The National Eritrean Festival 2025 was officially opened this morning by President Isaias Afwerki at the Expo Grounds. The opening ceremony, which featured colorful traditional dances and songs from the country's various ethnic groups, was attended by Ministers, senior Government and People's Front for Democracy and Justice (PFDJ) officials, members of the diplomatic corps, and numerous nationals from inside the country and abroad. President Isaias, accompanied by senior officials, toured the regional villages that showcase the traditions and living standards of each ethnic group, as well as innovations, creative works, and products of various enterprises. He was provided with briefings by experts at the respective displays. The President also visited pavilions highlighting the status and expansion of social services, exhibitions of agricultural products, natural and cultural resources, the rich biodiversity of the Red Sea, as well as historical and ancient heritage sites. Photo and sculpture exhibitions organized by the Ministry of Defense and individual artists, displays depicting the activities of the Crops and Livestock Corporation, a book fair, paintings, and other exhibitions are among the highlights of the annual national festival. The festival will remain open until 17 August, featuring traditional music and dances, children's programs, locally produced films, bazaars, seminars, and other activities. The eating habits that could lower your risk of diabetes

Research indicates that several healthy diets can significantly reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes, irrespective of a person's ethnicity. An analysis by University of Cambridge researchers, involving 826,000 people across 33 studies, examined the Dash, Mediterranean, and Alternative Healthy Eating Index (AHEI) diets. Adherence to these dietary patterns led to substantial reductions in type 2 diabetes risk: Dash by 23 per cent, Mediterranean by 17 per cent, and AHEI by 21 per cent. The study found that the benefits of these diets were consistent across African, Asian, European, and Hispanic ethnic groups, suggesting universal applicability. These findings strengthen the evidence that such dietary patterns can be promoted across all populations to reduce type 2 diabetes risk.

Chinese police mount Xinjiang manhunt for fugitive wanted over wounding of 2 people

Police in China's far western region of Xinjiang are appealing for the public's help to find a fugitive wanted over the wounding of two people near the border with Kazakhstan. The authorities did not offer a motive for the attacks but the incident is one of the few publicly reported cases in recent years of intentional harm in Xinjiang – a region that is strictly controlled and politically sensitive. Police are searching for a 29-year-old herder identified as Kasitiele wanted in relation to the attack last Thursday in Huojierte Mongol ethnic township in Emin county. The man is a resident of the county's Woyijiayilao Pasture on the outskirts of Tacheng prefecture, an area in northern Xinjiang close to the border with Kazakhstan. The pasture is home to 14 ethnic groups, including Han, Kazakh, Hui and Kyrgyz, with ethnic minorities accounting for over 90 per cent of the population. Police in neighbouring Yumin county said on Wednesday that both victims of the attack were in a stable condition and did not have life-threatening injuries. They urged the public to report any relevant information and 'to not believe, create or spread rumours'.
