Eight per cent increase in impaired drivers in OPP West Region
The OPP West Region has seen 880 impaired driving charges so far this year, marking an eight per cent increase compared to the same time period last year.
The number marks the highest total in all OPP regions. It also tops the province-wide increase, which sits at three per cent.
In Essex County, a total of 117 impaired charges were laid from January until June, topping last year's number by two.
But, over the five-year average, Essex OPP Const. Steven Duguay said impaired charges in the county are up 40 per cent.
'We know the dangers of impaired driving, how much it can cost you if you do get caught, having a criminal record, your insurance rates will increase, but it's also the safety of friends and family that are out on the road,' he said.
'Look out for each other. We've shared this message for years and years and years. I just want to repeat it, let's make this thing non-existent anymore.'
OPP remind to plan ahead, use designated drivers or ride services when impaired, and report all suspected impaired drivers.
