Does coffee cause bloating?
Coffee can cause bloating in some people. Generally, it is advisable to avoid coffee and other beverages containing caffeine if a person experiences bloating. While coffee may not be the main cause of bloating — for example, it can be due to an underlying condition such as celiac disease or irritable bowel syndrome — avoiding coffee can help alleviate bloating or prevent symptoms from worsening. Coffee can stimulate or increase the secretion of gastric acid. Gastric juice secretion can lead to bloating and other symptoms such as stomach pain and burning. Decaffeinated (decaf) coffee may also cause bloating. Decaf coffee still contains some caffeine, though in very small amounts, and it can still increase the secretion of gastric acid. However, it is less likely to cause bloating than regular coffee. Adding milk or creamer to coffee may also make bloating more likely. This is because milk and milk-based products increase the risk of gas in some people. Not everybody who drinks coffee experiences bloating. Participants in a 2015 study reported an average score of 1 out of 10 for bloating, where 1 referred to experiencing the symptoms 'not at all.' If a person who drinks coffee regularly experiences bloating, they may wish to reduce the amount of coffee they drink or switch to decaf to check whether it makes a difference. Other steps that may help include: getting enough regular exercise or physical activity drinking plenty of water avoiding other caffeinated drinks such as tea and fizzy drinks If bloating persists, it may be due to another cause or underlying condition. It is best to speak with a doctor for an accurate diagnosis. The doctor can help determine the cause of frequent or persistent bloating and advise on treatments that may help. » Learn more:Ways to reduce bloating
