Sahibabad market violence: Trader held over remarks against woman

Ghaziabad: The Ghaziabad police have arrested Bijender Yadav, a trader at Sahibabad vegetable market, for allegedly making insulting remarks against a woman, the wife of a government officer, said officials on Wednesday. A spokesperson of the Congress' city unit has said that trader Yadav is not holding any party responsibility as of now. (HT Photos (Video grab)) On August 14, Yadav, along with 100-150 unidentified people, was booked in an FIR registered at the Link Road police station under the BNS sections for insulting the modesty of a woman, intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of peace, criminal intimidation, and threats that cause fear of death, grievous hurt, destruction of property by fire, or other serious offenses. 'Yadav, named in the FIR, was arrested on Tuesday under section 151 of Bharatiya Nagrik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) (to prevent the commission of cognizable offences). The FIR was lodged by the woman. However, even after a lot of persuasion, she or her husband has not come to the police to provide their statements so far. An investigation is underway,' said assistant commissioner of police (Sahibabad circle) Shweta Yadav. The woman alleged in her FIR that Yadav allegedly gave a speech to the Sahibabad vegetable market traders on August 11, and also passed insulting remarks against her and her husband. The incidents later took an ugly turn, and a group of men allegedly opened fire at traders, leaving two men injured. Several purported videos of the speech, firing and violence also went viral on the social media. Later, eight suspects of a group were arrested on August 11 evening for rioting, attempted murder, and violence. Earlier, Yadav, who is also ex-Congress district president, told HT that due to traders' harassment he had made the remarks. A spokesperson of the Congress' city unit said that Yadav is not holding any party responsibility as of now.

Anurag Thakur ‘proved' fake voter list charge, says Congress; BJP hits back

A day after former Union minister Minister Anurag Thakur alleged irregularities in voter registration in a number of LS seats held by Opposition leaders and accused them of 'vote theft', Congress Thursday said it 'proves' the 2024 LS polls were 'based on a fake voter list'. Questioning the EC for not serving a notice to Thakur, as it did in Lok Sabha LoP Rahul Gandhi's case, AICC Media and Publicity Department Chairman Pawan Khera said, 'We demand that the evidence presented by Anurag Thakur be handed over to us. He has proven there is collusion between BJP and the EC,' he said. Khera said that Thakur's analysis 'proves that the previous LS election (in 2024) was based on a fake voter list, so shouldn't it be considered fraudulent and cancelled?… We thank Anurag Thakur and the BJP for proving the point made by Rahul Gandhi ji that the elections are fought on the basis of fake voters'. Hitting back, Union Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat claimed that Congress's history is replete with instances when it resorted to 'fraud, deception and deceit' in its 'greed' for power. Reiterating BJP national IT cell chief Amit Malviya's allegation against ex-Congress chief Sonia Gandhi that 'her name first appeared on the rolls in 1980, three years before she became an Indian citizen', Shekhawat accused the Gandhi family 'which has stolen mandates, looted booths, rejected votes to change outcomes, and deprived voters of their right to vote' of making 'baseless claims to portray itself as the saviour of democracy'. He said Sonia Gandhi 'being a voter in 1980 amounted to challenging India's sovereignty and showing contempt for the constitutional process'.

Voter's list row: Congress' Sonia Gandhi's name added to voter list before she was citizen? BJP alleges so

