Taif governor orders probe into amusement ride collapse
JEDDAH: An amusement park in the Al-Hada area of Taif has been shut down pending an investigation into the collapse of a ride that left 23 people injured. The '360 Big Pendulum' ride collapsed while in operation on Wednesday evening. In a statement posted on the regional government's X account, Taif Gov. Prince Saud bin Nahar bin Saud bin Abdulaziz ordered the immediate closure of the resort, pending an investigation. 'Several injuries occurred; some were treated at the site, while others were transferred to hospital care,' the statement read. There were no fatalities reported. According to eyewitness accounts and videos circulating on social media, the ride, which swings passengers in a large arc, experienced a structural failure in its central column, which split horizontally while in motion. This caused the passenger-bearing arm of the pendulum to crash into the ground, while riders were strapped to their seats. Footage shared by park visitors shows chaotic scenes moments after the collapse, with several passengers injured from the initial impact and others struck as components from the ride recoiled at high speed, hitting individuals seated on the opposite side. Emergency teams described varying injuries, with three people in critical condition. Authorities responded swiftly, with civil defense, emergency medical services, and security personnel arriving at the scene shortly after the incident was reported. The injured were transported to nearby hospitals for treatment, while some received first aid on-site. The incident has prompted public concern over safety regulations at recreational facilities, with calls for more stringent inspections and accountability. The authorities are expected to release preliminary findings in the coming days.

Gaza civil defense says Israeli strikes kill 30
GAZA CITY: Gaza's civil defense agency said Tuesday that Israeli air strikes killed at least 30 Palestinians, including women and children, in the central Nuseirat district. Civil defense spokesman Mahmud Bassal said the strikes were carried out overnight and into the morning and 'targeted a number of citizens' homes' in the Nuseirat refugee camp. The local Al-Awda hospital said it had received 'the bodies of 30 martyrs, including 14 women and 12 children.' There was no immediate comment from the Israeli military, whose forces have been conducting operations against militant group Hamas in the Gaza Strip for almost 22 months. The Israeli offensive, triggered by a bloody attack by the Palestinian group on October 7, 2023 attack, has killed more than 59,900 Palestinians in Gaza, according to the Hamas-run territory's health ministry. At the weekend, under pressure from international opinion to head off the territory's slide into famine, Israel declared a series of 'tactical pauses' which began on Sunday to allow aid deliveries. According to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's office, the pause in military operations covers 'key populated areas' between 10 am (0700 GMT) and 8 p.m. every day. Designated aid convoy routes will be secure from 6 am to 11 pm, Netanyahu's office said. Overnight, however, strikes continue. COGAT, an Israeli defense ministry body in charge of civil affairs in the Palestinian territories, said that more than 200 truckloads of aid were distributed by the UN and aid agencies on Monday. Another 260 trucks were permitted to cross into Gaza to deposit aid at collection points, four UN tankers brought in fuel and 20 pallets of aid were airdropped from Jordanian and Emirati planes, COGAT said.

Israel orders civilians out of central Gaza ahead of new campaign
GAZA: The Israeli military on Sunday issued an evacuation order for Palestinians in the central Gaza Strip, warning of imminent action against Hamas militants in an area 'where it has not operated before.' The military's Arabic-language spokesman Avichay Adraee said in a post on X that residents and displaced Palestinians sheltering in the Deir el-Balah area should evacuate immediately. Israel was 'expanding its activities' around Deir el-Balah, including 'in an area where it has not operated before,' Adraee said, telling Palestinians to 'move south toward the Al-Mawasi area' on the Mediterranean coast 'for your safety.' Most of Gaza's population of more than two million people have been displaced at least once during the war, which is now in its 22nd month, with repeated Israeli evacuation calls covering large parts of the coastal territory. The UN humanitarian agency OCHA said in January that more than 80 percent of the Gaza Strip was under unrevoked Israeli evacuation orders. Families of hostages held in Gaza since October 7, 2023 said they feared the expansion of the Israeli offensive could harm their loved ones. In a statement released by a campaign group, they called for Israeli authorities to 'urgently explain to Israeli citizens and families what the fighting plan is and how exactly it protects the abductees who are still in Gaza.' On the ground, Gaza's civil defense agency told AFP on Sunday that Israeli strikes overnight killed at least seven people in Gaza City and in parts of the territory's south. Delegations from Israel and militant group Hamas have spent the last two weeks in indirect talks for a 60-day ceasefire in Gaza and the release of 10 living hostages. Of the 251 hostages taken during in 2023, 49 are still being held in Gaza, including 27 the Israeli military says are dead. Families rallied in Israel's economic hub of Tel Aviv on Saturday, calling on Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and US President Donald Trump to secure the return of the captives and end the war. Meanwhile a military statement said Israeli forces had stepped up ground operations in the Jabalia area of northern Gaza, killing 'dozens of terrorists' and dismantling 'hundreds of terrorist infrastructure.' 'Underground terror tunnels' in the area stretching 2.7 kilometers (just over 1.5 miles) some 20 meters underground were located and dismantled, it said. Israeli's military offensive on Gaza has killed at least 58,765 Palestinians, most of them civilians, according to Hamas-run Gaza's health ministry.
