Ontario Provincial Police say a driver is facing significant fines and several charges after being stopped on Highway 417 in Ottawa twice in the same day for the same issue.
Police stopped the driver at around 10:30 a.m. Tuesday near Carling Avenue when an officer's automatic licence plate reader (ALPR) showed the vehicle's plate permit was expired.
The driver did not have insurance on the vehicle, the OPP said.
'Because the Compulsory Automobile Insurance Act does not allow for vehicle impoundment when a driver does not have insurance, the vehicle was initially towed back to the owner's residence with the understanding they would obtain proper insurance,' police said in a post on X.
The same driver was then pulled over again at around 2 p.m. on Highway 417 near Anderson Road.
'The driver now faces 10 charges and $10,000 in fines for driving twice without insurance,' the OPP said.
