Microsoft is testing new features to make your Android phone work better with Windows PCs

Andy Walker / Android Authority TL;DR Microsoft will soon let you remotely lock your PC and access its clipboard directly from your Android phone. The new clipboard feature allows your phone to access text and images copied on your PC, which is especially useful for Android phones without Phone Link's native cross-device sync. An updated Link to Windows app on the phone will show a history of items copied to the PC's clipboard and also include a new button to remotely lock your computer. There are many tools to control your Android phone from a Windows PC or vice versa, but the most popular is Microsoft's Phone Link. Phone Link displays your phone's notifications, texts, photos, and more on your Windows PC, but with a bit of extra setup, it can do even more. Soon, Phone Link will also let you remotely lock your PC and access its clipboard directly from your Android phone. When you first connect your Android phone to your Windows PC via Phone Link, not every feature is enabled out of the box. For instance, you can use your Android phone as your PC's webcam or access its files directly from Windows File Explorer, but only if you turn these features on first. To turn them on, you have to open the Windows Settings app, navigate to Bluetooth & devices > Mobile devices > Manage devices, and toggle on 'Use as a connected camera' and 'Show mobile device in File Explorer.' Mishaal Rahman / Android Authority In that same menu, you'll find other toggles, such as 'Get new photo notifications' and 'Show device name in Windows Share.' Remotely locking and accessing your PC's clipboard from your Android phone These options are what's available on my PC running the stable version of Windows 11. Users on recent Insider Preview Builds are seeing additional options in this menu, however. For example, Telegram user Lance Adams on the latest Dev channel has a new 'access PC's clipboard' toggle. As its name suggests, this feature lets your connected Android phone access text and images you copy on your PC. This new feature is currently one-way, syncing your PC's clipboard to your phone but not the other way around. Full two-way sync typically requires using SwiftKey's 'sync across devices' feature or Phone Link's 'cross-device copy and paste' option. That latter option, however, is only available on phones that come with Phone Link preinstalled, which excludes Google's Pixel phones. This makes the new PC-to-phone sync especially handy for Pixel users, who have lacked the native clipboard integration found on many Samsung, OnePlus, HONOR, and Xiaomi devices. What's more, the experience is improving on the phone side. Telegram user Legofan, who is on the latest Canary build, reports that an updated Link to Windows app now shows a history of items copied to the PC's clipboard, not just the most recent one. Legofan Legofan also tells me they see a new 'lock PC' button in the app, which lets you remotely lock your Windows PC from your phone. This option is only available if you enable the corresponding 'Remote PC controls' toggle in Windows' mobile devices menu, as shown below. Legofan As a long-time Windows and Android user, it's great to see Microsoft continue to build tighter integrations between the two platforms. Google has less incentive to make its OS work better with Windows, as the company is focused on its own competing Chrome OS ecosystem. Given the news that Google is working to merge Android and Chrome OS into a single platform, that focus is unlikely to change. What do you think of these new Phone Link features? Quip is a smart clipboard management app for iOS and Mac

Developers of Unite, an app that offers customized web app management on Mac, on Monday released a new app called Quip, a clipboard app for the Apple ecosystem. The app includes features for organizing text clips, support for shortcuts to trigger text snippets, duplicate prevention, and code formatting, among other things. Its goal is to offer users more control and customization compared with the traditional clipboard, making it a more productive alternative. Quip is non-intrusive — on Mac, it lives on the menu bar and, on iOS, it has a special keyboard — and maintains a history of all things that you copy across devices as a universal clipboard. You can easily search through the history and also customize the timeframe to keep items stored, along with max items and maximum item size. You can filter through these items by text, links, images, code, files, and recency. Quip allows you to add clipboard items to collections to easily access them later. Plus, you can make smart collections to automatically add certain clipboard items to those collections. As the app accesses all kinds of data, the company has built customizable privacy controls. By default, the app ignores data such as passwords, credit cards, and personally identifiable data for its clip history. It will also ignore temporary data, including cache, auto-generated data, and debug information. You can customize this further and instruct the app to ignore certain apps and keywords for the clipboard. One of the useful features of the app is the 'supershortcut,' which allows you to define short phrases for text expansion. For instance, you can write your address in a 'supershortcut' and use the trigger keyword 'addr' to paste details anywhere. This works for links and code, too. Quip also allows you to capture content on the screen from a presentation, videos, and a PDF through a trigger shortcut. What's more, the app has some smart features, including cleaning up URLs, preventing duplicate entries in history, cleaning up white spaces, and automatically formatting code. The app supports Apple's continuity Camera feature, allowing you to post sketches, documents, or photos from iPhone to Mac using the menubar app. The app's developer, Binyamin Goldman, said the company is using older Apple NLP (Natural Language Processing) capabilities for on-device intelligent features on the app. He said that, later this year, it will switch to Apple's offline AI models to explore more capabilities. Goldman previously only did partial development work on the apps his company created, he told TechCrunch over email. However, he has done the majority of work on Quip thanks to AI tools like Cursor and Claude, he says. You can try Quip for free for two weeks and pay $14.99 per year to get access to apps across iOS, iPadOS, and macOS. You can also buy a standalone license for the Mac app for $19.99. Police intervene as Trump congressman accused of clipboard assault

A North Carolina Republican is back in the spotlight for yet another abrasive incident with a voter, but this time the lawmaker allegedly took matters into his own hands. Rep. Chuck Edwards, R-N.C., reportedly smacked an attendee at a non-partisan event Saturday evening with a clipboard after going on a pro-Trump tirade, according to a witness account. It's the second time in months he's stirred controversy at an event with constituents. But Guy Gooder, a member of the Rotary club and organizer of the event, told The Charlotte Observer that Edwards went off script and used parts of his speech to defend Trump's tariffs and DOGE agenda. 'He spent 30 minutes basically insulting the rotarians' intelligence in his speech.' After leaving the stage and winding through the crowd, Edwards got in a heated discussion with an attendee before later smacking them with a clipboard, Gooder alleges. The man said he heard the strike but did not see it as Edwards' body was blocking his view. Edwards, meanwhile, alleges that he was the victim of a belligerent rant from a drunken man. 'The rotarian basically said that was a load of BS,' Gooder said of the clash. 'Chuck [Edwards] stops and kind of bends over, kind of in-his-face type of stuff,' he added. Then, while the supposed heckler was still seated, Edwards 'hit the guy with his clipboard,' Gooder claimed. The congressman's office released a statement on Sunday stating Edwards 'refused to engage with an intoxicated man that was cursing.' 'He became more belligerent and later called the police,' the statement continued. 'His behavior was embarrassing to the people at the event and was duly noted by the police. To my knowledge there was no further action taken by police.' The outburst is the second headline-grabbing incident the North Carolina lawmaker has had in recent months. In March, Edwards drew negative press for hosting a town hall that later descended into chaos as voters screamed and swore at the Republican. The room steadily grew louder and the residents more unruly. Edwards struggled to keep control over the hundreds as he stood at the front of the room, stammering at times, listening to the cacophony of complaints. 'Bootlicker!' one attendee yelled at the March town hall. Another in the audience yelled out: 'What do you plan to do to make sure North Carolina does not get taken over by dictatorship and fascism?' Edwards had enough, admitting at one point: 'And you wonder why folks don't want to do these town halls.' 'I feel like this is not productive with everybody yelling at me,' he admitted.
