Woman Loses Brother and Dad Within 3 Years of Each Other. Then She Welcomes Identical Twin Boys (Exclusive)
Nikki's family was devastated to lose two family members in just three years Nikki was in the middle of IVF at the time of her dad's death and weeks later, she'd learn she was pregnant The birth of twin boys felt like a full-circle moment for the tight-knit family, she tells PEOPLEAfter two painful losses in her family, one woman experienced a twist of fate she never could have expected. Nikki's family of five was tight-knit growing up. enjoying a childhood full of "fun memories" in a Maryland suburb. Nikki's father, in the military, served in Iraq before coming home in 2008. "He had a lot of trauma. He had PTSD from the war. So it was kind of a different dad when he came back, but he adjusted the best he could," she tells PEOPLE. The family experienced heartbreak in 2021 when Nikki's younger brother, Brian, died unexpectedly. The loss, which took place on Memorial Day, put the family in a difficult place. "He was only 28. It was a lot," she says, noting her family tried to lean on each other to press forward. The loss weighed on everyone, including Nikki's dad. Never miss a story — sign up for to stay up-to-date on the best of what PEOPLE has to offer, from celebrity news to compelling human interest stories. "My dad had different ailments and issues from his time in the military," she continues. "He ended up passing away in his sleep on Mother's Day 2024." Nikki's father sadly didn't live to fulfill one of his greatest desires — to be a grandfather. "I was doing IVF. I only had one embryo left. My dad used to ask, 'When am I going to be a pop-pop?' " she says. He was supportive after the first transfer didn't result in a pregnancy. "I remember he said, 'Don't worry, Nik. Next time is going to be the champ.' He told me that right before he passed," she shares. "I did a transfer on May 31, which was the [anniversary of the] day my brother passed. We did a pregnancy test on June 10, which was the day we had buried my brother." Nikki and her family were overwhelmed to learn the test was positive. "To find out that we had life coming the day that we buried him ... and it was just a month after my dad had passed, it was emotional. I have always wanted to be a mother, as much as I wanted to breathe. It wasn't just that it was happening, but that the one embryo brought me two boys," she says. The mom-to-be had always wanted twins, but was also "scared" to receive the news. "I don't know if I've been as happy as I was that day actually. Scared to death, but very happy. In my heart, I knew it was going to be boys," she says. "I did want girls, but I knew it was going to be boys because of my dad and my brother." Sharing the news with her family was "so beautiful" for the expectant mom, who decided on a surprise. In celebration of her late dad's birthday, she invited everyone for a barbecue, one of his favorites. "When they showed up, it was a 'babycue.' Then, they realized it was for me. We were able to capture it on camera and to witness their excitement, especially because my family doesn't have twins, it was just so special," she shares. "It was a lot for them to take in that I'm even pregnant, and there were two babies coming. They were so happy about it." After a tricky pregnancy that required diligence on Nikki's part, she welcomed her boys, whose names, Hendrix and Jaxson, were inspired by each of the men she'd lost. "My brother, Brian, was a man of much character — funny, charming and very stylish. His personality was one for the books. My dad, Leon, was a noble man — a husband, father, incredible chef and American soldier with many ribbons and accolades who was 'just doing his job.' While the twins will never replace them, we find solace and a calming peace knowing that they have so many traces of their personalities that further allow their memories to forever live on," Nikki shares. "They act like who they're named after," she adds with a laugh. "Hendrix acts like my dad and Jaxson acts like my brother. It was funny because everyone thought they'd send me signs through them. But it's more than that, down to the little facial expressions. It is the most beautiful, full-circle moment." A photographer herself, Nikki marked an early moment with the babies with a family photo of herself, her mom and surviving brother with the babies. In another version of the photo, her father and brother are digitally added to show the complete family. "We all just cried. We're very, very blessed. We didn't and couldn't have replaced them, but to have gotten two more family members back into our house, it's so special," she shares. "It's the beauty in the ashes. We have been through so much and to have so much life come in after death, it has been a beautiful experience." Read the original article on People

Mother, 40, and two young sons lose lives to 'silent killer' while on vacation in Mexico
