Hit movie franchise could get reboot 20 years after first film
A 'Night at the Museum' reboot, featuring a new plot and characters, is in the works. The reimagining is being overseen by 20th Century Studios with Tripper Clancy writing the script, Deadline reported. The film will be produced by Shawn Levy and Dan Levine from 21 Laps. Meanwhile, Emily Morris will oversee the project for the company, according to the outlet. While details on the plot are under wraps, the movie is said to feature a new cast of characters and storyline. 'Night at the Museum' was one of the biggest films of 2006 and kicked off one of the most successful family film franchises of the 21st century. The movie starred Ben Stiller as a man who takes a job as an overnight security guard at a museum only to learn the exhibits come to life during his shift because of an ancient curse. It also featured Robin Williams, Owen Wilson, Dick Van Dyke, Ricky Gervais and Rami Malek. It resulted in two sequels, 'Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian' (2009) and 'Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb" (2014) both of which did well at the box office. Levy has produced each installment. There also was a fourth film, 'Night at the Museum: Kahmunrah Rises Again,' which was an animated feature. Overall, the franchise has grossed $1.3 billion worldwide. Night at the Museum to be rebooted by less than 20 years after release of first film
A reboot of Night at the Museum is in the works with the family film franchise's original director, according to Deadline . Almost 20 years after the first movie was released, the production company 21 Laps has started to develop a reimagining of the series for 20th Century Studios. Night at the Museum (2006) starred Ben Stiller as a security guard at a museum in New York, where the exhibits come to life after it closed its doors for the night. Other cast members included the late Robin Williams, Owen Wilson and Rami Malek. The film's sequel, Battle of the Smithsonian , was released in 2009, followed by a third film, Secret of the Tomb , four months after the passing of Williams in 2014. Ricky Gervais, Dick Van Dyke and Rebel Wilson are amongst the other actors who have starred in the trilogy, which grossed around $1.3bn (£1bn) at the box office. Ben Stiller with Robin Williams in 'Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb' (20th Century Fox) According to Deadline , the reboot will follow an original storyline and feature a string of new characters. Tripper Clancy, the screenwriter behind Netflix's I Am Not Ok With This , is reportedly working on the script. Shawn Levy, who directed the first three films and Deadpool & Wolverine , will work as a producer on the reimagining. Further details are yet to be revealed, although it is clear the reboot will be the franchise's first film since 2022, when it released the animated film Night at the Museum: Kahmunrah Rises Again on Disney+. Levy is currently working on Star Wars: Starfighter , a standalone movie in the franchise, starring Ryan Gosling and Mia Goth. The film is scheduled to be released on 27 May 2027. Meanwhile, Stiller has since taken a backseat when it came to performing in lead roles, having spent the majority of his time recently behind the camera. 'I've been working on projects as a director and producer for a while, and wanting to act, but I kind of made the choice a few years ago that I was only going to do something if it really hit me,' Stiller explained during the 2024 Toronto International Film Festival. Amongst his biggest successes has been his work as an executive producer on the psychological thriller series, Severance , which concluded its second season earlier this year to rave reviews.

A stellar cast, NEW music from Rihanna, and dazzling animation: Why Smurfs is set to be the family movie event of the summer
If you thought summer 2025 was all about long-haul getaways and suncream spills, think again. This July, the hottest ticket in town is turning... blue. Hitting UK cinemas on 18 July, the brand-new Smurfs film promises to be a riotous ride for kids, parents, and nostalgic fans alike. Packed with jaw-dropping animation, a glittering A-list cast with the likes of James Corden and Kurt Russell, and a banging original soundtrack featuring new music from Rihanna (yes, really), this live-action animated musical fantasy comedy is the family event of the season. With the film directed by Chris Miller, the creative mind behind Shrek, Puss in Boots, and Madagascar, you can bet your white boots this is one film that's going to be full of heart and a hefty helping of smurf-tastic spectacle. So, what exactly is in store for audiences when the Smurfs take over the big screen once again? A high-stakes adventure with heart... and plenty of blue chaos At the heart of the story lies a rescue mission with universal consequences and some very tiny heroes. When the wise and beloved Papa Smurf (voiced by Hollywood heavyweight John Goodman) is kidnapped by the sinister duo of wizards Razamel and Gargamel, the peaceful Smurf Village is thrown into chaos. Their only hope? None other than the fearless and fabulous Smurfette, played with dazzling flair by Rihanna. In a twist that catapults the action into the modern world, Smurfette leads a gang of brave little blue buddies from their magical forest into the bustling chaos of our world. What follows is a fantastical fish-out-of-water romp, complete with magical portals, unlikely alliances, and more than one run-in with confused commuters. On their mission, the Smurfs join forces with a chaotic clan of magical misfits known as the SnooterPoots, led by the unflappable