U.S. Issues Sweeping Travel Warning For Entire Continent

U.S. Issues Sweeping Travel Warning For Entire Continent originally appeared on Parade. With the end of summer on the horizon, many people might be busy setting up their final vacations of the season, allowing them to enjoy one last carefree trip before the official arrival of autumn. As summer prepares to end, however, the U.S. State Department has recently revised its travel advisory warning for a popular cruise destination, encouraging travelers to "exercise increased caution" when venturing to the continent. According to the agency's new travel advisory for Antarctica, anyone who plans on visiting the southern continent should be on the lookout for dangerous weather conditions that could jeopardize tourists' health and safety. As the State Department advised, American visitors to Antarctica should display "increased caution in Antarctica due to environmental hazards posed by extreme and unpredictable weather and limited emergency services." As a result of the new changes in Antarctica's weather patterns, the State Department went so far to update its travel advisory level for the continent to Level 2. Currently, the agency uses a total of four different levels to their travel advisories, ranging from Level 1 ("exercise normal precautions"), to Level 2 ("exercise increased precautions"), to Level 3 ("reconsider travel") to the highly restrictive Level 4 ("do not travel"). Nowadays, Antarctica serves as a common stomping ground for many cruise companies the world over, with Travel + Leisure listing such cruise lines as Expeditions, Quark Expeditions and Norwegian Cruise Line as making frequent stops at the continent. Should visitors continue with their plans to venture to Antarctica, the State Department specifically advises that they remain with a knowledgable tour guide familiar with Antarctica's shifting weather patterns. "Travel with a professional guide or organization such as those that are a member of the International Association of Antarctica Tour Operators, or, if organizing a private expedition, be self-sufficient and have emergency medical evacuation insurance," the department said.
