The Birkin Inspires Yet Another Homage

Hop aboard a Hampton Jitney bus or a ferry to Nantucket this summer and you will probably see some L.L. Bean Boat and Totes, or maybe even an Hermès Birkin. You might also spot a new bag that looks like the child of those two: the Boatkin. Introduced in January by Hathaway Hutton, a brand in Philadelphia, Boatkins are made of canvas — some from old Boat and Totes — and have a shape and hardware similar to those of Birkins. 'Quiet luxury with a smirk' is how Hathaway Hutton's founder, Jen Risk, described the bag. 'I wanted to mess with the seriousness of it all and give it some personality.' Ms. Risk, 41, a self-taught sewer who started her brand in 2017, has positioned herself as a sort of Dr. Frankenstein of luxury goods: She has sold hand-painted Goyard totes and pool attire made of vintage Hermés beach towels. The Boatkin bag is her newest creation, and is among the latest accessories to borrow some of the Birkin's clout. See: Telfar's Shopping Bag, also known as the 'Bushwick Birkin'; the design collective MSCHF's 'Birkinstock' sandals; and Slow and Steady Wins the Race's four-sided Birkin replica. Each Boatkin is made in a work space at Ms. Risk's home, she said, a process that can take up to 10 hours. (A Birkin, by comparison, can take more than 18 hours to make, while a Boat and Tote can be stitched together in under 10 minutes.) Boatkins made from Boat and Totes provided by customers start at about $1,200; versions made with materials sourced by Ms. Risk, at about $1,600. She has sold more than 300 bags since introducing the style. Want all of The Times? Subscribe.

Bag Charms Are Booming: Why Is This Statement Resonating Now?

