Chilean lithium miner SQM begins laying off 5% of local workforce
SANTIAGO, June 25 (Reuters) - Chilean lithium miner SQM ( opens new tab has begun laying off workers in its Chilean operations, according to a union memo to workers seen by Reuters on Wednesday. A union source said the dismissals would amount to 5% of its workforce nationwide. SQM employs 8,344 people in Chile and elsewhere, with three-quarters working at the northern Chile operations where it extracts lithium, a key battery metal. SQM declined to comment.

Mexico's Pemex to save $184 million this year in reorganization
MEXICO CITY, June 4 (Reuters) - Mexican state energy company Pemex said on Wednesday that it plans to save 3.53 billion pesos ($183.89 million) this year and another 1.27 billion pesos next year as part of an institutional reorganization. In a regulatory filing, Pemex said layoffs would make up 1.4% of historical full-time positions, and that 71% of its total payroll spending would go to operational areas. May 22 (Reuters) - Mexican state oil company Pemex plans to layoff over 3000 tenured employees and save up around 10.5 billion pesos ($543.40 million) in the process, Bloomberg reported citing a company document dated April.
