Latest on new Swindon sports park replicating Birmingham 'play zone'

A new Swindon sports park has officially opened to the public, six weeks ahead of schedule. The Buckhurst Field play zone is part of £600,000 improvement works in the area which were first announced in June 2024 by South Swindon Parish Council. Plans for the Walcot play zone were given the green light in August 2024 and now, almost one year on, it's available for use. The play zone was originally predicted to open in mid September, after South Swindon Parish Council was told the building work would take 12 weeks to complete. However, eager to get the site up and running in time for the school holidays, the council has worked to get the sports facility built in just six weeks. Local councillors Jamal Miah and Steve Allsopp visited the court to celebrate the opening, and speak to the young people who are going to benefit from it. "All were very positive about the benefits of the new facility," said a spokesperson for South Swindon Parish Council. "The Playzone will operate as a bookable facility but as a treat for young people, we will keep the court completely free to use during the summer holidays with the court gate remaining open. "There remains some work to complete with the tarmac needing to still set before the line markings are introduced to the court and CCTV is being installed. "Line markings will be added within the next four weeks and CCTV is set to be installed at the beginning of August." The parish council says it hopes the facility, which has been modelled off a similar play zone in Birmingham, will encourage more women and under-represented communities in sport to get active. The £600,000 Buckhurst Field improvement project, of which this play zone is a part, also marks South Swindon Parish's largest-ever investment into recreation facilities in the town. Other works included in the project, such as the rebuilt skate park, refurbished sports pavilion and tarmacked car park, have already been completed. Reacting to the new play zone, one Swindon resident said: "This is a great facility and has been an important space for local kids, especially during the weekends and holidays." Another added: "Great to see facilities for kids being built! Well done South Swindon Parish Council."

St. John's morgue octuples its storage capacity with new facility

New Ron Johnson doesn't believe unclaimed bodies will be problem again Newfoundland and Labrador has vastly increased the number of bodies it can store in a new morgue facility in St. John's, say health authority officials. Daniel Parsons, senior director of provincial capital planning and engineering with Newfoundland and Labrador Health Services, said this new facility consists of two fridge units and two freezer units, which is located off a hallway in the parking garage of the Janeway Children's Hospital. He said the original morgue facility was constructed in the 1970s and had a capacity of 12 bodies. The new facility can store 96 bodies. "What we've done here is significantly increased our capacity," he told reporters on Friday during a tour of the facility. Ron Johnson, chief operating officer of the health authority's eastern-urban zone, said having this expanded facility is a boon, including for those who work there, but it's also a matter of "perception." "We wanted to ensure that … people's bodies and families and others were dealt with in a very professional way. In a very caring way and empathetic way," said Johnson. "So I think this new facility does that." Johnson said the new facility came online in early June. Corey Murray, senior director of pathology and laboratory medicine, said the new space is ergonomically designed and is safer for staff. "The older space again was very confined. We had a very limited capacity. So it was difficult at times to be retrieving a decedent, either for the funeral home or for autopsy services," said Murray. Unclaimed bodies won't 'pile up' CBC News first reported 28 bodies were being stored in freezer units outside of the Health Sciences Centre in St. John's due to a lack of space in the morgue in March 2024. The morgue doubles as the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner. The freezers were later relocated to the hospital parking garage — where the new, expanded morgue has been constructed. The provincial government amended legislation, which was filed on Dec. 24 and came into effect on Jan. 1, that empowered the health authority to bury unclaimed remains after two weeks of searching for next of kin and then five days after the identity of the person is posted online on a dedicated website. Between legislation and the expanded facility, Johnson said he doesn't anticipate they will have to tackle a growing number of unclaimed remains again. However, he said there may be other reasons they would need more storage, like a "mass event" that causes numerous deaths.

Council denies failure over wait for mainland recycling facility

A city's recycling waste is still being taken over 400 miles away to be sorted even though residents were told that a facility would open closer to recycling waste has been transported to Newry in Northern Ireland since March by waste management firm Re-Gen after it won a contract with the city council and Cambridgeshire District Council in a press release from Cambridge City Council in February said the firm had plans to open a materials recovery facility on the UK mainland "within the first half of this year."In a full council meeting on Thursday, Green Party councillor Jean Glasberg said there were "still no signs that a new UK mainland MRF has been acquired by Re-Gen, or that such an acquisition is due to take place". She asked what steps had been taken to "investigate this apparent failure", according to the Local Democracy Reporting councillor Rosy Moore, cabinet member for climate action and environment, said there had been no "failure" as the contract had been awarded based on the Newry facility, and that the plans to acquire a mainland facility had only been made known added that Re-Gen had offered the best option in terms of cost and quality of the Moore said that Re-Gen was still continuing to pursue acquiring a UK mainland MRF, but said she did not currently have an update on this facility added that the reference to the facility opening in the first half of this year actually referred to the first half of the contract year, which she said had started in March.