Mama Poot (brought to life by the ever-raspy and hilarious Natasha Lyonne). Together, they must navigate city streets, dodge evil spells, and rediscover what it truly means to be a Smurf. A cast so star-studded, it should come with sunglasses One of the biggest buzzes around Smurfs is its absolutely smurfing incredible voice cast. And leading the charge is none other than Rihanna, who not only gives Smurfette a bold, brilliant edge but also brings her own musical magic to the mix. She's joined in the recording studio by James Corden who voices a brand-new Smurf character named... well, No Name. Unlike his neighbours in Smurf Village, like Vanity Smurf, Worry Smurf and Brainy Smurf, No Name has yet to find what makes him special. But that's just the start. Nick Offerman, Sandra Oh, Octavia Spencer, Kurt Russell, Amy Sedaris, Xolo Maridueña, and Dan Levy (to name a few) are set to feature. This is a cast list that reads like a who's who of Hollywood royalty. And British fans can also expect to hear some familiar voices. Panel show staple Jon Richardson makes an appearance, Giovanna Fletcher brings her West End charm, and even Rylan Clark turns up to play. Yes, that Rylan! Rihanna returns with a beat you can't shake It's been almost ten years since Rihanna last dropped a full album, but Smurf fans can rejoice, because the pop icon is finally back in the studio. And let's just say: blue has never sounded so good. She leads the soundtrack with the instantly infectious 'Friend of Mine', a joyful, heart-thumping anthem that captures the core of what the Smurfs are all about: friendship, mischief, and doing the impossible together. The soundtrack also is bursting with smurf-tastic tracks from chart-toppers Cardi B, Desi Trill feat. DJ Khaled, Tyla, and more. Together, they deliver a mix of high-energy pop, soulful ballads and funky fantasy beats that'll have audiences dancing in the aisles. It's not just a soundtrack, it's a party. A visual feast for the whole family Of course, no Smurfs film would be complete without some serious animation magic... and this one delivers in technicolour spades. Smurfs blends the charm of classic Saturday morning cartoons with the cutting-edge visuals of modern animation. Every leaf glistens, every mushroom house bounces with personality, and every Smurf is packed with detail and delightful quirks. The world of Smurf Village is so vibrant, it feels like you could step right into it... just don't forget your mini blue passport! Drawing inspiration from Peyo's original 1950s comics, the design team has perfectly balanced nostalgic charm with modern polish. Why this is the must-see movie of the summer With a story full of heart and hilarity, a top-tier voice cast, music that's genuinely worth streaming on the way home, and animation that dazzles from start to finish, Smurfs isn't just a movie: it's an experience. It's the kind of film that has kids giggling, parents smiling, and teenagers pretending not to enjoy it (but secretly quoting it later).

Elio, review: Pixar's voyage to space is refreshingly weird
Elio is an agreeable junior space odyssey that's a safe bet for families in the run-up to the summer holidays, even if it's not destined to be a Pixar film for the ages. You can pick all sorts of holes in it here and there – a game for restless adults, maybe. But plenty of younger viewers will be spirited away with no complaints. Whatever the teething troubles that made its budget soar to $300 million, the film has at least been shepherded up to par. While it's unlikely to do a fraction of the $1.7 billion business Pixar's Inside Out 2 managed last year, it has a refreshingly zany take on one boy's all-consuming hobby. Elio (voiced by Yonas Asuncion Kibreab) is a recently orphaned 11-year-old, who feels lonely, despite all the best efforts of the aunt (Zoe Saldaña) who's raising him. A bit of a nerdy cipher, he seems to be somewhere on the spectrum. He's not the first neurodivergent character from this studio (take Dory in Finding Nemo), but feels a few drafts away from being as endearing as those others. If that difference is, in a sense, his 'superpower' – as this film suggests – it's puzzling how little he gets to flex it. His one solace is being obsessed with space, and he yearns for some connection in the cold reaches of the universe: life on Earth has simply not panned out the way he wants. Miraculously, his prayers are answered, well beyond making radio contact with alien civilisations. An intergalactic parliament zaps him into their midst and considers him for an ambassadorial post – gullible enough to believe he's Earth's leader, simply because he tells them so. The odd bods in this council owe much to the wibbly senators in Star Wars. There's a playful dash of Douglas Adams ' absurdity there, too. When they refuse to elect a warmongering bully named Lord Grigon (Brad Garrett), he declares Armageddon and only Elio has the guts to enter into peace talks. Grigon wears a giant armoured carapace and wields cannons, but inside looks like a tardigrade, much like his chubby son Glordon (Remy Edgerly), who dreads the day he's supposed to strap in and become a feared war machine like his dad. The oddity of Elio is that this subplot is quite a lot more touching than the hero's journey. A father-son reconciliation between these piglet-sized space slugs is the one thing in danger of moistening the eye. The film is too scattershot to be high-end Pixar. It tries to add jeopardy with a breakneck voyage through flying debris in space, a sequence that feels arbitrarily inserted. Still, this vision of the cosmos is goofy enough to keep your youngsters beguiled for 90 minutes.
