Bahrain Launches First Solar Power Plant Project To Boost Clean Energy Goals
The Electricity and Water Authority (EWA) has announced the launch of Bahrain's first-ever solar power plant project, with a planned capacity of 150 megawatts. The project, located in the southern part of the Kingdom near Bilaj Al Jazayer, marks a major step forward in the country's shift toward renewable energy and environmental sustainability.
The solar plant is being developed in partnership with the private sector as part of Bahrain's national initiatives to reduce carbon emissions and achieve net-zero carbon neutrality by 2060.
EWA President His Excellency Eng. Kamal bin Ahmed Mohammed emphasized the importance of the project, describing it as one of the authority's key strategic efforts. 'This project reflects our commitment to expanding Bahrain's sustainable energy framework,' he said. 'By working with private sector partners, we aim to enhance our renewable energy production and strengthen the Kingdom's energy security.'
As part of the development process, EWA will launch a Global Market Sounding initiative on August 14, aimed at gathering interest from both local and international developers. This step will help guide the project's tendering process, expected to open in the fourth quarter of this year. Interested parties are encouraged to express their interest by contacting project@
The plant will cover an area of 1.2 square kilometers and will use advanced solar technologies. A consortium of consulting firms has been appointed to oversee the project, including KPMG Fakhro as the financial advisor, WSP-Parsons Brinckerhoff as the technical consultant, and Trowers & Hamlins as the legal advisor.
The solar power station is a flagship project under Bahrain's National Renewable Energy Plan, which aims to raise the share of clean energy in the national energy mix to 20% by 2035.
Once operational, the plant is expected to generate enough electricity to power around 6,300 homes, while also cutting down over 100,000 tons of carbon emissions annually — a significant contribution to the Kingdom's environmental goals.
