Adam Simpson: Former West Coast coach rules himself out of Melbourne coaching race
Adam Simpson has ruled himself out of contention for Melbourne's coaching job, declaring he was 'not in the right headspace' to put his hand up for the role. It comes as Simpson revealed the Demons had not yet contacted him to seek out his interest in becoming coach in the wake of Simon Goodwin's dismissal last week. Simpson had been considered among the frontrunners to step into the top job at Melbourne, along with fellow premiership coach John Longmire. But the pair have now both removed themselves from contention. 'I don't want to coach next year,' Simpson said on SEN. 'I think I'll give it a spell. 'I was thinking through it over the weekend, and I know 'Horse' (Longmire) has done the same thing. 'It just doesn't feel like it's the right time to be available.' Melbourne made their sacking call on Goodwin last Monday, but a week later, Simpson said he had yet to hear from anyone at the club, saying: 'They haven't called me.' 'And sometimes you wait for these things because you might think, 'I'm not interested', but then you get the phone call and you go, 'Oh hang on, now I'm wanted', and then you sort of pivot in a different way,' Simpson said. 'But I've had a good think about it and I'm just not in the right headspace with it. I'm enjoying all this (media work).' The 2018 Eagles premiership coach said he had realised over the weekend that his passion and preparation to potentially take on the role was not where it needed to be. 'The passion to go through all the process... because once you get approached, it's turbo, and you need to really be prepared. I'm not really prepared and not in the right headspace,' he said. Longmire and Simpson's decisions leave ex-Collingwood coach Nathan Buckley and outgoing Port Adelaide coach Ken Hinkley as the leading candidates for Melbourne who boast significant experience in the top role, while untried assistants such as Hayden Skipworth and Daniel Giansiracusa are also in the mix.

Jack Ginnivan makes ‘complicated' admission after kicking another two goals since AFL return
Hawthorn forward Jack Ginnivan says it was 'good to go back' to the VFL for a week and refresh his mind before bouncing back since his AFL recall. The 22-year-old was goalless in four out of five games to start the year and dropped for the Hawks' Easter Monday clash with Geelong. Swapping the big MCG stage for Kardinia Park, he kicked four goals for Box Hill and was immediately brought back into a winning Hawthorn side. Two goals helped put West Coast to the sword last week before he kicked another two in a 65-point victory over Richmond on Sunday. 'I just had a few sighters early and lucky enough to put the next two through,' Ginnivan told Triple M in the rooms afterwards. He said the VFL reset was '100 per cent' what he needed, pinpointing his reunion with ex-Collingwood teammate Trent Bianco as a motivating factor. 'I obviously wasn't playing my best footy,' Ginnivan said. 'AFL's a hard game and sometimes you really make it too complicated from the head up. 'It was good to just go back, kick a few goals, play with one of my best mates Trent Bianco and then come back into the side and just be a really confident player again and show my flair. I think I'm doing that the last two weeks.' While the scoreboard was the highlight, Ginnivan's work outside Hawthorn's forward 50 didn't go unnoticed. He had a career-high nine marks and equalled his second-best disposal count (23) to be an important link man in the Hawks' attack. 'I've really tried to get in good shape,' Ginnivan said. 'When you're standing next to Dylan Moore and Connor Macdonald, who run a six-minute 2km, you've really got to make sure you're close enough to them. 'It's something I've really worked on ... at Collingwood I probably didn't work as hard, just used to like to kick them out the back. 'Now I'm really working hard and getting on the end of a few hard ones, not easy ones.'

Melbourne set to hire Victorian business chief Paul Guerra as new CEO to replace Gary Pert
Melbourne are set to hire Victorian business chief Paul Guerra as their new CEO, six months Gary Pert announced his resignation. According to The Agenda Setters' Caroline Wilson, Guerra will cross to the Demons from the Victorian Chamber of Commerce and Industry, a major Victorian business advocacy organisation, where he is its current chief executive. Breaking the story on 7NEWS, Wilson said the Melbourne board was still meeting to make the final call. 'The Melbourne board is still meeting as we speak, but my prediction is that an outsider in the role, Paul Guerra, the CEO of the Melbourne Chamber of Commerce, is the frontrunner in the board meeting,' she said. 'Alistair Nicholson presented very well, the former Melbourne player who now runs the Coaches' Association, but my tip is that Paul Guerra will win the role, an Essendon man who will change his colours.' Guerra is set to win the role ahead of a pair of names more well-known to footy circles. 'The AFL and other people in the footy industry were quite keen on Keith Thomas, the former Port Adelaide CEO and Norwood player, who did a great job at the Port Adelaide Football Club — he stepped down from that role in 2020,' Wilson added. 'My understand is that, controversially, some positions, political positions, involving war in the middle-east that appeared on Keith Thomas's social media meant that he had to withdraw from the candidacy. 'I think it's a great pity because many people thought he would be a great candidate, but Melbourne were spooked, and so he's no longer in the running.' Pert's decision, which was made in October, also came less than two months after Kate Roffey stood down as president, the pair departing just three years after leading the club to the 2021 premiership. Speaking at the time, interim president Brad Green — who remains in the temporary seat now — said it he felt 'mixed emotions' that Pert would retire. 'After careful consideration of what is best for the club, his family, and his own future, Gary concluded that now is the right time to initiate the search for his successor,' Green said in a club statement last October. 'I want to make it absolutely clear that this decision, including its timing, is Gary's own.' Pert, an ex-Collingwood CEO, had positioned himself as the only man to deliver Melbourne's Caulfield development and has accepted a consulting role for the remainder of the project. His resignation as chief executive came after a review into the club's operations was handed to the board. Pert was also involved in trade negotiations at the end of last season, reportedly contacting other clubs to gauge their interest in Clayton Oliver before the star midfielder ultimately stayed.
