Bitcoin Nears Record as Treasury Investors Boost Crypto Market
(Bloomberg) -- Bitcoin rose to within striking distance of an all-time high as demand from institutional investors and corporate treasury buyers lifts the wider market for digital assets. Sunseeking Germans Face Swiss Backlash Over Alpine Holiday Congestion New York Warns of $34 Billion Budget Hole, Biggest Since 2009 Crisis Three Deaths Reported as NYC Legionnaires' Outbreak Spreads A New Stage for the Theater That Gave America Shakespeare in the Park Chicago Schools' Bond Penalty Widens as $734 Million Gap Looms The original cryptocurrency advanced as much as 3.3% to top $122,000, not far shy of a previous record set in mid-July. A weekend rally saw Ether surge to above $4,300, its highest level since December 2021. The gains come on the back of mounting interest in cryptocurrencies among large investors. So-called digital-asset treasury companies — listed vehicles that pivot into accumulating cryptocurrencies — have to date amassed a Bitcoin stockpile worth $113 billion, according to data compiled by Coingecko. Equivalent vehicles for Ether have stockpiled some $13 billion of the token so far, according to data. 'Bitcoin's climb toward record highs is being supported by steady institutional inflows into corporate treasuries, US spot ETFs and a shift in sentiment following new US tariffs on imported gold bars,' said Rachael Lucas, a crypto analyst at BTC Markets. 'With gold facing supply bottlenecks and policy risk, Bitcoin's role as a borderless, tariff-free store of value is gaining traction among investors.' Bitcoin traded around $121,200 as of 6:15 a.m. in New York, while Ether was at $4,250. Eric Trump, son of US President Donald Trump, who has financial interests in several digital-asset entities, applauded the Ether rally in a post on X. Bloomberg News reported Friday that investors are being sounded out on a plan for World Liberty Financial, the Trump family-backed venture, to set up a public company that would hold its WLFI tokens. Ether options markets reflected the bullish sentiment with an overall put-call ratio 0.40. The highest concentration of call options with a December 26 expiry is at $6,000, according to Deribit data. Bitcoin and Ether positioning has been heavily skewed toward September and December calls in line with macro rate-cut timing and continued adoption by the traditional financial system, said Sean McNulty, derivatives trading lead of APAC at digital-asset prime brokerage FalconX Ltd. For Bitcoin, the next major milestone is the previous all-time high of $123,205, while support for the token can be found near $116,000 if the current momentum fades, Lucas added. (Updates pricing.) Traditional companies enter the crypto treasury game with BTC, XRP and SOL buys
A growing number of traditional companies are beginning to experiment with digital assets as part of their corporate treasury strategies, signaling a shift in how businesses view crypto's role in financial management. This week alone, companies from sectors as diverse as agriculture, consumer manufacturing and even a nearly 80-year-old Japanese textile company announced allocations to tokens like Bitcoin, XRP, and Solana. On Wednesday, Nature's Miracle, an agricultural technology company, announced it would allocate up to $20 million for an XRP corporate treasury, making it one of the latest companies to move to an altcoin treasury strategy. Consumer manufacturing company Upexi disclosed the acquisition of 83,000 SOL, valued at $16.7 million, for its corporate treasury, also on Wednesday. A day before, Kitabo, a publicly listed Japanese company primarily involved in textiles and recycling, revealed plans to buy 800 million Japanese yen, or about $5.6 million, of Bitcoin for its company reserve. The rise of Bitcoin treasury companies has led to the expansion of corporate treasury options, with many businesses now considering digital assets for treasury strategies. As the trend grows, analysts warn of the mounting market and investment risks of crypto treasury companies. Risks associated with the growing trend of crypto treasury companies Crypto holding firms, including Bitcoin treasury companies, carry several legal and market risks that analysts warn could implode these companies and potentially cause wider fallout in the crypto markets. Only a few Bitcoin treasury companies will survive, according to a June report from venture capital company Breed. The authors of the report argued that even minimal drops in Bitcoin's price could trigger a death spiral of overleveraged BTC firms, who would be forced to sell their BTC to cover debt obligations, potentially leading to a vicious cycle of lower prices and dried-up corporate credit. Digital asset holding companies could also face costly investor lawsuits if crypto markets do not perform or if traditional financial metrics like share prices sink. These risks are compounded by altcoin holding companies, which hold inflationary assets that can experience 90% drawdowns between market cycles and often peak during a single market cycle. 'Altcoins have no floor and thus are cooked once 'the music stops,' whereas the BTC treasury companies have a floor, and this floor is independent of them, and it tends to go up with time,' content creator and community member Viktor wrote on X. A Small Food Firm Buys 21 bitcoin, Jumping on BTC Treasury Trend, Shares Fall Anyways
DDC Enterprise (DDC), an Asian food company, has announced the acquisition of 21 BTC as part of a long-term plan to incorporate the cryptocurrency into its corporate treasury. The company, led by founder and CEO Norma Chu, exchanged 254,333 class A ordinary shares for BTC, in a transaction valued at roughly $2.28 million, according to a press release. The move positions DDC among a growing cohort of public companies using BTC as a treasury asset. Two more purchases totaling 79 BTC are expected in the coming days, bringing the company's initial holdings to 100 BTC. In a shareholder letter issued last week, Chu outlined plans to accumulate up to 500 BTC within six months and aim for 5,000 BTC in three years. While companies adopting bitcoin as a strategic treasury asset often see major price rises, DDC saw the opposite. The company's shares dropped more than 12% on Friday's trading session, while the S&P 500 dropped 0.6% and the tech-heavy Nasdaq fell 1%. DigiAsia (FAAS), for example, saw its share prices surge more than 90% in a single trading session after announcing a $100 million BTC treasury plan earlier this month.
