By the mid-1980s, Magic Johnson had already conquered just about everything worth conquering. Championships, Finals MVPs, endorsement deals, you name it. But even with all the on-court success and off-court fame, he was still living in a Culver City apartment, which didn't quite align with his superstar status in the Association. All of that changed when the Los Angeles Lakers icon finally found a home that matched his off-court persona and energy: a six-bedroom, Tudor-style estate tucked deep in the hills of Bel-Air. This wasn't about flexing his money, although it definitely had some of that as well; it was about finally finding the place he could call home, no matter how cheesy it might sound. From the moment Magic stepped foot inside, he knew the search for his place under the sun was over. "We started off with this one," Johnson said in 1985 via the LA Times. "I told him, 'I don't have to look anymore, George (his attorney). This is it.' All I had to see was one room (now his disco), the racquetball court and the bathtub. Where else am I really gonna be?" "I always wanted to own a home, but I wanted it to be different. I wanted a special place," Magic Man added. "Hey, I'm blessed. I never would have imagined this. The house I grew up in back home could probably fit into the gym (racquetball court), and your imagination can only go as far as what you've seen." So perfect that it felt like a dream for Johnson The house sits at the end of a winding road, with canyon walls on both sides and nothing but open green space stretching out behind it. It's quiet. No traffic, no noise, no distractions. Just a backyard with twin grills, a red-brick pool deck (in which Magic hadn't just yet jumped in) and a whole lot of open blue sky above the City of Angels. It was perfect for enjoying the little bit of time that an NBA player of his caliber has on his hands. However, that's the kind of setup that can easily break your daily routine, and, in Johnson's case, mess up with practice schedules. "I almost missed practice a couple times," the man who orchestrated the Showtime in LA said. "I'd be out here eating breakfast. I'd be daydreaming, just kind of in a trance, and then I'd look at my watch and see I was almost late for practice." In addition to all that, inside the house, Magic had transformed one of the rooms into a disco, complete with lights and a sound system, where he could unwind and throw a few moves when the mood struck. "I don't just like music, I love it," Johnson added. "When I saw this room, I said, 'Oh, man, I know what I want to do with this .' I spend an hour or two in here every day. This is where I live." Magic didn't stop after getting his mansion That Bel-Air mansion might've been Magic's first real taste of a settled life in Los Angeles, but he didn't settle for long. After moving in, Johnson added three more championship rings to his resume: one in 1985, another in 1987 and his final one in 1988. He finally received his first, well-deserved, MVP award and added two more for good measure. Magic Man also continued to elevate the Lakers dynasty alongside Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and James Worthy to make it one of the greatest dynasties in sports history. By the time the decade was over, so was the debate about where he stood among the game's greatest point guards. Johnson had redefined the position and the trophy case did all the talking for him. Even now, 40 years later, he's still the bar that every new floor general gets measured against. Turning 50 in intergalactic style! Designer Alice Temperley throws wild themed birthday bash with a star-studded guestlist, llamas and SEVEN cakes in grade-II listed Georgian family manor
Royal fashion designer Alice Temperley celebrated her 50th birthday at the weekend with a raucous intergalactic disco-themed party at her family's Grade II-listed country house in Somerset - complete with roaming llamas, seven birthday cakes and a tent full of sequinned guests dancing into the early hours. Alice, whose signature boho designs are a firm favourite of the Princess of Wales and Hollywood stars including Keria Knightley and Sienna Miller, hosted a three-day extravaganza. The guest list was a mix of British fashion and society: models Jodie Kidd, 46, Arizona Muse, 36, and Jade Parfitt, 47 as well as Leah Wood, artist daughter of Rolling Stone Ronnie Wood. Alice was also joined by her parents, Julian and Dianna, as well as her siblings, Mary, Matilda and Ed. The party took place at the family's historic Georgian manor, which was festooned with disco balls, fairy lights, lanterns and flags for the occasion. One photo shared by Ibiza A-list concierge founder Serena Cook shows two motorbikes parked outside as guests dressed in head-to-toe glitter walk down the grand stone steps. The birthday girl wore a flowing white embroidered gown layered with a dramatic coat trimmed in faux fur, finishing the look with chandelier earrings and a black wide-brimmed hat. Her mother, Diana, wore a full-length gold sequin dress and was seen embracing Alice beside a flaming spit roast. Inside the tented marquee, guests dined at candle-lit banquet tables covered in checked tablecloths, flowers, wine bottles and plates piled high with food. At one point Jodie Kidd posed playfully for a photo while cradling two dachshunds at the table. Jade - a Nineties catwalk star who rose to fame alongside Naomi Campbell and Linda Evangalista - posted a series of photos from the party on Instagram alongside the caption: 'Thank you Alice for another epic party, truly my favourite place to be with the best gang, celebrating one of the most generous and hardworking people I know.' Alice is well known for throwing big bashes - but the party to celebrate her 47th birthday in 2022 went out with a different kind of bang. The Mail's Richard Eden reported at the time that firefighters were called to the festivities, also held in Somerset, after the property's fire alarm was set off by a bonfire lit during the party. Long-time friend Jade Parfitt was later pictured, dressed in one of the designer's leopard print gowns, holding one of the hoses that the firemen used to put out the fire. Now based primarily in Somerset, where Alice lives and works, the label has pivoted to a direct-to-consumer model and focuses on bridalwear, made-to-order gowns and small seasonal collections, with an emphasis on sustainability and craftsmanship. Alice's label has long been a favourite of Kate Middleton, with the Princess of Wales choosing its distinctive designs to attend a number of high profile events over the years. In an interview with the Daily Telegraph, the designer was admiring of Kate - then the Duchess of Cambridge - describing her as 'the perfect modern-day woman.' She told the publication: 'The Duchess is an inspiration. She's very graceful, gracious and she's a brilliant ambassador for British fashion. She mixes up designer and high street; the perfect modern-day woman.' In 2017, Kate attended a reception at Buckingham Palace to mark World Mental Health Day in a striking blue lace dress by the British brand. And, famously, Alice designed the green backless number worn by Pippa Middleton to her sister's wedding reception.
