Wandering deer killed on suburban road
A deer wreaking havoc on Melbourne roads during Thursday rush hour has been killed. The deer was reported to authorities as it walked along the Eastern Freeway at Kew about 4am, a police spokeswoman said. By 7am the animal was in the area of a major intersection at Doncaster Rd and Burke Rd in Kew East. The animal was then hit and killed by a motorist. At 9.30am, workers were removing the large carcass. Police at the scene told NewsWire it was not uncommon for deer to walk out of Darebin Parklands into the surrounding suburbs. Images show the animal laying dead on Doncaster Rd. There are more than 50,000 licenced deer hunters in Victoria, and there are no bag limits or off-season for most of the invasive species.
