Iberia Parish Memorial Day Remembrance Program

IBERIA PARISH, La. () — Holding its annual Memorial Day Ceremony, the Iberia Veterans Association honors fallen soldiers in Downtown New Iberia. Percy Barrilleaux, an Army Veteran and President of the Iberia Veterans Association, says this is necessary to remind people the difference between Veterans Day and Memorial Day. 'A lot of people mistake Veterans Day and Memorial Day,' explained Barrilleaux. 'Veterans Day is more for us that is still living, but Memorial is for those that are gone.' Remembering soldiers who made the sacrifice to protect our freedoms, New Iberia Mayor Freddie Decourt shared with people the number of fallen New Iberia servicemen and women. A proud Army Veteran, Iberia Parish President Larry Richard continues the memorial program by reminding everyone of the real reason they are there to celebrate. 'Memorial Day is a time of reflection, a moment to recognize the true cost of freedom and to remember those who gave everything for the second,' Richard said. Trump Couldn't Resist Shading Biden in Solemn Memorial Day Speech

President Donald Trump couldn't get Joe Biden off his mind on Memorial Day. The president took a veiled swipe at his predecessor while delivering an otherwise solemn speech honoring fallen soldiers, just hours after he launched a fresh Truth Social tirade against Biden. Trump opened his remarks at the Arlington National Cemetery with a tribute to the servicemen laid to rest there, but things quickly took a turn. 'Those young men could never have known what their sacrifice would mean to us, but we certainly know what we owe to them,' he said. 'Their valor gave us the freest, greatest, and most noble republic ever to exist on the face of the Earth, a republic that I am fixing after a long and hard four years. That was a hard four years we went through.' The crowd broke into applause as Trump went on—but even he seemed to acknowledge that it wasn't the right time to hash out old grievances. 'Who would let that happen? People pouring through our borders unchecked, people doing things that are indescribable and not for today to discuss,' he said. 'We're doing so very well right now, considering the circumstances… We will do better than we've ever done as a nation, better than ever before. I promise you that.' Trump's brief segue into politics in the middle of his speech appeared to be a continuation of his early Monday morning post on Truth Social, where he fumed at Biden and the judiciary in an all-caps rant. 'HAPPY MEMORIAL DAY TO ALL, INCLUDING THE SCUM THAT SPENT THE LAST FOUR YEARS TRYING TO DESTROY OUR COUNTRY… THROUGH AN OPEN BORDER THAT ONLY AN INCOMPETENT PRESIDENT WOULD APPROVE,' he wrote. Biden's office did not immediately respond to a request for comment from The Daily Beast. Trump also accused 'USA-hating' judges, many of whom have blocked the implementation of his sweeping agenda, of being 'on a mission' to keep alleged criminals in the U.S. 'HOPEFULLY THE UNITED STATES SUPREME COURT, AND OTHER GOOD AND COMPASSIONATE JUDGES THROUGHOUT THE LAND, WILL SAVE US FROM THE DECISIONS OF THE MONSTERS WHO WANT OUR COUNTRY TO GO TO HELL,' he said. Trump used his speech to tout a multimillion-dollar military parade honoring the Army's 250th anniversary, which is set for his birthday next month. 'In some ways, I'm glad I missed that second term where it was because I wouldn't be your president for that,' he said, drawing laughter from the audience. 'Can you imagine I missed that four years, and now look what I have. I have everything. Amazing the way things work out. God did that.'

'Every day is Memorial Day for any veteran that has gone through any type of War.'

MIDLAND, Texas (KMID/KPEJ)- Today, May 26th is Memorial Day. A day of remembrance for the fallen soldiers who lost their lives in battle. Thousands of soldiers and their families have paid the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom. This day is dedicated to honoring their legacy. Many local Veterans said their thoughts on what Memorial Day means to them. 'This is Memorial Day, it's the one like I said that didn't come home. We've all got somebody that's been like that or didn't come home, or know somebody anyway.''It's time to celebrate all the fallen warriors and just everybody come together all the veterans come together and celebrate.''It's really a day to remember the ones that gave the ultimate sacrifice. But every day is a Memorial Day for any veteran that has gone through any type of War.''Remembering all of our conrads and those who came before us that paid the ultimate price for our freedom.' This Holiday was first called 'Decoration Day' and celebrated on May 30th, but in 1967 the name was changed to Memorial Day, and the Uniform Monday Holiday Act established the date change to the last Monday to create a three-day weekend for federal employees. 'It started in the 1800s,' Robert Thames Commander at Post 7208 said. 'It was started by widow women, whose husbands got killed in the Civil War. So, they started making roses, and crosses for the graves.' Army Staff Sergeant Bradley Bishop reminds everyone to never forget about the sacrifice many soldiers have made so you can enjoy time with your family today.'Spend it with family, spend it with friends,' Staff Sergeant Bishop said. 'Just remember whenever you are having the barbeque and you are spending the time with your family, families without that one person that gave the ultimate sacrifice.' The U.S Military has approximately 1.328 million active duty personnel across all branches: the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard. There are a lot of men and women fighting for our us and our freedom. It is important to honor them and everyone who has fallen. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Sullivan County remembers fallen soldiers at Memorial Day event

BLOUNTVILLE, Tenn. (WJHL) – For decades, thousands of Americans have fought to protect our nation's freedom, but not all made it home. 'It's not about us veterans who are home,' said Todd McKinley, an Army veteran and member of the Sullivan County school board. 'This is for those who didn't make it home.' In Sullivan County, dozens gathered on Monday to honor those lost during military service. McKinley said he was touched by the crowd. 'You had some elected officials show up, which is part of their duty,' he said. 'But at the same time, you had just regular civilians and veterans showing up just to pay homage and pay their respects.' The keynote speech was given by retired Marine and Kingsport Chamber President Miles Burdine. County Commissioner and Navy veteran Gary Stidham said he invited Burdine to speak on behalf of those who did make it home. 'One of those veterans out there that is on an island by themselves, now know that they're not on that island by themselves,' he said. 'And it may get them to seek help for their personal PTSD.' Burdine said the service was a true tribute to fallen soldiers. 'The singing of the national anthem, the gun salute, the taps,' he said. 'All of it is meant to remember those who gave it all.' For the three men, it's important to remember the reason behind Memorial Day. 'We are honoring and remembering those who fell in battle so that our families could enjoy today,' Burdine said. 'Could go to the beach, to have the freedom to enjoy a picnic, to enjoy the freedom to have a barbecue.' 'A lot of blood was shed for us to be able to be free, to stay free,' Stidham said. 'But if they would just take a moment and just say a little prayer for those families that have lost, I think that would be significant enough.' The ceremony was held at Sullivan County Veterans Park, which opened in November 2024. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
