Cubs put lefty Shota Imanaga on injured list after he got hurt going to cover first base
CHICAGO (AP) — The Chicago Cubs placed left-handed starter Shota Imanaga on the 15-day injured list Monday with a left hamstring strain, a day after he got hurt when going to cover first base. Chicago made the move before the opener of its series against San Francisco. Right-hander Gavin Hollowell was recalled from Triple-A Iowa. Imanaga got hurt during Sunday's 4-0 loss at Milwaukee after going to cover first base on a potential double play in the sixth inning of what was then a scoreless game. The Japanese pitcher had exited his previous start with cramping in each of his legs. He joined two other Cubs starters on the injured list. Lefty Justin Steele is out for the season with an elbow injury and right-hander Javier Assad has an oblique issue. The Brewers had runners on first and second with one out Sunday when Christian Yelich hit a grounder toward first baseman Michael Busch. Imanaga left the mound to try to complete a 1-6-3 double play, but he was in clear discomfort as he headed toward first base. As Yelich beat the throw to first, Imanaga grabbed the back of his left leg. After Cubs officials checked on Imanaga and removed him from the game, the pitcher walked with a clear limp as he headed to the dugout. Imanaga pitched five innings in Tuesday's 9-0 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates before departing because of leg cramps. He was charged with two runs and four hits in 5 2/3 innings against the Brewers. The 31-year-old is 18-5 with a 2.89 ERA since signing a four-year, $53 million contract with the Cubs in January 2024. He finished fourth in the NL Rookie of the Year voting last season. ___ AP MLB: The Associated Press

Warm spell could surpass April heat record
It has been the warmest day of the year so far in Northern Ireland with temperatures reaching 23.4C at Derrylin on Wednesday afternoon. The County Fermanagh village had logged the previous warmest day on Tuesday when temperatures reached 22.2C. Many across Northern Ireland are taking advantage of the sunshine and blue skies by heading to well known walking and beauty spots. Wednesday could also see the record broken for the hottest April day recorded. The current record stands at 24.5C, recorded at Boom Hall in Londonderry on 26 April 1984. Meanwhile, the RNLI is reminding anyone entering the water to take extra care and avoid unnecessary risks as early season conditions are more challenging. Derek Rea from the lifeboat station in Larne said: "Although the outside temperature is really nice and warm, the sea temperature at the minute is still below 10 degrees, so if you are going into the water be very cautious about the period of time that you're in it. "Go into the sea, come out and run up and down the beach, enjoy yourselves and go back in again." Derek said despite the nice weather, low sea temperatures could cause cold water shock. "If you get into trouble and feel yourself cramping up or anything, what we recommend is you go into the float-to-live approach. "Put your arms out, tilt your head back to open your airway, have the water covering your ears, and your body will naturally come up to the surface." Meanwhile, temperatures towards the west coast in the Republic of Ireland have climbed to 25.2C at Newport in County Mayo. According to Irish weather service, Met Éireann, this is only the second time in Irish climate records, that temperatures have risen above 25C in the month of April. That is just shy of the April record for the Republic which is 25.8C at Glenties in County Donegal on 26 April 1984. Responding to a question by Alliance assembly member John Blair on Wednesday, Northern Ireland Health Minister Mike Nesbitt said that "rising temperatures caused by climate change has been recognised as a public health concern". He cited the World Health Organisation (WHO) which states "climate change presents a threat to public health and is impacting health in a myriad of ways, including by leading to death and illness from increasingly frequent extreme weather events, such as heatwaves, storms and floods, the disruption of food systems, increases in zoonoses and food-, water- and vector-borne diseases, and mental health issues". No, we're not having a heatwave. Here's why Where it will be warmest next week as UK to bask in mini heatwave
