Family 'heartbroken' after B.C. mother and baby killed by falling tree on Vancouver Island
The family of a young mother and her five-month-old son killed by a falling tree at a Vancouver Island campground a week ago say they are "heartbroken" by the tragedy. In a statement provided through the Comox Valley RCMP, the family thanked emergency responders and others on the beach at Cumberland Lake Park Campground who tried to save the pair on July 31. The statement identifies the victims as Lynae and Elias, without providing their last names. A photo of the mother and child has also been released by the family and was provided by police. The statement says a community gathering to remember Lynae and Elias is scheduled for Sunday at Comox Marina Park, and the family thanked the public for their support. Police said last week that the 26-year-old mother died at the scene while the baby was taken to hospital but did not survive. RCMP say no criminality is suspected in the deaths.

Driver injured after falling tree crushes car in Holliston
A man is hospitalized after the car he was driving was hit by a falling tree in Holliston, Massachusetts. The fire department said it happened on Prentice Street just before 2:30 on Friday afternoon. Video from SkyEye showed the van had severe damage to the windshield and the driver's side front door. One woman who lives on that street told WBZ-TV she heard the crash from her bathroom and ran out to find the car was on top of tree branches. "It had a big branch underneath it. I thought maybe the guy ran over the tree and I went up to the vehicle and part of the tree fell into the car and I called 911 right away," said the woman who did not want to be identified. When paramedics arrived, the woman said they pulled the man out of the passenger side of the car. Holliston fire officials said the driver was ultimately flown to a hospital in Worcester. His condition is unknown. Back on Prentice Street, the woman we spoke with said she and her sister had been complaining about dead trees along the road for weeks. Their concern was that they would ultimately fall into the road or onto their house. "We have noticed that these trees are dead, and we have been calling the town asking if they can remove them and then this happened," said the woman. WBZ-TV reached out to the Holliston Town Manager for this report but have not heard back.

Mother, 5-month-old child killed by falling tree on Vancouver Island
A 26-year-old woman and her five-month-old child were killed by a falling tree on Vancouver Island, RCMP said. The incident at the Cumberland Lake Park Campground on Comox Lake, which is about 225 kilometres northwest of Victoria, happened shortly before 2 p.m. Thursday. The park also has a public beach and picnic area. B.C. Emergency Health Services said three ambulances responded and one patient was treated and taken to hospital in serious condition. The area where the incident happened is currently roped off as police investigate. Deputy Fire Chief Stephane Dionne of Cumberland Fire Rescue said they got a trauma call for two people injured by a tree that fell on the beach. When crews arrived on the scene, people were doing CPR on the two patients. Firefighters took over until the ambulances came. He said the people who were there before the crews were doing "everything in their power" for the patients and thanked them for their efforts. He said there is no concern around the lake. "It just happened to be one of those incidents that you cannot control," Dionne said. "But normally those areas are really safe." Dionne said he does not know about the condition of the tree that fell. The investigation is being handled by Comox Valley RCMP and the BC Coroner's Service. Cumberland Mayor Vickey Brown asked the public to stay away from the area as police investigate.

Young mother and baby killed by falling tree in Comox Valley, B.C.
A young mother and her five-month-old child have died after being struck by a falling tree near Vancouver Island's Comox Lake. Firefighters, paramedics and the Comox Valley RCMP were called to the area, a 25-minute drive from the city of Courtenay, around 1:45 p.m. July 31, Mounties said in a statement Friday. Despite the efforts of first responders, the 26-year-old woman died at the scene. The child was transported to hospital, but did not survive. There is no criminality suspected. Out of respect for the family, and given the sensitive nature of the loss, police say they will be releasing no further details regarding the incident. 'We extend our deepest condolences to all those affected and thank the bystanders who stepped in to help under heartbreaking circumstances,' the statement said.
