Diamondbacks RHP Corbin Burnes (elbow) to undergo MRI
June 2 - Arizona Diamondbacks standout right-hander Corbin Burnes exited Sunday's game against the Washington Nationals in the fifth inning with right elbow discomfort and will undergo an MRI exam on Monday. Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo didn't attempt to mask his level of concern when he met with reporters after the 3-1 victory. "Sometimes I tell you guys I'm minimally concerned," Lovullo said. "I'm more than that." Burnes was trying to take the patient approach. "I've never had anything like this before so I really have nothing to compare it to," Burnes said. "I won't really know until we look at it." Burnes allowed a two-out single to CJ Abrams and immediately motioned to the dugout for a trainer to come to the mound, then yelled in frustration. The conversation was brief with Burnes communicating that there was an issue with the elbow. "He basically called us out there in the fifth inning," Lovullo said. "He felt that his elbow was uncomfortable. As soon as you hear 'elbow,' you want to take your pitcher off of the mound. "We're going to remain as optimistic as possible that we're going to get great news through the course of the MRI." Burnes, 30, said there was no particular pitch that gave him concern. He said it was a gradual situation where his velocity was diminishing. "It started to get tight on me. I saw the velo starting to drop and the movement on my pitches," Burnes said. "We kind of got to the point in the fifth inning where I tried two others time to put away Abrams and I just couldn't do it. It got to the point where the tightness was too much and we didn't feel like we needed to push any farther. Hopefully we caught it early, hopefully it's not bad." Burnes, a four-time All-Star and 2021 National League Cy Young Award winner, is in his first season with the Diamondbacks after signing a six-year, $210 million deal in the offseason. "It's a gut-punch," Lovullo said. "He's tough. He rarely complains about anything. When you see him wave the trainer and coaches out there, you're holding your breath. It's tough, it's very tough." Burnes gave up one run and four hits in 4 2/3 innings before his exit. He struck out six and walked one. "It feels sad," Arizona third baseman Eugenio Suarez said of Burnes' injury. "He's been pitching really well and then he left the game today with something in his elbow. I pray that we don't miss him for a long time." Burnes is 3-2 with a 2.66 ERA in 11 starts. He has struck out 63 in 64 1/3 innings. Burnes is 63-38 with a 3.15 ERA and 1,114 strikeouts in 210 appearances (149 starts) in eight seasons with the Milwaukee Brewers (2018-23), Baltimore Orioles (2024) and Diamondbacks (2025). Sunday's victory was just the second in the past 11 games for Arizona. --Field Level Media

Braves RHP AJ Smith-Shawver exits start after feeling 'pop' in elbow
Atlanta Braves right-handed pitcher AJ Smith-Shawver exited Thursday's start with a right elbow injury after he "felt it pop," according to Braves manager Brian Snitker. In the third inning of an eventual 5-4 road loss to the Philadelphia Phillies in the first game of a doubleheader, Smith-Shawver was struck in his right ankle by a comebacker off the bat of Bryson Stott. After throwing a warmup pitch, the righty remained in the game before wincing while allowing a flyout to Trea Turner. "Anytime you hear those words, when they describe soreness and 'I felt something pop,' then that's usually not real good," Snitker said. "But we've got to look at it first." Smith-Shawver was sent back to Atlanta for additional testing. He was 3-2 with a 3.67 ERA heading into Thursday, including a 3-0 record with a 3.27 ERA over his past six starts. He allowed two runs on three hits over 2 2/3 innings of a no-decision. --Field Level Media

Pirates pitcher Jared Jones to miss 2025 season after undergoing elbow surgery
Jared Jones' second season in the big leagues is over before it even began. The Pittsburgh Pirates' right-handed pitcher underwent elbow surgery on Wednesday and will not return in 2025. The 23-year-old Jones initially complained of elbow pain in mid-March. Jones was in the process of rehabbing the injury when he felt discomfort in the elbow last week while doing long toss (100 feet). The decision to have surgery was made on Tuesday after Jones met with Dr. Keith Meister. The extent of the damage to the elbow wasn't initially known, said Pirates director of sports medicine Todd Tomczyk. While Tomczyk declined to put a timetable on a possible return to play for Jones, he confirmed Jones will be out for at least the remainder of this season. Jones made the Pirates out of spring training in 2024 and pitched well, going 6-8 with a 4.14 ERA. Pittsburgh had hoped Jones would be featured near the top of the rotation, along with reigning National League Rookie of the Year Paul Skenes and veteran Mitch Keller. Tomczyk said surgery was one of the options presented to Jones at the time of the injury, but Jones, with the support of the club and other medical experts, opted for rehab to give him a "fighting chance" to pitch in 2025. Jones was shut down for six weeks, then began throwing from 60 feet in late April without issue. It wasn't until the program was extended to 100 feet that Jones felt discomfort. If a full elbow reconstruction was required, Jones will likely be out at least 12 months, putting 2026 in jeopardy as well. First baseman Enmanuel Valdez will also miss the rest of the season after having surgery on his left shoulder.