An Illinois mom and her two teenage sons were tragically poisoned to death by a suspected carbon monoxide leak while staying at a family home in Mexico, devastated relatives have revealed. Brenda Correa, 40, and her sons Leo, 14, and Armando, 13, of Des Plaines were found dead on July 2 after family members grew concerned when they stopped answering their phones. The trio had been staying at a home in Michoacan, in west-central Mexico, when they were overcome by the deadly gas – known as the 'silent killer.' Correa was found in the shower, while her two boys were discovered near their beds, according to her sister-in-law Milena Mroczek, who has been keeping friends and family updated on her Facebook page. It was an uncle who made the grim discovery after being sent to check on them. Heartbreakingly, Brenda's husband, Armando Correa Sr., and their daughter Brittany had remained behind in Illinois – and were not with them during the doomed trip. No one else was in the house at the time of the tragedy, and the cause of death remains under investigation by authorities in Mexico. The family had hoped to repatriate the bodies, but due to the ongoing investigation, Brenda and her sons were laid to rest in Mexico. The shock loss has rocked the family's community in Des Plaines, Illinois, where Brenda worked as a teacher at the Westerhold Early Learning Center. 'She had a wonderful outlook on life,' Mroczek said. 'She always had a smile on her face.' Leo had just graduated from eighth grade at Algonquin Middle School and was due to start high school at Maine West in the fall. His younger brother, Armando, was heading into the eighth grade and was remembered for his cheeky sense of humor. Des Plaines School District 62 said they were 'devastated' by the loss and would be offering emotional support services to students, staff, and grieving families. Tributes have poured in online from stunned friends, parents, and coworkers. Des Plaines Mayor Andrew Goczkowski called the deaths 'heartbreaking' and urged residents to keep the family in their thoughts and prayers. A memorial Mass will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Stephen the Protomartyr Catholic Church in Des Plaines.

Donegal crash: Mother and daughter who died named locally
A mother and daughter who died following a road crash near Carndonagh, Co Donegal on Wednesday evening have been named locally. Six-year-old Ella McLaughlin was fatally injured when the car in which she was a rear seat passenger collided with a van on the R240 road at Glentogher at around 6.30pm. Her mother, Natalie McLaughlin, a nurse in her 20s who was driving the car, was taken to Altnagelvin Hospital in Derry and later transferred to the Royal Victoria Hospital in Belfast. However, she died from her injuries on Thursday afternoon. Two other people remained in hospital on Thursday evening following the crash. All four people who were in the car are understood to be members of the same family unit. READ MORE 'A female child, who was a rear passenger, is being treated for non-life-threatening injuries at Royal Victoria Hospital,' An Garda Síochána said in a statement. Photograph: Joe Dunne/North West Newspix Cllr Martin McDermott, Cathaoirleach of Donegal County Council's Inishowen Municipal District, said he knew the family and that the loss of the mother and daughter was 'just devastating'. 'The loss of anybody on our roads is difficult for any community to take,' the Fianna Fáil politician said. 'But the loss of a mother and daughter, particularly given the fact that they are so young, is even more poignant and more difficult to accept.' Mr McDermott said people from the area were 'just numb' after learning of the two death and 'there is very little I can add to that other than to keep them all in our thoughts and prayers'. The deaths of the mother and daughter brought the number of fatalities on Co Donegal's roads so far this year to 10. Fr Con McLaughlin, parish priest in Carndonagh, said he went to Altnagelvin Hospital to be with those injured in the crash and would never forget the sadness in the emergency department. 'You had doctors and nurses running around trying to do their best to help these poor helpless people,' he said. 'It is something I will never, ever forget. 'I just wanted to be a presence there for the family and I did not speak too much but I just wanted them to know that we are all there for them.' Fr McLaughlin said the people of Inishowen were sadly used to tragedies happening on the peninsula's roads. 'We can visualise how they must feel at this time and how the wider community feels,' he said. Donegal councillor Joy Beard said the 'entire community is just numb and once again just lost for words'. 'Inishowen has known more than its fair share of tragedy on its roads over the years and it has happened again.' The R240 was closed for a period on Thursday while a technical examination of the crash scene was carried out but reopened later in the day. The head of the Garda Traffic Corps in Donegal, Insp Seán McDaid, appealed for witnesses, particularly any road users who may have relevant camera footage, to contact Buncrana Garda station on 074 932 0540, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111 or any garda station.
