Councilwoman turns out to be brazen shoplifter

A councilwoman was busted for shoplifting twice in less than 24 hours. Carla Dressler, a lawmaker in Brazil, was caught on camera stealing clothes from two stores in Pontes e Lacerda. According to Mato Gross Civil Police, she first snatched gym attire from a display table in a fitness store before pilfering a dress priced at $108 and a skirt valued at $44 from a separate retail outlet. At the fitness store, Dressler folded the outfit and placed it inside her purse. She then turned away and stepped over to a rack as her daughter approached her from behind and tried to get her attention. Store employees were concerned about Dressler's behavior and alerted the police at about 4pm. The items were valued at around $108. She was located at an address nearby wearing the green training outfit and was taken to a station where she confessed to the crime and then was released after paying bail. A second store owner then contacted the police to report that Dressler had also stolen from their location. The shocking footage showed a female sales associate assisting Dressler and showing her some of the clothing items. The councilwoman first grabbed a dress priced at $108 and a skirt valued at $44. In a span of a second, she was able to somehow stuff both items into her bag without the worker noticing. Mato Grosso authorities are now investigating if other businesses have been targeted by Dressler. Dressler was elected as councilwoman in the Mato Grosso municipality of Vale de Sao Domingo in 2024 after tallying 84 votes in a city with a population of about 3,000 residents. Sneak thief: The councilwoman was filmed holding a dress while a saleswoman was assisting her just seconds before she stuffed the dress and a skirt into her bag and fled According to the Superior Electoral Court's Disclosure of Candidates and Electoral Accounts, the councilwoman graduated from high school. It's unknown if she attended a university. Leading up to the elections, Dressler, who has been married for 17 years and has two daughters, declared that she had around $900 worth of assets. However, the first-time politician earns a monthly salary of about $810.

Lexington councilwoman Denise Gray won't seek reelection, cites harassment

Lexington councilwoman Denise Gray will not seek reelection, she announced Sunday afternoon. Gray said after much prayer and reflection, she decided to not seek a second term as the sixth-district councilperson for the Lexington Fayette County Urban Government. 'Serving you, my neighbors, my hometown community, and the district where I was raised has been an honor that words can hardly capture,' Gray stated in a press release. 'Together we've asked hard questions, challenged the status quo, and worked toward a more just and equitable Lexington. I am proud of what we've built.' Gray said her decision to not run again for a Lexington council seat was a result of treatment by media following her sexual assault allegations against former council member Brenda Monarrez. Monarrez was accused of sexual assault against Gray in August 2024. On Aug. 8, 2024, Gray applied for a restraining order, called an interpersonal protection order, alleging Monarrez was sexually aggressive toward her on two occasions over the prior three years. In October, District Judge Traci Brislin granted a three-year restraining order between the two women and found sexual assault did occur. 'I believe an actual sexual assault occurred, and it may occur again,' Brislin said. 'The court believes that this has happened on not one, but two separate occasions.' Sexual assault under state statue also includes sexual abuse. No criminal charges have been filed against Monarrez. Gray said her decision to not seek reelection wasn't easy. 'The lack of empathy and disregard for my humanity during that time was not only hurtful, but it was also a painful reminder of the barriers Black women too often face when we speak truth and stand in our power,' Gray said. 'Despite that treatment, I continued to show up and serve with courage, compassion, and commitment. But I will not pretend it did not affect me, it did.' Gray was elected in November 2022 to represent Lexington's sixth district, which stretches along Lexington's north and east sides with Paris Pike, Winchester, Liberty, Man O'War and Bryan Station roads as major corridors. As a result of the sexual assault claims, Monarrez was banned from entering city hall and Democratic party events. Monarrez, who represented district four, lost her seat to Emma Curtis in November 2024. Staff reporter Beth Musgrave contributed to this story.
