Garda Commissioner role: Long-serving senior members not in running due to pension tax concerns

The deadline for applications to become the next commissioner of An Garda Síochána has passed and the longest-serving senior members of the force are understood not to have applied for the job. None of the serving assistant commissioners who have spent their entire policing careers in the Garda have applied, sources said, with this in large part due to what they see as an onerous tax exposure on their pensions should they succeed Drew Harris and serve the full five-year term. The Irish Times understands Deputy Commissioner Justin Kelly has applied for the position, while sources said Deputy Commissioner Shawna Coxon has also done so. Ms Coxon declined to comment on the matter when asked by journalists at an event in Dublin last week. She was appointed deputy commissioner in April 2021, having previously been deputy chief officer in the Toronto Police in Canada. READ MORE Deputy Garda Commissioner Justin Kelly. Photograph: Colin Keegan/Collins The recruitment process is confidential, meaning a list of the candidates who applied will not be disclosed. The advertisement for the job stated that applications were welcome from candidates with 'policing, security or civilian backgrounds' . But Minister for Justice Jim O'Callaghan recently said he would be unwilling to recommend to Government any candidate for the commissioner job who does not have previous policing experience. The deadline for applying for the position passed last Thursday and Mr O'Callaghan said he expected a candidate would be selected by mid-July. He said his intention was that the new commissioner would be in place to take over from Mr Harris when he retires on September 1st. The recruitment process is being run by Public Jobs, formerly the Public Appointments Service. When a successful candidate emerges from that process, they must be recommended by Mr O'Callaghan to the Cabinet for final approval. [ Outgoing Garda Commissioner's legacy one of 'mistrust and fear', says GRA head Opens in new window ] In reply to queries, the Department of Justice said the advertisement for the job stated a 'track record of leadership and success in a policing role is desirable'. It added that any candidate not currently serving in the Garda – including those from other jurisdictions – would be 'required to attest as a member' before taking up the role of commissioner. They would also be required to 'make a solemn declaration to uphold the Constitution and the laws of the State' in order to 'provide strong reassurance of commitment to our nation'. Mr Harris was appointed commissioner in October 2018 for a five-year term, which was extended by a further two years. More recently, he was offered a second extension, of three months, to facilitate the completion of the recruitment process to find his successor. That competition was delayed because the Garda oversight agencies with a role in preparing the process – the Garda board and the Policing and Community Safety Authority – did not commence operations until April 1st following a reconfiguration of Garda oversight bodies.

LPGA names former PGA of America exec as new commissioner

NEW YORK, May 22 (Reuters) - The LPGA board elected Craig Kessler to serve as its new commissioner, the organisation said on Thursday, with the former Chief Operating Officer of the PGA of America stepping into the role on July 15. Former Commissioner Mollie Marcoux Samaan stepped down in January, days before the start of the 2025 season, after overseeing an increase in popularity and prize money. "This role is deeply personal to me – not just as a professional opportunity, but as a chance to make a difference in the world and create new opportunities for others. Golf changes lives," Kessler said in a statement. "I believe in the LPGA's mission, its members and its momentum." The LPGA Tour put a record $131 million in prize money up for offer across 35 events in its 75th anniversary season this year, with the combined purse for the five majors topping $47 million.

Craig Kessler selected next LPGA commissioner and sees explosive potential

The LPGA has selected Craig Kessler as its next commissioner, turning to the PGA of America's chief operating officer to help the 75-year-old league better capitalize on the growth in women's sports. Kessler, 39, is the 10th commissioner in LPGA history, replacing Mollie Marcoux Samaan, who stepped away after three-and-a-half years in January. He formally takes over on July 15.

LPGA names Craig Kessler as new commissioner

After a six-month-long search, Craig Kessler has been appointed as the newest commissioner of the LPGA, the tour announced Thursday. Kessler, 39, replaces interim commissioner Liz Moore, who stepped in when Mollie Marcoux Samaan resigned in December. Appointed by an LPGA search committee and approved by players and sponsors alike, Kessler is the league's 10th commissioner. Advertisement 'This isn't just about leading a sports organization — it's about redefining what's possible,' Kessler said in a statement. 'This role is deeply personal to me — not just as a professional opportunity, but as a chance to make a difference in the world and create new opportunities for others.' Kessler most recently served as the chief operating officer of the PGA of America, which runs the PGA Championships and the Ryder Cup. Before focusing on golf, Kessler got his start in consulting at McKinsey & Company and Kohlberg Kravis Roberts & Co. He also served as the chief operating officer at Topgolf from 2016 to 2021. 'We set out to find a transformational leader with a deep appreciation for the LPGA's legacy and a clear vision of what's possible for our future,' John B. Veihmeyer, chair of the LPGA board of directors, said in a statement. Kessler's appointment comes at an inflection point for the LPGA. Nelly Korda made tour history last year with a run of five consecutive wins, and since the pandemic, more women are taking an interest in recreational golf than ever. Despite record-breaking LPGA purse sizes, the league has battled the departure of key sponsors and limited TV windows, which are governed by the PGA Tour's contracts with networks. Players have been given spots in events for which they are not eligible, and a tournament, the FIR Hills Seri Pak Championship, was cancelled earlier this season due to a payment dispute with the event's underwriter. Since former commissioner Mike Whan left the LPGA in 2021, the general sentiment among players is that there is a lack of communication from tour leadership. Kessler has not addressed LPGA membership in person, but recorded a video shared with players Thursday morning. He will be in attendance at the KPMG Women's PGA Championship in Frisco, Texas, from June 19-22.

Just one issue on Aug. 5 ballot in Monroe County

MONROE COUNTY — Only one issue will be on the ballot for the Aug. 5 election in Monroe County. Annamarie Osment, Monroe County clerk and register of deeds, said a primary election will be held Aug. 5 for the Monroe County Board of Commissioners' District 2 county commissioner seat. District 2 covers Milan, London, Exeter and Raisinville townships and the villages of Milan and Maybee. Republicans Dale Biniecki and Dwayne Dobbs and Democrat Danielle Hoover are running for the seat. The Republican who wins the primary race in August will run against Hoover in the November election. The District 2 county commissioner seat has been vacant since February, when the Monroe County Board of Commissioners, by a vote of 5 to 3, removed Mark Brant from office. After his September federal conviction for maintaining a drug-involved premise, Brant, a Republican, resigned from the position in October. But, he went on to win re-election to his post in the Nov. 5 general election, beating Dobbs and Hoover, who ran as write-in candidates. Although Brant is currently serving 18 months in federal prison in Morgantown, West Virginia, he took office on Jan. 1 and planned to serve out his term until his removal by the board. The board and its lawyers used a legal opinion based on Michigan election law, which requires elected officers to be registered voters. Biniecki of Maybee ran unsuccessfully in November for state representative for the 31st District. A married father of three and grandfather of four, Biniecki was a truck owner-operator for 47 year, until retiring. He's been an active member of the Monroe County Republican Party for more than 10 years, according to his website. Dwayne Dobbs lives in Raisinville Township. For 30 years, he worked for the Monroe County Sheriff's Office, retiring as a correctional officer.
