Molly Gordon Explains Why She Didn't Want ‘Oh, Hi!' To Be A Horror Movie

Oh, Hi! may be some young couples' worst nightmare, but star, co-writer and producer Molly Gordon was adamant the project not be a horror film. During a recent appearance on Late Night with Seth Meyers, Gordon explained that as she was attempting to get the Sophie Brooks-helmed project off the ground, those she was pitching to suggested she change the genre and tone of the movie. More from Deadline Bill Hader Reveals Why He Skipped 'SNL50' Neon's 'Together' Scores For Indies, Original Horror In Studio Dominated Top Ten - Specialty Box Office Seth Meyers Is Worried About Late-Night 'It's interesting. We were discussing that it's such a dark time [in the industry], but horror's kind of the only thing that's working,' she said. 'But yeah, people would go, 'I love the movie, but can she kill him at the end?' But it's like, when you think of When Harry Met Sally, what if Meg Ryan just killed him at the end? I want some just romantic movies, does there have to be death always?' In Oh, Hi! a romantic getaway turns sour as Iris (Gordon) realizes she and Isaac (Logan Lerman) are not on the same page about their relationship and its presumed exclusivity. Indignant at the prospect, Iris holds Isaac hostage as she navigates what she sees as a lovers' quarrel and not the dealbreaker it is. While Meyers argued there was a 'patina' of the film Misery — the Kathy Bates-starring thriller in which she plays an obsessive fan who kidnaps her favorite author and for which the actress won an Oscar — in Oh, Hi!, Gordon described her onscreen character as '10% crazier' than her real-life self, while Bates portrays someone '100% crazier.' To that end, The Bear actress is also releasing a cover of Dolly Parton and Kenny Rogers' 'Islands in the Stream,' featured in the Sony Pictures Classics movie, on Aug. 15, complete with cover art that pays homage to a scene from Misery. Since its July 25 release, Oh, Hi! has amassed a box office cume of $1.8 million. Women in Dark Times by Jacqueline Rose: One of the most thought-provoking writers working today

Women in Dark Times Author : Jacqueline Rose ISBN-13 : 9781804271711 Publisher : Fitzcarraldo Editions Guideline Price : £14.99 Jacqueline Rose's book, Women in Dark Times, claims to be about women who 'negotiate the perils of their lives' to say 'something urgent about feminism today'. Even without Trump's presidency (the preface is dated 'November 2024″), one seemingly doesn't have to look far for regressive or ultra-conservative policies being exacted on women's rights (or lack of). The book, originally published in 2014, comes with a new preface, in which Rose writes, '[s]urely, all dark times are dark for women? Today, woefully, I have to acknowledge the truth of that statement.' She might be forgiven for her pessimism. However, acknowledging truths, and difficult ones at that, we already know is in this psychoanalytically inspired writer's wheelhouse. From Rosa Luxembourg, to Marilyn Monroe, to a number of women killed by their fathers in modern day 'honour killings', to the artists Charlotte Salomon, Esther Shalev-Gerz, Yael Bartana and Thérèse Oulton, Rose's eclectic selection of women show us how to acknowledge other difficult truths about the patriarchy. Rose fills her book with evidence of both the public and private thoughts of the women she writes about. We're enlivened by Marilyn Monroe's deeply analytical mind, and troubled by the painter Charlotte Salomon's tragic, internal psychological conflict (both her mother and grandmother took their own lives before Salomon killed her own grandfather. She was then murdered, five months pregnant, in Auschwitz). READ MORE Either in their life or work, they all seem to be women who were on the borders of death or sanity. For Rose, proximity to these boundaries often compel, what she calls, 'the subterranean aspects of history and the human mind'. It's a slightly unwieldy book due to the varied roles and lives her subjects had. Rose's central thesis also might seem a little obscure to those not schooled in psychoanalysis or feminist theory. I wouldn't let this put you off, though, because Rose is one of the most interesting and thought-provoking writers working today. Women in Dark Times represents a more accessible way into the work of someone writing about challenging topics in a way that challenges you to think differently. Either way, it will make you want to read more about the women she writes about (and Rose I hope), which surely is the point anyway?

Miley Cyrus reveals why she's grateful the house she shared with Liam Hemsworth burned down

reflected on the 'dark time' when she and ex-husband Liam Hemsworth lost her $2.525M four-bedroom Malibu house in the 2018 Woolsey Fire one month before they got married. 'When my house burned down, that was the biggest blessing I've ever had in my life, actually,' the 32-year-old pop star admitted during the Q&A at her Something Beautiful event Tuesday. 'Losing everything and being able to rebuild, and to be able to be purposeful and choose every piece that I'm gonna collect or also just about the people in my life. 'And I guess for me, when my house burned down, a lot of my relationships also burned down, and that again just led me to such magic and to have so much gratitude.' Indeed, Miley (born Destiny) and the Australian 35-year-old - who previously split from 2013-2016 - divorced just eight months later in 2020. 'I think what I would have told my younger self is to appreciate those darker times because, like I said, they are only leading you into the light,' Cyrus noted onstage Manhattan's Metrograph. The three-time Grammy winner had recorded her first album in 2005 at Rainbowland recording studio located on the two-acre compound. In 2023, Miley revealed she suffered anxiety attacks at the memory because she was on the South African set of Netflix's Black Mirror when she heard her two-story home was destroyed. 'Actually as my house was burning down I was strapped to a gurney with my hands locked in handcuffs strapped to a bed,' Cyrus recalled on TikTok. The very next day, the More to Lose songstress had to film her pop star character Ashley O's dance-filled On a Roll music video, shrugging: 'The show must go on!' In 2021, Miley began dating Liily drummer Maxx Morando, who's one of the eight producers credited on her upcoming album. Cyrus' ninth studio album Something Beautiful drops May 30 followed by the Tribeca Film Festival world premiere of the 'visual' film version on June 6 at the Beacon Theatre in Manhattan. The Beautiful That Way singer - who quit touring in 2023 - gushed: 'This album has to start with me loving it and then the love that I have for it, whether you know it or not, it's gonna be coming through the speakers when you're listening.' Meanwhile, Liam is still going strong with his girlfriend since 2019, Australian model Gabriella Brooks.
