More than 150 are dead and 3,000 made homeless as rainfall unleashes massive flooding in Nigeria

More than 150 people are dead and at least 3,000 have lost their homes after torrential rainfall unleashed massive flooding in Nigeria. Heavy pre-dawn showers lashed a market town on Friday, leaving roofs barely visible and residents waist-deep in water. The rain affected at least 500 households across three communities in Mokwa, about 230 miles west of Nigeria's capital Abuja, Niger state agency spokesman Ibrahim Audu Husseini said. Communities in northern Nigeria have been experiencing prolonged dry spells worsened by climate change and excessive rainfall that leads to severe flooding during the brief wet season. Nigerian President Bola Tinubu said he has directed the activation of the national emergency response centre to quickly assist the state. 'Search-and-rescue operations are ongoing, and all relevant federal agencies have been mobilised to support the state government's efforts,' Mr Tinubu said in a late night message. 'Relief materials and temporary shelter assistance are being deployed without delay. We will ensure that no Nigerian affected by this disaster is left behind or unheard of.' More than 150 people are dead and at least 3,000 have lost their homes after torrential rainfall unleashed massive flooding in Nigeria Residents were mourning the dead on Saturday as some awaited news of their loved ones still unaccounted for. They also lamented the destruction caused in the town, a major meeting point where traders from the south buy beans, onions and other food from farmers in the north. 'We lost many lives, and the properties, our farm produce. Those that have their storage have lost it,' said resident Kazeem Muhammed. It comes after in September 2024 hundreds of thousands in Nigeria fled their homes to avoid sweeping floods that devastated the country and allowed nearly 300 prisoners to escape a single jail. Maiduguri, the capital of the northern Borno state, suffered its worst floods in decades, which decimated a dam that was holding back the water. The flood killed at least 30 people according to the country's emergency agency and affected a million others, with hundreds of thousands of people forced into camps for displaced people. In Maiduguri, the floods 'brought down the walls of the correctional facilities including the Medium Security Custodial Centre, as well as the staff quarters in the city,' officials said. This lead to nearly 300 prisoners escaping. But, regular citizens weren't quite as lucky. Fatima Yakubu told AFP she woke up in the middle of the night to find her legs submerged as water rose in her home in northeastern Nigeria. She screamed and people helped her escape with her six children. Flood waters displaced more than one million people in and around Maiduguri and thousands of homes were engulfed by rapidly rising waters after a dam burst following two days of torrential rain.

Runaway concrete truck plows into Daly City homes

A runaway concrete mixer truck rolled down a steep street in a Daly City neighborhood and smashed into two houses Friday morning, leaving them severely damaged, authorities said. The incident happened shortly before 11 a.m. on Shipley Avenue near Simpson Drive between Callan Boulevard and Gellert Boulevard. The truck crashed into the front of a parked vehicle before plowing into one home and coming to rest embedded in the house next door, leaving both with significant structural damage. A concrete mixer truck is seen lodged in a house on Shipley Avenue in Daly City after it rolled down the street, hitting two homes, May 30, 2025. KPIX / Stringer The North County Fire Authority told CBS News San Francisco that there were no injuries reported, but more than a dozen people were displaced as a result of the crash. The Daly City Building Department red-tagged both buildings, and Pacific Gas and Electric crews were on hand to shut off utilities to the homes. Crews worked for hours to transfer the cement to another truck so it could be extricated from the building.

SoCal Gas begins work to restore natural gas services to residents in Rancho Palos Verdes

Crews from SoCal Gas will begin work to restore natural gas to hundreds of residents in the Rancho Palos Verdes area, a year after services were shut off. After nearly a year of not having natural gas, residents can see the finish line getting closer. In July 2024, the utility company SoCal Gas cut off natural gas service to the Portuguese Bend community of Rancho Palos Verdes after continued land movement in the area. In September 2024, Gov. Gavin Newsom declared a state of emergency in the area, saying severe storms had significantly accelerated land movement to an average of 9 to 12 inches per week. The city also declared a local emergency and issued evacuation warnings urging residents to gather important documents and items. Last summer, Mayor John Cruikshank said he was worried the gas service would be the first domino to fall, a prediction that ended up being correct. Crews were seen Friday morning digging into the ground so they can install new equipment and infrastructure. Once they complete that, they will go door to door and start restoring natural gas service to homes. There are some properties in the areas that were red or yellow tagged and are too badly damaged to have service restored. SoCal Gas said there are about 22 customers who should get their services back by July. A spokesperson from the utility company said thy are doing upgrades to make sure they're able to adjust to changing conditions. "We're installing automatic shutoff valves, monitoring, reassessing and figure out where to go from there," Brian Haas, a SoCal Gas spokesperson, said. Unfortunately, there are still hundreds of homeowners in Rancho Palos Verdes who are dealing with the ongoing land movement. Some people have chosen to leave, taking advantage of a $42 million voluntary buyout program from FEMA and the state of California. SoCal Gas has said it does appear the land movement has slowed in some areas like Seaview, Portuguese Bend Beach Club and Rolling Hills. Crews will continue monitoring other areas to see if it's safe to bring back utilities there too.

1 Killed and at Least 7 Are Injured in Tornado in Kentucky, Officials Say

One person was killed and at least seven others were injured when a tornado struck central Kentucky on Friday morning, the Washington County Sheriff's Office said. Photos posted by the sheriff's office showed debris strewed across the ground next to an overturned car in a neighborhood said to be in Washington County. The sheriff's office had also asked residents to stay off the roads while crews responded to 'multiple emergency calls.' A clerk at the sheriff's office, Ellen Goatley, said that officials also found a 3-year-old after conducting a search-and-rescue effort for the child. She said that she did not have any information on the child's condition. Gov. Andy Beshear of Kentucky posted a message on social media asking people to 'please pray for these families and everyone affected.' He said was postponing planned trips to Laurel and Pulaski Counties because of the severe weather. 'Everyone, please stay weather aware today,' he said in another message. 'Let's do what's needed to keep everyone safe.' The National Weather Service has warned of possible severe storms with wind damage, large hail and a few tornadoes across much of the Mid-Atlantic and southeastern United States on Friday. The Weather Service also said that heavy rain may cause flash flooding from eastern Kentucky to southern New York. This is a developing story.
