Canadians among 7 arrested in Australian drug-trafficking probe

Investigators arrested four men, including the Canadians and the alleged ringleader, on May 30, police said. (Handout) Authorities in Australia say two Canadians are among seven men facing charges following a months-long investigation into an international organized crime ring believed to have been using 'trusted insiders' to help smuggle cocaine, methamphetamine and tobacco into the country. The Canadian nationals, aged 24 and 31, were not identified by the Australian Federal Police. Both men have been charged with participating in a criminal group and attempting to possess commercial quantities of border-controlled drugs, according to the agency. A 42-year-old Australian man, the alleged ringleader of the group, came under investigation in September 2023, after investigators say he and his associations were 'purporting to have the ability to circumvent border controls' to import large quantities of contraband using a freight transportation company. Ten months later, in July 2024, Australian police found more than 280 kilograms of liquid methamphetamine inside an industrial cooler that had been imported from Vancouver, allegedly organized by the ringleader. Two other men, aged 43 and 31, were seen accessing the cooler and 'preparing to extract the liquid methamphetamine' in the Sydney suburb of Riverstone, police said. Both men were arrested and charged after police conducted separate search warrants on Aug. 5, 2024, according to the statement. Authorities say the ringleader continued to use the freight company to import three separate shipments containing more than 20 million cigarettes from the United Arab Emirates. Then last month, police allege the man was planning to import a shipping container from Panama containing 50 kilograms of cocaine concealed in cement bags. Australian police say Canadians arrested after cooler full of meth shipped from Vancouver The Canadian nationals, aged 24 and 31, were not identified by the Australian Federal Police. Both men have been charged with participating in a criminal group and attempting to possess commercial quantities of border-controlled drugs. (Handout) Investigators say he sought the assistance of his alleged Canadian accomplices, who flew in from Canada to retrieve the cocaine from the cement bags and move it on to organized crime groups in the eastern Australian state of New South Wales. Investigators moved in and arrested four men, including the Canadians and the alleged ringleader, on May 30, police said. The alleged ringleader was charged with multiple counts related to organized crime and importing drugs and tobacco. The fourth man, 42 years old, was charged with attempting to import commercial quantities of border-controlled drugs and participating in a criminal group. The Canadians were denied bail and are scheduled to appear next in an Australian court on June 13. Police say one other suspect, a 36-year-old man, was arrested at the Sydney airport on May 31 and was charged with importing large quantities of tobacco and participating in a criminal group.

Police: Tumpat goldsmith's abduction linked to years-long extortion

KOTA BARU, May 27 — Police believe that four suspects involved in the recent kidnapping and extortion case against a goldsmith shop owner in Palekbang, Tumpat, are members of a criminal group active in the state. Kelantan police chief Datuk Mohd Yusoff Mamat said the group is believed to be active in criminal activities in the state for a long time and had targeted several individuals for extortion. 'They are a group of criminals involved in extortion, including against the victim in this case, in addition to asking for protection money from the victim. 'This group is also believed to be involved in other criminal activities including drug trafficking and has links with criminal partners in neighbouring countries,' he told reporters today. According to him, the group may be facing difficulties in paying for drug supplies obtained from neighbouring countries following the strict action by the police after the cross-border ban since December last year. Meanwhile, Mohd Yusoff reminded the public not to easily believe unverified reports regarding the case, including the assumption that the victim owed the suspect. 'Do not make unfounded assumptions. Let the police investigate and resolve this case as soon as possible,' he said. He said the criminal group involved is believed to have been extorting money from the victim for a long time, and most recently asked the victim to hand over 80 kilogrammes of gold, estimated to be worth approximately RM40 million. On May 20, a video clip went viral showing the victim's vehicle being stopped before he was forced into a grey Suzuki Swift. — Bernama

Mexican security forces kill 12, arrest 9 in raid on alleged gang site

MEXICO CITY, May 17 (Reuters) - Mexican security forces detained nine alleged members of a criminal group and killed 12 others in an operation in a rural part of southwestern Mexico on Saturday, Mexico's Security Ministry said. In a post on social media, Security Minister Omar Harfuch confirmed three members of the Navy were injured in the Navy-led operation in Huitzontla, Michoacan. The detained individuals are linked to crimes such as homicide, extortion, and kidnapping, Harfuch said. Criminal groups in the area are tied to maritime drug trafficking and naval personnel found weapons and tactical equipment at the site, the Security Ministry said in a statement. Security forces came up against "strong aggression" which "necessitated the use of force in compliance with current regulations," the ministry said. Mexican newspapers El Universal and La Jornada reported that the group was part of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel gang, one of Mexico's two major drug cartels. The U.S. government designated the cartel a terrorist organization in February.

Two robbery suspects with over 80 criminal records shot dead by police in Nilai

NILAI, May 16 – Police shot dead two men believed to be actively involved in robbery and drug trafficking cases in a parking area inside a condominium building here at 10 pm yesterday. Bukit Aman Criminal Investigation Department (CID) Deputy Director (Intelligence/Operations) Datuk Fadil Marsus said the suspects, in their 40s and 20s, were involved in house, factory, and courier hub robbery cases across several states, including Selangor, Negeri Sembilan, and Perak. 'The 40-year-old suspect had 76 criminal records related to narcotics and violence, while the other suspect had 11 similar criminal records,' he told reporters at the condominium's parking area just after midnight. Negeri Sembilan Police chief Datuk Ahmad Dzaffir Mohd Yussof was also present. Fadil said during the incident, the suspects attempted to flee in a silver-coloured car before being intercepted by police, resulting in a shootout where the police vehicle was struck by gunfire from the suspects. He said no officers were injured, and authorities believe the group may also be linked to violent crimes in other states. Fadil added that police found two firearms — a semi-automatic pistol and a revolver — at the scene. He also believed the criminal group was involved in a robbery at a courier centre in Klang about two months ago. Based on records, the group was linked to secret society activities. According to him, police are actively hunting down the remaining members of the group through a series of raids at several residential units around Selangor. 'The raids involved arrests and drug seizures, with further details to be provided later,' he said. Fadil noted the suspects were believed to have been moving frequently, renting units at the condominium here as temporary hideouts. 'There are many other locations... the suspects were believed to have rented a Toyota vehicle, and the registration plate was only used today. We believe the car's registration plate was replaced every two days,' he said. — Bernama
