But after asking editors for their favorite cheap sandals, I'm convinced it's possible to find an affordable, foot-friendly pair that also meets your summer fashion needs.

'You don't have to dip into fast fashion to find affordable sandals,' Allen said. He recommends Plasticana's jelly sandals, EVA Slides from the sock brand Bombas and clearance pairs from Everlane and Nisolo.

Typically, no. But Allen offered a few tips for finding hard-wearing, affordable sandals, like looking for durable materials, avoiding thin soles and consulting reviews. 'If the outsole looks like it'll disintegrate on cobblestones, it probably will,' he said.

'Many low-cost sandals are made of rigid, cheap plastics that lack flexibility, durability and traction that wear out quickly and lead to discomfort,' Cunha said. Instead of sacrificing comfort for price, he said readers should look for 'materials like memory foam, rubber or EVA, which help absorb shock.'

Fit and arch support are most important, Mendeszoon said, urging readers to try before buying. Straps on sandals should be secure without chafing against your skin, he added, and soles should provide traction so you don't slip.
Cunha echoed many of those suggestions and added that readers should look for cushioned footbeds, wide toe boxes and lightweight, shock-absorbing materials. When in doubt, buy sandals with the American Podiatric Medical Association (APMA) Seal of Acceptance, which Cunha said 'means that they have been specifically designed to support foot health and provide superior comfort.'