Heaven Mayhem and Freja NYC collaboration, Photo Credit: Courtesy of Heaven Mayhem and Freja NYC Call it nostalgia, self-expression, or a playful twist on everyday luxury — bag charms are having a moment. From whimsical plushies to refined, jewelry-inspired tokens, statement charms are dangling from purses everywhere. Women aren't just getting the bag — they're accessorizing it, too. Of course, this isn't an entirely new phenomenon. Fashion has long been known to sit at the intersection of practicality and play. It's also no coincidence that whimsical brands like Jellycat (which has exploded in popularity with adult collectors, amassing a devoted following on TikTok) are also earning their spot on designer handbags, with their food-inspired plush keychains. Before charms became high-fashion heirlooms, they were hanging from Kipling's signature nylon bags in the form of plush monkey keychains. Luxury brands soon elevated the concept. Brands like Louis Vuitton and Fendi transformed bag charms into status symbols. Fendi's Bag Bugs (or 'monster charms'), designed by Karl Lagerfeld in 2014, were plush, playful and priced in the hundreds — turning bags into characters and collectors' items. Now, in a post-pandemic world shaped by emotional dressing and nostalgic aesthetics, bag charms are having a renaissance. From Lububu dolls to Monchhichi revivals and fashion accessory brands blurring the lines between plush and precious, the trend reflects a desire for comfort, joy and individuality — especially in an era of 'trend burnout' and aesthetic overload. Fashion sourcer and founder of SourcedBy, Gab Waller, points to the power of belonging: 'I really think it all comes down to being part of an 'if you know, you know' type of community. Owning one makes you feel like you're part of something, and right now, community is at the core of what consumers are craving.' This rise in plush charms and toy-like accessories aligns with a broader cultural movement: the kidult trend. Adults — especially Gen Z — are embracing toys, collectibles, and playful accessories not just for fun, but for emotional comfort and expression. According to market research firm Circana, adults over 18 now account for 28% of global toy sales, with U.S. adult toy purchases exceeding $7 billion in the 12 months ending June 2024. Labubu plush toys have become a significant trend in the collectible market, with resale prices varying based on edition, rarity and demand. 'It's cheeky! I love it,' says Taylor Sade, founder of jewelry brand Vertigo (whose collab with handbag brand Liffner launches in late May). 'Ultimately, 'getting the bag' has always been about securing what's yours. Accessorizing speaks to that — it's no longer just about owning the status symbol, but about elevating it through personal flair.' 'We're seeing the rise of emotional collectibles,' adds Emily Austen, founder of PR agency Emerge and author of Smarter. 'From enamel pins to limited-run toys, there's a new category of accessory that doesn't just adorn — it affirms.' Austen continues: 'Charms sit beautifully between fashion and fandom. They borrow the collectability and drop culture of sneakers, but filter it through emotion and personal meaning. They're playful, affordable(ish), and portable — the accessory equivalent of a meme with main-character energy." Photo Credit: Courtesy of Smarter, Emily Austen That emotional connection is what inspired the collaboration between lifestyle and accessory brand Heaven Mayhem and luxury vegan handbag line Freja NYC. Together, they launched a limited-edition capsule of two bags and three charms, combining Freja's beloved Mini Chrystie bag with charms inspired by Heaven Mayhem's best-selling Julia necklace. The charms are visually cohesive with the bag color scheme yet striking with bold hardware. 'It only made sense to adorn the bags with a charm that represents Heaven Mayhem,' says Heaven Mayhem founder Pia Mance. 'They're a spin-off of our iconic Julia necklace, but reimagined for your everyday essentials.' 'The bag charms celebrate personal style and allow people to be unique in how they adorn their bags or keyrings,' she adds. 'They blur the line between functionality and fashion, and bring that playful element to everyday life.' Freja founder Jenny Lei echoes that sentiment: 'I started Freja as a work bag brand for women entering the workforce, because I couldn't find a tote that felt functional yet confidence-boosting. Our first tagline was 'bags that work overtime, so you don't have to.' Now, I think the act of accessorizing that bag symbolizes something more — women really owning their power. Not just trusting themselves and chasing dreams, but gaining confidence and having fun with it.' Waller agrees — and says her clients are responding to charms as a way to access luxury without the full price tag: "To be able to buy a Prada keychain or a Miu Miu bag charm, it's something my clients are gravitating toward because it's still relatively affordable. That charm makes a non-designer bag feel luxurious.' Vertigo's Sade adds: 'Whether your bag costs $100 or $10K, chances are you aren't the only one who owns it. Small accessorization opportunities, whether it's charms, scarves, chains, or whatever else suits your style, add a sense of individuality and originality that fashion, and many other industries for that matter, are really championing.' Photo Credit: Courtesy of Vertigo Laura Gabriele, a style expert and wardrobe curator, sees the charm boom as part of a larger accessories renaissance. 'We're in the ultimate era of accessorizing these days, which I love,' she says. 'With the rise of quiet luxury, ready-to-wear has leaned more minimal — so we're relying on standout but not necessarily loud accessories to make a statement. Items like sunglasses, brooches, statement cuffs, stacks of jewelry — and yes, bag charms — are no longer afterthoughts. In many cases, they're the entire focal point of a look.' Jewelry designer Adina Reyter also sees charms as an extension of something deeper — not just style, but sentiment. Photo Credit: Courtesy of Adina Reyter 'When we launched our bag charms, I wanted to create something lasting that could work on your bag or your keys,' Reyter says. 'When I was 16 and got my license, someone gave me a Tiffany keychain with my name engraved on it. Our bag charms carry that same meaning. You can pick your zodiac or an engravable Big Bead and add any color of the rainbow enamel beads to create this joyful charm that reflects your personality. Bag charms add joy to your bag, your keys — and it's those little moments that make everything better.' For Austen, the appeal is also emotional: "In a content-first world, your charm becomes part of your identity. It's like Taylor Swift's friendship bracelets — a visual code that connects us to others. It's an easy way for brands to create emotional products and for people to express themselves. At their core, charms are about personality. And there's always room for that.' Austen's own Smarter book charm, a tiny token modeled after her bestselling book, sold over 800 units in a quiet, invite-only drop. 'It sold out almost instantly,' she says. 'Purely through word-of-mouth and vibes. We didn't run ads. We gave people something they didn't know they needed — a charm that whispered 'you're doing great, sweetie' every time they zipped up their bag. It wasn't just merch — it was a mini manifesto.' Designer Julie Etienne, founder of the jewelry line Mademoiselle Jules, describes her charms as wearable energy. 'I wanted to take the symbolism and intention behind jewelry and reimagine it in a fresh, fashion-forward way,' Etienne says. 'We currently have three styles, each with a unique mood and meaning. Photo Credit: Courtesy of Mademoiselle Jules "For example, our Talislove Charm features a big bubble heart, a mini gold heart, an evil eye, a cornetto (Italian horn), and a freshwater pearl — some of my best-selling symbols across earrings and necklaces. Each one represents protection, strength, and love. They're like modern talismans for your keys or your bag.' 'They hit the sweet spot between statement and sentiment,' she adds. 'In a world where people are curating their style down to every detail, bag charms are a joyful way to express who you are. After a few seasons of quiet luxury, we're seeing a return to personality and play — and bag charms are an easy way to add both, without overthinking it.' 'They remind us of the joy of personalization,' Etienne continues. 'Like sticker books or charm bracelets from childhood, but elevated. Each one speaks to something personal: a reminder to stay strong, a tribute to someone you love, or just a pop of color that makes you smile.' 'I carry a tote bag every day, and on it I have a pink Prada teddy bear and a Fendi strawberry,' says Waller. 'That combo is uniquely me." For Pia Mance, it's also about range: 'You can enjoy the charm's fun nature from a distance, on a keyring — or go bold and adorn your bag. It's personal flair, without the pressure of wearing something expressive around your neck or ears.' Photo Credit: Heaven Mayhem bag charm Or as Vertigo's Sade puts it: 'Sometimes a charm blends into your look. Other times, it's all about contrast. That's the beauty of it — you can switch it up depending on what you want to express that day.' 'I see bag charms as a staple,' Waller adds. 'The collecting craze might slow down, but the charm isn't going anywhere. They've become a permanent part of how we personalize and style our accessories — even on Birkins and Kellys.' 'I see accessories as more powerful than ever,' Gabriele explains. 'My clients are investing in timeless staples they'll wear again and again. They're proud outfit repeaters. But accessories are where they play. A plushy charm or bead stack can instantly make a formal bag feel less serious — and open up entirely new ways to wear the same look." 'I don't think this is a fleeting trend," Gabriele adds. "As minimal dressing becomes the default, charms become the twist — the wink, the personality, the way in.'

