a two-run shot off Texas starter Shawn Armstrong in the first inning of a bullpen game for the Rangers. The sixth overall pick in last year's amateur draft out of Florida, Caglianone went 0 for 5 in his big league debut at St. Louis on June 3. His average was at .196 after going 0 for 4 in the opener of a series at Texas and sitting out the second game. Caglianone, who played his first six games on the road before making his home debut against the New York Yankees, swung at Latz's 2-2 pitch above the strike zone, and pointed toward center field as he rounded second base after his 387-foot drive. The 6-foot-5 Caglianone hit 15 homers in 50 games combined with Double-A Northwest Arkansas and Triple-A Omaha before getting called up. ___ AP MLB:

Cubs star Pete Crow-Armstrong joins 20/20 club with home run against Brewers on Thursday

Pete Crow-Armstrong became the latest addition to the 20/20 Club by hitting his 20th home run of the season on Thursday. He also has 23 stolen bases. Crow-Armstrong opened the Chicago Cubs' afternoon game against the Milwaukee Brewers by entering the elite group. The 23-year-old blasted the ball to right field to tie the score 1-1 in the bottom of the first inning at Wrigley Field. PCA sits fourth on the list of fastest players to reach 20 homers and 20 stolen bases in a single season, having achieved the feat in 73 games. That ties him with Kenneth Williams, who reached 20/20 for the St. Louis Browns in 1922. Advertisement Eric Davis achieved the 20/20 feat in 46 games in 1987, Jose Canseco needed 68 games in 1998, and most recently, Fernando Tatis Jr. did it in 71 games in 2021. In addition to the home runs and steals, Crow-Armstrong has 77 hits and 60 RBI while batting .272. The Cubs are sitting atop the NL Central with a 45-28 record, and PCA is emerging as an early NL MVP candidate.
