Man arrested after stabbing a Palm Springs police officer in the hand

A 41-year-old man was arrested Tuesday after stabbing a police officer in the hand during a disturbance call, the Palm Springs Police Department said. Phillip Smith was taken into custody around 2:40 p.m. on April 22 after officers with the Palm Springs Police Department responded to reports of a "disturbance" in the 1500 block of North Sunrise Way, according to a press release. "Despite the unprovoked attack, officers responded with restraint and used only minimal force to quickly subdue Smith and take him into custody without further incident," the press release said. The police officer was taken to the hospital and is in stable condition. The police officers were assisting a local nonprofit in removing a person causing a disturbance, according to a Facebook post made by Chief Andy Mills. He noted it was the second time in recent weeks that officers had been assaulted. Smith is expected to face charges, including assault with a deadly weapon on a peace officer. Additional charges may follow as the investigation continues. Jennifer Cortez covers education in the Coachella Valley. Major upset! No. 3 seed Coco Gauff falls to wild card Belinda Bencic in tense Indian Wells match

Coco Gauff, the top-ranked American woman at the BNP Paribas Open, was defeated by Swiss player Belinda Bencic in a nailbiter Wednesday, losing 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 in the Round of 16 matchup. Gauff, the No. 3 seed in the tournament who made the semifinals last year, was coming off a victory over two-time Indian Wells finalist Maria Sakkari earlier in the week, but her momentum was halted by Bencic, who entered the tournament as a wildcard qualifier. The tense third set saw both players hold serve through the first eight games. A key moment came in the ninth game, when Bencic came back from a 40-0 deficit and won a break point against Gauff. The Swiss player went on to win the final decisive game. Gauff, who turns 21 on Thursday, was the youngest woman to reach the Round of 16 in three straight years at Indian Wells since Caroline Wozniacki over a decade ago. Bencic, whose career-high ranking is No. 4 but who entered the tournament as the 58th-ranked player, found her footing against the American as the game went on. The Swiss player, who also won a gold medal at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021, recently returned to the tour after giving birth to her first child last spring. Gauff entered the match with a 2-1 record against Bencic, most recently defeating her in a three-set match at the Australian Open in January. During the match, Gauff also continued to work on her new serve routine, which has given her some trouble in recent days. In her opening-round match, she had a whopping 21 double faults; on Wednesday, she had eight. With the victory, Bencic will play the winner of No. 4 seed and fellow American Madison Keys and No. 19 seed Donna Vekic in the quarterfinals. Tom Coulter is a reporter for The Desert Sun. BNP Paribas Open: American Jessica Pegula falls to Elina Svitolina after three-hour rain delay

One of three American women left at the BNP Paribas Open, No. 4 seed Jessica Pegula was ousted Tuesday by No. 23 seed Elina Svitolina in a back-and-forth match that was delayed for three hours due to rain. The comeback win for Svitolina came after the Ukrainian lost the first set 7-5 to Pegula. She then stormed back, comfortably winning the second set 6-1. After one game in the third set, the match was paused due to steady rain in Indian Wells. Pegula struggled once play resumed three hours later, hitting the net on several shots and slapping her racquet in frustration on one missed shot. She won just two of the final seven games in the third set, losing 6-2. Svitolina's serve offered a mixed bag of results. She had five aces, but also seven double faults, mainly in the first two sets. During her post-match interview, Svitolina said she wanted to regroup after missing some opportunities in the first set. "I got a little bit angry, a little bit fired up in that second set and tried to play better tennis," said Svitolina, who advanced to her first WTA 1000 quarterfinal since 2021. 'I'm really happy with the way I was able to stay composed, even after the rain delay.' Svitolina, who mentioned a foot surgery she underwent last fall that posed a challenge, also drew courtside support from her spouse and fellow pro tennis player Gaël Monfils, a Frenchman who was defeated by Grigor Dimitrov in grueling three-set nailbiter Monday night. Svitolina attended the late-night match, and when asked who takes care of their child the next morning, she gave credit to her mom and the family's nanny. With the loss Tuesday, Pegula saw her seven-game win streak snapped, after she won her seventh career title last week at the ATX Open in Austin, Texas. Svitolina now advances to the quarterfinals — marking her best run at the tournament since she advanced to the semifinals in 2019 — where she will play No. 9 seed Mirra Andreeva, who defeated No. 7 seed Elena Rybakina 6-1, 6-2. With Pegula's elimination, just two American women — No. 3 seed Coco Gauff and No. 5 seed Madison Keys — remained in the tournament, with both of them scheduled to play in the Round of 16 on Wednesday.
