Lewis Shipley strikes late to give Barrow the spoils against Notts County

Defender Shipley slid in his first goal for the club eight minutes after ex-Carlisle striker Dennis levelled for the unlucky visitors. Former Nottingham Forest striker Tyler Walker had netted the Cumbrians' first goal of the season after 32 minutes, his own first goal in the Football League since March 2023. County dominated possession in the second half but suffered a blow when substitute Matty Platt suffered a late game-ending injury. And having used their three substitute windows, County were unable to bring on their final replacement. However, Dennis, who scored for Carlisle against Barrow, appeared to have rescued a deserved point, heading home Nick Tsaroulla's cross. Instead, Barrow, who have not lost a Football League game against the Magpies since 1970, poured forward and Shipley prodded in a memorable winner.

Hughes: How Carlisle United will tackle Motherwell friendly today

Mark Hughes anticipates a 'good test' when Carlisle United take on Motherwell in their first pre-season friendly today. The Blues head to Fir Park for a behind-closed-doors game against Jens Berthel Askou's Scottish Premiership side. Advertisement It will be a first opportunity to give outings to some of Carlisle's summer signings - and a first game for United since last season's relegation. The contest north of the border will see the Cumbrians go up against a Scottish top-flight side who are preparing for a return to competitive action later this week. Hughes said: 'I think they [Motherwell] have been back two weeks, and they've already had games as well. 'I'm looking forward to it because it's a good test for us. 'You don't mind that. You'll get some odd, strange results in pre-season. You always get that. That's usually down to the fact that teams have come back sooner or later when they go up against each other. Advertisement Hughes on midfield transfer plan, Harris latest and pre-season 'niggles' 'You don't quite do the same type of work because you haven't got the information in terms of, sometimes, personnel or set plays. 'They're working on different things. We're working on different things. It's difficult to prepare, really. 'It's just about getting the guys game time, really – get minutes on the board and then you start building more closely in terms of the detail at the end of the pre-season period.' The game could see United striker Luke Armstrong come up against the club where he spent half a season on loan last term. Hughes said he intends to give players 45 minutes each in United's first outing of their preparations for the 2025/26 National League season. 'We'll do a couple of 45s, flip teams and what have you,' the head coach added. 'Then we've got 60-30s, and all those ratios leading up to giving guys 90 minutes and making sure everybody's up to speed.' Advertisement Certain players who have been nursing pre-season injury 'niggles' could miss out today, with Morgan Feeney and Stephen Wearne among those who may not be risked. Other than Feeney, fellow new signings including Regan Linney, David Ajiboye, Junior Luamba and Sam Murray could get their first taste of action in a United shirt since their summer moves. Hughes, meanwhile, has played down the prospect of a trialist being involved in the game. Motherwell recently returned from a training camp in the Netherlands, which included a 3-0 defeat to FC Twente. Their first competitive game of the 2025/26 campaign comes on Saturday when they face Clyde in the Premier Sports Cup. Advertisement Today's game is due to kick off at 3pm. The News & Star has been informed that the game is not open to the media. Jack Butland warned Rangers transfer needle hasn't shifted on new keeper as Russell Martin reveals ideal scenario

Butland is rediscovering his mojo after being dropped last season but new boss hasn't ruled out further competition between the sticks Russell Martin reckons Jack Butland has rediscovered his missing mojo - but hasn't ruled out signing another keeper to challenge the Ibrox No1. Former England stopper Butland was a major success in his first campaign with the club but saw his form crash last term with a string of high-profile howlers. ‌ The 31-year-old's dramatic drop off eventually led to him being dropped by interim gaffer Barry Ferguson, with Liam Kelly handed the gloves for the final few weeks of the season. ‌ Martin is now the man in charge at Ibrox and faces a huge call next week when he must decide which of the two he starts in goal for the club's crucial Champions League qualifier with Panathinaikos. But the new Rangers boss admits he could yet look else to fill the slot between the sticks amid rumours he's weighing up a loan move for 24-year-old Brighton goalkeeper Carl Rushworth. He said: 'I think you need to have two good goalkeepers, ideally three at a club like this. So I think it's the same as any position. We'll keep assessing what they can do, what they can't do. 'We have two good goalkeepers, we're fortunate with that. But if there's someone who's desperate to play here and we think can help us, it's the same at any position - as long as it doesn't affect other things in the balance of the squad, then we'll always look to it. 'But at the minute I've been happy with them two guys.' ‌ Butland started Saturday's closed-door friendly against Barnsley at St George's Park in Burton, keeping a clean sheet during his 60-minute run-out in the 1-1 draw. And Martin has liked what he's seen from the former Stoke, Crystal Palace and Manchester United shot-stopper. He said: 'I wasn't here before, so I can't tell you where he was and where he is now. ‌ "What I've seen is a guy that really believes in himself, has made some outstanding saves in training, is willing to do the stuff we're asking him to do with the ball to his feet, as is Liam. "So they've been great, both of them.' Martin has beefed up his backroom appointment with the addition of former Arsenal goalie coach Salvatore Bibbo and ex-Carlisle boss Mike Williamson, who has been appointed first team coach at Rangers. ‌ He said: 'I'm really happy to have both guys on board. 'I think a lot of challenge, a lot of honesty, a lot of skills with the people we've brought in, different skill sets. ‌ 'I think Mike's going to primarily focus on set-pieces, and the transition side of the game, and really focus on that, and nail that down. He's someone who I've known and trusted for a very, very long time. 'But he's also been a manager, so he understands. We'll be at a different level, but I think once you've been a manager, you have an understanding of what it takes. 'And we're aligned in a lot of things, in terms of values, standards, but also think very differently. 'Mike's very different to most people I've met in football, so I think he was an important one for us. So I'm really glad the club have supported us with that. 'And Sal's just come with a fantastic reputation. Every goalkeeper he's worked with, I've spoke to a lot actually, and a lot of people, staff members he's worked with. 'And in football it's hard to get everyone to say you're a good person, good at your job, but everyone did without him. So I've been delighted with what I've seen from Sal already.'