Voter's list row: Congress' Sonia Gandhi's name added to voter list before she was citizen? BJP alleges so The Bharatiya Janata Party on Wednesday launched a counterattack on Congress and claimed Sonia Gandhi had been illegally added to the voter list 45 years ago, before she was an Indian citizen. The Congress has accused the BJP of 'colluding' with the Election Commission to commit voter fraud. Ex-Union Minister Anurag Thakur claimed ex-Congress boss – born Sonia Maino in Italy in 1946 – was added on the list from 1980 to 1982, a year before she was an Indian citizen. In a long Twitter post, BJP leader Amit Malviya claimed that Sonia Gandhi's name first appeared on the rolls in 1980 — three years before she became an Indian citizen and while she still held Italian citizenship. The post read: Sonia Gandhi's tryst with India's voters' list is riddled with glaring violations of electoral law. This perhaps explains Rahul Gandhi's fondness for regularising ineligible and illegal voters, and his opposition to the Special Intensive Revision (SIR). Her name first appeared on the rolls in 1980 — three years before she became an Indian citizen and while she still held Italian citizenship. At the time, the Gandhi family lived at 1, Safdarjung Road, the official residence of Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. Until then, the voters registered at that address were Indira Gandhi, Rajiv Gandhi, Sanjay Gandhi, and Maneka Gandhi. In 1980, the electoral rolls of the New Delhi parliamentary constituency were revised with January 1, 1980, as the qualifying date. During this revision, Sonia Gandhi's name was added, appearing at serial number 388 in polling station 145. This entry was a clear violation of the law, which requires a person to be an Indian citizen to be registered as a voter. Following an outcry in 1982, her name was deleted from the list — only to reappear in 1983. But even her reinstatement raised serious questions. In the fresh revision of the electoral rolls that year, Sonia Gandhi was listed at serial number 236 in polling station 140. The qualifying date for registration was January 1, 1983 — yet she was granted Indian citizenship only on April 30, 1983. In other words, Sonia Gandhi's name entered the electoral rolls twice without meeting the basic citizenship requirement — first as an Italian citizen in 1980, and then again in 1983, months before she legally became a citizen of India. We are not even asking why it took her 15 years after marrying Rajiv Gandhi to accept Indian citizenship. If this isn't blatant electoral malpractice, what is? What the Opposition is alleging? Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, also made explosive claims of a 'huge criminal fraud' in polls through collusion between the BJP and the Election Commission. Alleging that a 'vote chori model' was being used in many constituencies across the country, Gandhi said that the judiciary needs to get involved in this because 'the democracy that we love so much, does not exist anymore'.

ED arguments over in Herald case, it's Gandhis' turn now

Sonia and Rahul Gandhi NEW DELHI: The Enforcement Directorate (ED) claimed before a Delhi court on Thursday that the National Herald case is a "classic case of money laundering". Young Indian Pvt Ltd, in which ex-Congress presidents Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi held a 76% stake, was allegedly created to launder Rs 2,000 crore from Associated Journals Ltd, the company that published 'National Herald' newspaper. "This is a classic case where the offence of money laundering is made against all the accused," submitted additional solicitor general SV Raju, appearing for the ED before the court of special judge Vishal Gogne. He asked the court to take cognisance of the chargesheet. The court was hearing arguments on the point of cognisance of the chargesheet filed against Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi in the money laundering case. The agency concluded its arguments in the case on Thursday. Senior advocate Abhishek Manu Singhvi will make submissions before the court on Friday, appearing for Sonia Gandhi. The ED, through the ASG, submitted that Sonia and Rahul Gandhi were beneficial owners and in ultimate control of Young Indian, and that after the deaths of other shareholders they had 100% control. "These two persons controlled the All India Congress Committee. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Trending in in 2025: Local network access control [Click Here] Esseps Learn More Undo They saw that AICC released a Rs 90 crore loan to Associated Journals Limited, or AJL, a Rs 2,000 crore company, the publisher of National Herald newspaper. The purpose was to have Rs 2,000 crore," Raju told the court. Raju claimed Sonia and Rahul Gandhi were responsible for the conduct of business of Young Indian and the fraudulent takeover of properties valued at over Rs 2,000 crore of AJL was with their connivance and consent. The ASG alleged that the shareholding in the venture was just in name and that all the other accused were puppets of the Gandhi family. He added that Sonia and Rahul Gandhi control Congress and wanted to get hold of Rs 2,000 crore instead of the said Rs 92 crore. As per the ED, Congress provided an interest-free loan of Rs 90 crore to AJL, which had assets worth Rs 2,000 crore, for a consideration of just Rs 50 lakh. This debt was allegedly converted into equity in YI's favour. "They deprived AJL's shareholders of their right. YI invested just Rs 50 lakh and got Rs 2,000 crore. YI gained wrongfully and shareholders suffered," he said. The court asked Raju if the shareholders are also witnesses in this case. Calling the matter a little peculiar, the judge asked whether they should not also be made witnesses. "The ED has not investigated the 1,000 shareholders. So will this trial go on without them being witnesses," the court asked. The ASG replied, "The record speaks for itself. This is a classic case of money laundering. The real culprits are these seven persons (including Sonia and Rahul), once you pierce the veil. Today, Sonia and Rahul Gandhi hold almost all shares. They're the beneficial owners of the company."
