TM rolls out RM10m digital push to empower 2,200 B40 entrepreneurs
KUALA LUMPUR, July 30 — Telekom Malaysia Bhd (TM), through Unifi Business has introduced Usahawan Digital TM to empower 2,200 B40 entrepreneurs from the e-Kasih database equipping them with critical digital tools and skills to thrive in the digital economy. The leading integrated telco and digital technology group said the initiative valued at RM10 million, averaged RM5,000 per entrepreneur, delivered in-kind through devices, digital solutions, and training resources. It said the programme will deliver three core offerings — skill enhancement, digital business tools and empowerment programmes. TM group chief executive officer Amar Huzaimi Md Deris said as an enabler of Malaysia's digital future, the company 'is proud to be part of this inclusive national movement to empower the rakyat.' 'Through Usahawan Digital TM, we are providing digital tools, skills, and 5G connectivity to help micro-entrepreneurs transform their livelihoods. Majority unaffected by new TNB billing structure
EIGHTY-FIVE percent of the population in Peninsular Malaysia will not be impacted by the new electricity tariff structure that came into effect on July 1, says Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof ( pic ). Fadillah, who is also the Energy Transition and Water Transformation Minister, said this is because a significant portion of domestic users, as well as micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs), are eligible for rebates. 'The key focus now is to promote efficient energy use. Those who consume energy more efficiently will be eligible for rebates,' he said during the oral question-and-answer session. Announced on June 20, the new tariff is designed to reflect actual supply costs and ensure fairer cost distribution. Unlike the previous system, it introduces multiple components such as capacity charges, network charges and retail charges, and shifts billing from an economic sector-based rate to one based on voltage connection levels. 'This approach enhances transparency. The government has put in place safeguards so the impact on domestic users remains minimal. In fact, domestic users consuming 600kWh or less monthly will be exempt from paying retail charges,' he said. Those consuming up to 1,000kWh will also receive energy efficiency incentives, while MSMEs using less than 200kWh monthly will benefit from similar assistance. These measures, he said, are intended to help businesses manage operational costs without passing them on to consumers. Fadillah stressed that the role of Tenaga Nasional Bhd (TNB) as a public listed company includes maintaining investor confidence while reinvesting profits into critical upgrades, especially in accommodating the growing share of renewable energy. 'Much of this profit will go back into upgrading the grid system to ensure reliable and affordable electricity. If the grid isn't improved, it won't be able to receive renewable energy, affecting energy security,' he said. He also assured that the government will continue the RM40 Electricity Bill Rebate Programme for hardcore poor households registered under the e-Kasih system, with RM55mil allocated for this year. In addition, the government is offering rebates for the purchase of energy-efficient appliances such as four- or five-star-rated air conditioners and refrigerators. 'When people choose energy-saving devices, they'll be rewarded with rebates at the point of purchase,' he said. Fadillah also encouraged eligible consumers to sign up for the 'time of use' electricity pricing scheme, where rates are cheaper during off-peak hours. However, this requires a smart meter to be installed and activated by TNB. To support this, the government is fast-tracking the rollout of smart meters nationwide. 'Whether in urban or rural areas, those who use energy wisely – particularly households that stay within 600kWh – can benefit from various incentives,' he said. Separately, the Cabinet has approved the implementation of an Automatic Fuel Adjustment (AFA) mechanism to replace the existing Imbalance Cost Pass-Through (ICPT). Unlike the ICPT, which adjusted fuel costs every six months, AFA will be revised monthly, with increases above 10% from the previous month requiring ministerial approval.

YaPEIM allocates RM4m for 50 homes for underprivileged
KEPALA BATAS: The Yayasan Pembangunan Ekonomi Islam Malaysia (YaPEIM) has set a target to construct 50 homes this year for the underprivileged, with an allocation of RM4 million under its Sinar Lestari YaPEIM initiative. Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Religious Affairs) Datuk Dr Mohd Na'im Mokhtar said each housing unit, costing approximately RM80,000, will be built in collaboration with strategic partners for the B40 group and recipients listed under the e-Kasih database, to provide them with safer and more comfortable homes. 'The Sinar Lestari YaPEIM, launched in 2020, has so far allocated RM13.5 million for 293 new construction and renovation projects nationwide as of June this year,' he added. 'A total of 167 renovation projects and 126 new construction projects have been implemented, with 225 projects completed while 68 are still in progress. Specifically, in Penang, YaPEIM has undertaken nine projects, comprising five new builds and four renovations, amounting to RM460,000,' he said. He said this after officiating the Sinar Lestari YaPEIM programme in Penaga, where three families received assistance to build new homes during the event. Mohd Na'im said the assistance provided under the initiative was not merely about building comfortable homes but also symbolised the MADANI Government's commitment to fostering a caring society and ensuring that no underprivileged group is left behind. Meanwhile, a recipient of the new house, Tahir Suhid, 55, expressed his family's gratitude and joy for receiving the housing aid. He shared that for more than 15 years, they had been renting a home on Jalan Pasir Gebu here, as they could not afford to own one. Tahir, who was previously a fisherman, has not gone to sea for over two years and now helps his wife, Norlia Aziz, 45, who runs a small business. He said he first purchased a plot of land through an installment plan before applying for YaPEIM's assistance to build a house on his own land. 'Our family is truly grateful to YaPEIM for this support. This house means a great deal to me, my wife, and our five children, aged between six and 25. Three of them are still in school,' he said. - Bernama
