NRLW: Two sent off as Warriors Women crash to upset defeat
Warriors second-rower Matekino Gray leaves the field after getting a red card for a dangerous tackle. Photo: © Bruce Lim / Two red cards by the Warriors have handed the Canberra Raiders a 20-16 victory in Hamilton, their first of the season. Matekino Gray and Tysha Ikenasio were ordered from the field within minutes of each other in the first half in an unprecedented scene, with Gray committing a spear tackle on Raiders prop Chloe Saunders. Ikenasio then followed her for an early shower after a dangerous hip drop tackle on Monalisa Soliola. However, an impressive fightback saw them in contention, before some good game management by the Raiders saw the visitors close out the result. By the time Gray and Ikenasio were sent off, the Raiders were already well in charge with a 12-0 lead, thanks to tries to Jordyn Preston and Sereana Naitokatoka. MacKenzie Wiki then extended the lead with a try shortly after and it looked like the now-11 player Warriors were in for a long night at the rain-soaked FMG Stadium Waikato. To their credit, the Warriors mounted a spirited comeback. Payton Takimoana and Lavinia Tauhalaliku hit back either side of halftime to close the gap, but the very stretched defence couldn't stop Raiders fullback Elise Simpson from scoring a crucial try to make it 20-8. Takimoana then completed a hat trick as the Warriors finished the much stronger team on attack, but some wayward goal kicking meant they didn't quite have enough to draw level. Raiders skipper Zahara Temara's experience saw them control the final stages well to earn their first win of the season. The result sees the Warriors remain in sixth place on the ladder, they return to Hamilton next weekend to play the fourth-placed Sharks. Read how the game unfolded here:

‘You hate to see it in the game': Broncos rally around Reegan Hicks as NRLW rookie faces lengthy ban for lifting tackle
Broncos rookie Reegan Hicks is facing two weeks on the sidelines after she was whacked with a grade 2 dangerous throw charge from the match review committee for a lifting tackle that warranted a send-off on Sunday evening. The Queensland under-19 State of Origin prop forward made her debut in Sunday's thumping win over the Titans but will have to wait a while to play her next game due to a tackle that went horribly wrong. Hicks was just six minutes into her debut when she lifted Sienna Lofipo into an extremely dangerous position, with the Titans player lucky not to suffer a serious injury. It was a nightmare NRLW debut for Brisbane's Reegan Hicks, who was sent off for this dangerous tackle. ðŸ'° Watch #NRLWTitansBroncos on Ch.501 or stream on Kayo: — Fox League (@FOXNRL) July 13, 2025 'It's part of footy and it's just an accident,' Broncos coach Scott Prince said, with Hicks facing an extra week if she fights the charge and loses. 'It's a tackle that's gone wrong and I know that she's really upset and really remorseful for what she did. 'You hate to see it in the game, but it's a straight-up accident. She's really upset in the sheds. She's an 18-year-old who's just trying to do her best for her football team. 'She's loving life and trying to enjoy her first NRLW game, so it's pretty sad to see her get sent off. You can only imagine what's going through her mind at the moment. 'She'll cop what she needs to cop as far as the judiciary is concerned, but we'll rally around her and you'll see her very soon.' Eels star Kennedy Cherrington received a four-match suspension after she pleaded guilty to a grade 3 charge that was referred directly to the judiciary back in 2023. Titans lock Georgia Hale is also facing a week on the sidelines after she received a grade 2 dangerous contact charge for a twisting tackle that led to a stint in the sin bin on Sunday. Kitione Kautoga will go for scans on a left ankle injury - contact mechanism with weight of tackler coming down on legs causing external rotation of foot Video brings concern for syndesmosis injury - will be lucky to escape with low grade damage considering force involved. — NRL PHYSIO (@nrlphysio) July 13, 2025 In the NRL, Penrith's Izack Tago has been offered a one-match ban if he takes the early guilty plea for a grade 2 dangerous contact charge that went unpunished on the field. The tackle forced Eels back-rower Kitione Kautoga from the field with an ankle injury and left Eels coach Jason Ryles irate that his side wasn't even awarded a penalty. Leka Halasima and Tyson Smoothy were the only other players charged on Sunday but both can escape with a $1000 fine if they take the early guilty plea.

'Shouldn't be able to': Andrew Johns calls for NRL crackdown amid flurry of bans
Andrew Johns' anger around a third-man-in tackle from Karl Lawton has been vindicated after the Cowboys star was handed one of the most serious charges of the year. Eels pair Ryley Smith and centre Will Penisini are also both facing stints on the sidelines after being hit with dangerous throw charges from their victory over the Titans in the NRL on Sunday night. But it was Lawton's tackle on Siua Wong earlier on Sunday that left league 'Immortal' Johns fuming in commentary for Channel Nine and the Roosters forward facing up to six weeks out with a knee injury. Lawton was hit with a grade 3 dangerous contact charge for the first-half incident that forced Wong from the field after he was held upright by two defenders, before Lawton came in and collected him directly on the knee. Scans on Monday confirmed a medial ligament tear for the Roosters forward, meaning he's set to spend at least a month on the sidelines. The Cowboys forward was not even penalised for the tackle during the 42-8 loss, despite referee Ashley Klein and bunker officials having time to review the incident. Fortunately for the Roosters, five-eighth Sandon Smith was cleared of a serious knee injury after hobbling off in the second half. Siua Wong is expected to miss 4-6 weeks after suffering an MCL tear in Round 16 (via @ScottBaileyAAP).Likely moderate grade MCL sprain (partial ligament tear) with that recovery better news for the Roosters - scans have cleared Sandon Smith of any injury. — NRL PHYSIO (@nrlphysio) June 23, 2025 But the tackle on Wong left Johns fuming in commentary, with the league legend insisting the game needs to do more to stamp out third-man-in tackles that put the ball-carrier at risk. "It's dangerous, I hate it," Johns said. "If you have two players in the tackle, and momentum is pretty much (stopped), that third man shouldn't be able to go in like that. "A couple of years ago we saw Liam Knight get hit from behind and it pretty much destroyed every ligament in his knee. The player cannot see it coming. And what's come into the game is they back into the tackle so they can see the third man coming in and spearing at the knee. "And what's happened with that happening is we have crushers coming into the game, because of players turning and twisting looking for that third man." Lawton's charge is only the second grade-three for any offence this season, after Dolphins veteran Felise Kaufusi copped the same punishment for dangerous contact on Cowboy Tom Duffy last week. Only Manly prop Tof Sipley has been given a higher grading this season after being referred straight to the NRL judiciary for a hip-drop tackle that injured St George Illawarra's Mat Feagai in April. Lawton's clean record means he can accept a two-match ban with an early plea or risk a third game on the sidelines if he elects to fight the grading. RELATED: Roosters make call on DCE as pressure mounts for club to backflip Queensland Origin twist after ugly scenes for Walsh and Hammer Blow for Titans and Queensland after Origin hopeful ruled out Parramatta have also been dealt a double blow after Sunday night's 36-20 win over the Titans, with Eels hooker Smith and centre Penisini facing multiple games out after copping dangerous throw charges. Penisini's lifting tackle on Beau Fermor was the worst of the two and he's facing a three-week suspension for the 78th minute incident that saw the Gold Coast player land dangerously on his head. The Eels centre was sin-binned for the tackle and faces an extra week on the sidelines than his Parramatta teammate, due to his prior record. Smith's lifting tackle on Phillip Sami was more innocuous but still ultimately dangerous for the Titans player, with the Eels hooker facing two games out unless he decides to fight the charge. with agencies
