New Geylang curry rice stall ups the ante with bigger variety & affordable prices, opens till 3.30am
Earlier this year, a shot was heard around Singapore's curry rice world when the iconic New Scissor-cut Curry Rice in Geylang shut its doors in May 2025 after a 30-year run. Well, rejoice, fellow foodies: a fresh face has taken over its space. It's called Sin Hock Heng Scissors Cut Curry Rice, and it's been making waves for its variety, affordable prices and late-night opening hours.
Not to be confused with an identically named Teochew porridge establishment (which also happens to reside in Geylang), Sin Hock Heng Curry Rice appears to have had a rather quiet opening in early-Jul 2025.
On the bright side, a recent Facebook feature by Ah Beng Foodie has gained traction. In his 6 Aug post, the creator waxes lyrical about the new stall's generous portions, wallet-friendliness and the quality of its expanded menu — even comparing its taste to 'the former's prime or even better'. Public response, however, has been more of a mixed bag, with a handful of commenters expressing a preference for the defunct stall's rendition.
Still, a consistent thread of praise across the stall's reviews so far is its cleanliness, which several have cited as an upgrade from the previous stall's 'poor hygiene'.
Mixed reviews aside, there's plenty about Sin Hock Heng Scissors Cut Curry Rice that's worth checking out for yourself. Take the menu, for starters.
You'll find a straightforward selection of curry rice sets, including the fuss-free Pork Chop Set, Pork Belly Set and Curry Chicken Set. Priced at S$4.80 each, these classic combos include usual suspects: 'melt-in-the-mouth' braised cabbage, a gooey sunny-side-up for that creamy edge, your choice of protein and, of course, a healthy ladleful of their aromatic, coconut milk-laced curry blanketed over the rice and ingredients.
Prefer something a little more DIY? Go for the adorably named Do Re Mi (S$6) and Flush (S$8.80), which come with 2 meats, 1 vegetable, and 3 meats, 1 egg, 2 vegetables respectively. Go ham over their spread of nearly 20 dishes, including selections like crispy Chicken Cutlet, juicy Meatballs and Fried Prawn Fritters that pack a perfect ratio of prawns and crunchy batter.
And did I mention they're open until 3.30am daily? All the more reason for supper-seekers, night owls (or anyone, really) to flock on over for a hearty curry rice fix.
