Prince William reportedly planning to strip Meghan Markle and Prince Harry's titles after latest HRH furore
A source inside Buckingham Palace has claimed an incensed Prince William will be taking dramatic action to remove the Sussexes' HRH titles for good when he becomes monarch. The Duchess of Sussex raised eyebrows earlier this week after using her former 'HRH' title on a gift card, in direct breach of an agreement made with the late Queen Elizabeth II before her death. Markle's defiance marked a brazen contradiction of the 2020 Sandringham Summit, where it was agreed that Harry and Meghan would no longer use their HRH prefixes after leaving royal duties. "The Sussexes will not use their HRH titles as they are no longer working members of the Royal Family," an official statement from Her Majesty the Queen, dated January 18, 2020 said. A His/Her Royal Highness designation is traditionally only granted to blood-born royals and their spouses who carry out royal engagements on behalf of the crown. The monarchy also insisted on removing both Princess Diana and Sarah Ferguson's HRH titles when they divorced from the royal family. It is understood part of the reason for the removal was to prevent an HRH from appearing mercenary or using the honour for personal financial gain. Markle's gift card was the second recent occasion in which the ex-Suits actress used her HRH title on social media. Last week, Markle posted a letter she received from war-torn Ukraine's vice president referring to Meghan as 'Her Royal Highness'. According to the Daily Beast, Meghan's flagrant use of the HRH title has infuriated the Prince of Wales, who feels King Charles has been too lenient with the Sussexes. 'Charles has completely lost control,' the source close to the Prince of Wales said. 'It's apparent that Harry and Meghan have every intention of making his final years a misery, just as he feared they would. 'Meghan using her HRH exposes how weak and enfeebled he is. She knows he won't do anything.' The friend also confirmed that officially stripping the couple of their HRH title would be a top priority when William ascends the throne. 'There is no way King William will stand for this,' the source said. 'The titles will simply be removed when he is King. A way will be found.'
