Ukraine says repatriation of war dead over after 1,245 more bodies received from Russia

KYIV, June 16 (Reuters) - Ukraine received another 1,245 bodies of its soldiers killed in the war with Russia on Monday in the final stage of the repatriation of remains agreed at talks in Istanbul, Ukrainian officials said. "Today marks the final stage of the repatriation of fallen soldiers," Defence Minister Rustem Umerov said. "Since last week, when the implementation of the Istanbul agreements began, we have managed to bring back over 6,000 bodies." This marks one of the largest returns of war dead since Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine more than three years ago. The handover of the soldiers' remains is part of the agreements reached between Russia and Ukraine during their second round of talks in Istanbul at the start of the month. Kremlin aide Vladimir Medinsky, the head of Russia's delegation at the peace talks, said that Moscow had handed back the bodies of 6,060 Ukrainian servicemen. He said that Russia has received the remains of 78 of its own soldiers in return. Ukrainian officials said that they had received 6,057 bodies. They was no immediate explanation available on the discrepancy in numbers. The Russian Defence ministry said that Moscow was ready to hand over another 2,239 bodies to Ukraine. Both Ukraine and Russia said that the process of exchanging prisoners of war was still ongoing. "We are not stopping. Ahead lies the next stage: we continue the fight to bring back our prisoners of war," Ukrainian Defence Minister Umerov said in a social media post on Facebook. The agreements on exchanging POWs were the only concrete result during the talks between Kyiv and Moscow in Istanbul. Both sides remain far apart in their vision on how to end the war, and they also failed to agree on a ceasefire.

Ukraine war briefing: Kyiv repatriates more bodies of fallen soldiers amid major exchange with Russia

Ukraine has repatriated more bodies of fallen soldiers in accordance with an agreement reached during peace talks in Istanbul, Ukrainian officials said Friday. Ukraine's Coordination Headquarters for the Treatment of Prisoners of War said Russia had returned 1,200 bodies, and 'according to the Russian side, the bodies belong to Ukrainian citizens, in particular military personnel'. The repatriation of the bodies was carried out with the help of Ukraine's armed forces, the country's security service, the interior ministry and other government agencies, its statement said. Forensic experts would now work to identify the remains. The repatriation marks one of the war's largest returns of remains. Russia says its forces have captured another village in Ukraine's north-eastern Sumy region amid its ramped-up offensive there. Moscow's defence ministry said on Friday it had taken control of the village of Yablunivka, about 9km (five miles) from the Russian border. Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelenskyy has said Ukrainian forces are 'gradually pushing back the occupiers' in the border region but prevailing assessments have shown Russian gains. Russia's defence ministry said Russian forces had also taken control of two other Ukrainian villages – Koptevo and Komar in the eastern Donetsk region, Russia's Tass news agency reported. The ministry said Russian troops had captured six Ukrainian villages over the past week. The battlefield reports could not be independently verified. A 73-year-old American jailed by Russia as a mercenary for Ukraine protested his innocence when his US-based legal team and family finally tracked him down in April, months after he vanished into the vast Russian prison system, they said. Stephen Hubbard, a retired schoolteacher, was sentenced last October to almost seven years in a penal colony and Russian state media reported that he had entered a guilty plea in the closed-door trial. His US-based lawyer, who made his first public comments on the case to the New York Times this week, said: 'The first thing Hubbard wanted to talk about when he was able to make contact with the outside world was: 'It's not true.'' US officials have requested his immediate release. Ukraine's air force said on Friday that Russia fired 55 Shahed and decoy drones and four ballistic missiles at Ukraine overnight. The air force said air defences had neutralised 43 drones. There were no immediate reports of casualties or damage. Russia's defence ministry, meanwhile, said its air defences had downed 125 Ukrainian drones over several Russian regions and the annexed region of Crimea into early Friday.

Iberia Parish Memorial Day Remembrance Program

IBERIA PARISH, La. () — Holding its annual Memorial Day Ceremony, the Iberia Veterans Association honors fallen soldiers in Downtown New Iberia. Percy Barrilleaux, an Army Veteran and President of the Iberia Veterans Association, says this is necessary to remind people the difference between Veterans Day and Memorial Day. 'A lot of people mistake Veterans Day and Memorial Day,' explained Barrilleaux. 'Veterans Day is more for us that is still living, but Memorial is for those that are gone.' Remembering soldiers who made the sacrifice to protect our freedoms, New Iberia Mayor Freddie Decourt shared with people the number of fallen New Iberia servicemen and women. Trump Couldn't Resist Shading Biden in Solemn Memorial Day Speech

President Donald Trump couldn't get Joe Biden off his mind on Memorial Day. The president took a veiled swipe at his predecessor while delivering an otherwise solemn speech honoring fallen soldiers, just hours after he launched a fresh Truth Social tirade against Biden. Trump opened his remarks at the Arlington National Cemetery with a tribute to the servicemen laid to rest there, but things quickly took a turn. 'Those young men could never have known what their sacrifice would mean to us, but we certainly know what we owe to them,' he said. 'Their valor gave us the freest, greatest, and most noble republic ever to exist on the face of the Earth, a republic that I am fixing after a long and hard four years. That was a hard four years we went through.' The crowd broke into applause as Trump went on—but even he seemed to acknowledge that it wasn't the right time to hash out old grievances. 'Who would let that happen? People pouring through our borders unchecked, people doing things that are indescribable and not for today to discuss,' he said. 'We're doing so very well right now, considering the circumstances… We will do better than we've ever done as a nation, better than ever before. I promise you that.' Trump's brief segue into politics in the middle of his speech appeared to be a continuation of his early Monday morning post on Truth Social, where he fumed at Biden and the judiciary in an all-caps rant. 'HAPPY MEMORIAL DAY TO ALL, INCLUDING THE SCUM THAT SPENT THE LAST FOUR YEARS TRYING TO DESTROY OUR COUNTRY… THROUGH AN OPEN BORDER THAT ONLY AN INCOMPETENT PRESIDENT WOULD APPROVE,' he wrote. Biden's office did not immediately respond to a request for comment from The Daily Beast. Trump also accused 'USA-hating' judges, many of whom have blocked the implementation of his sweeping agenda, of being 'on a mission' to keep alleged criminals in the U.S. 'HOPEFULLY THE UNITED STATES SUPREME COURT, AND OTHER GOOD AND COMPASSIONATE JUDGES THROUGHOUT THE LAND, WILL SAVE US FROM THE DECISIONS OF THE MONSTERS WHO WANT OUR COUNTRY TO GO TO HELL,' he said. Trump used his speech to tout a multimillion-dollar military parade honoring the Army's 250th anniversary, which is set for his birthday next month. 'In some ways, I'm glad I missed that second term where it was because I wouldn't be your president for that,' he said, drawing laughter from the audience. 'Can you imagine I missed that four years, and now look what I have. I have everything. Amazing the way things work out. God did that.'
