O'Hara hits out at ex-USWNT boss Andonovski: 'I didn't learn anything'
O'Hara hits out at ex-USWNT boss Andonovski: 'I didn't learn anything' Show Caption Hide Caption Megan Rapinoe on what Coach Emma Hayes brings to the USWNT Megan Rapinoe explains why she's all in on Coach Emma Hayes and what she brings to the U.S. Women's National Team. Sports Seriously Kelley O'Hara has taken aim at former U.S. women's national team head coach Vlatko Andonovski, saying she didn't learn anything new during his tenure. Andonovski stepped down shortly after a disappointing round-of-16 exit in the 2023 World Cup, the earliest that the USWNT has ever exited the tournament. The coach fell short of expectations during his time at the helm of the USWNT, also underperforming in 2021 at the Olympics as the U.S. won a bronze medal. Emma Hayes came in as his replacement, immediately guiding the USWNT to a gold medal at the Olympics last summer. Andonovski, meanwhile, has returned to the NWSL where he's turned the Kansas City Current into one of the league's best teams over the past year. O'Hara, who retired last year after an illustrious career, admitted that she wasn't fully satisfied having Andonovski as her national team coach — and she wasn't the only one. 'I don't feel like I learned anything new from Vlatko,' O'Hara said on the "Sports Are Fun!" podcast. 'Actually post-having him as a coach I was like, 'Wow, is that on me? Did I stop learning or did he not coach me or teach me something?' 'I had conversations with other players about it and they were like, 'No, no, no, that was on him.' 'I was like, I want to be coached. As a player, yes, you become the type of player you are but you're never perfect," she added. "You're always trying to strive for excellence. But to me, until the day that I left football, I was like, 'I can always get better. There's always room for improvement here.'" O'Hara is among the most decorated USWNT players of all time, earning 160 caps in her national team career. Along with being a key part of the 2015 and 2019 World Cup-winning USWNT sides (including a vital goal in a 2015 semifinal win over Germany), O'Hara won an Olympic gold medal in 2012.
