Shortage of one vegetable looming after driest spring in a century
British farmers anticipate a shortage of peas in supermarkets following the UK's driest spring in over a century.
Record-breaking dry weather, including three heatwaves, prompted the earliest pea harvest in Britain for 14 years.
The National Farmers Union reported that vining pea growers in key eastern regions experienced up to a 30 per cent reduction in yield.
Crops are maturing too quickly due to the drought, resulting in shrivelled produce and a significant decrease in peas per pod.
The Met Office confirmed England endured its driest spring in over 100 years, followed by the warmest June on record.