Popular multi-million dollar empire quietly launches huge closing down sale: 'Another one bites the dust'

A popular fashion accessories empire has quietly launched a massive closing down sale after years of turmoil - including entering voluntary administration and a bitter legal dispute between its co-founders. The Daily Edited (TDE), best known for its monogrammed handbags, wallets, phone cases and travel essentials, was bought out of liquidation in late 2022 after being rescued by the owner of the accessories chain Colette by Colette Hayman. However, in recent days, the multi-million dollar celebrity-loved brand announced its shock closure with a 'final call' on a huge online sale offering up to 80 per cent off everything. 'Closing down sale. Final days. Everything must go,' the post read. Fans of the brand are devastated by the news, with many saying they were unaware of the unexpected closure until they randomly stumbled across the sale posts on social media. 'It makes me so sad because I love The Daily Edited. It's a very sad time,' customer Tenielle Hamlin said in her video about the sudden closure. 'Oh no. Another one bites the dust,' one shared. 'This was peak era for the 21st season,' another revealed, along with a crying emoji. In recent days, the celebrity-loved brand announced its shock closure with a 'final call' on a huge online sale offering up to 80 per cent off everything Many loyal customers reminisce about how TDE was part of their lives growing up, with one saying: 'I have a travel wallet from them and have had it for about seven years now, still perfect condition and I love it.' 'I remember they were great for giving gifts to my girlfriends,' one recalled. 'So sad, most of my bags are from there. Although, mine are from when the original owners had it,' another shared. According to social media, it was business as usual for TDE, with picture-perfect posts of its fashion accessories items being shared on the feed up until May 7. The brand began quietly announcing its 'sitewide flash sale' on Facebook from May 9, starting with deals of up to 70 per cent off. Alyce Tran and Tania Liu founded The Daily Edited in 2014 after meeting three years earlier while working at a Perth law firm. The brand was known as the first in Australia to offer personalised initials on handbags, wallets, phone cases, beauty bags and more. The friends went on to build the business into a fashion powerhouse, turning over an annual $25million, with stores in Sydney, Melbourne and New York in addition to their online offering. In 2021, Ms Tran quietly sold half her stake in the company - two years after Ms Liu took her her court over claims she had misused company funds. However, Ms Tran denied any wrongdoing. A year later, TDE went into liquidation before ultimately being saved from collapse. But Marquee Retail Group (MRG) - the parent company which owned Colette and The Daily Edited - went into administration in April 2024 amid declining sales. After a two-month voluntary administration, MRG, led by former Myer chief executive Bernie Brookes, retained The Daily Edited as an online-only brand.

The 17 Best Affordable Handbag Brands That Ooze Luxury, According to Experts

If you purchase an independently reviewed product or service through a link on our website, WWD may receive an affiliate commission. Without the residuals from a worldwide stadium tour or a TV deal, how often can you say you have the same bag as Taylor Swift or Kendall Jenner? We'll tell you: Anytime you're carrying clutches and totes from affordable bag brands like Aupen, By Far, and Mansur Gavriel. The very best ones deviate from dupe culture, which often features unoriginal designs made with lower-quality materials. Truly excellent budget-friendly brands tout styles with the same level of craftsmanship and luxe materials (like rich Italian leather and velvety suede) as designer handbags, and put forward their twist on beloved silhouettes like crossbody bags, shoulder bags, slouchy bags, and tote bags. Many times, they have the very same qualities that draw us toward labels with eye-watering prices, such as their use of sustainable materials and celebrity stamps of approval. More from WWD Pierre Cardin Aims to Raise Profile in the U.S. EXCLUSIVE: Gabriela Hearst Launches Tailored Bespoke A New Era at Fashion Island, the Newport Beach Shopping Destination Besides bragging rights, there are even more reasons to shop from one of the best affordable designer handbag brands, like the fact that our carryalls are strapped to our sides 24/7 and, as a result, face a lot of wear and tear, according to author and fashion stylist Heather Newberger. 'While I can live with the idea that someone may accidentally spill a drink on my everyday bag, I can't really get behind my designer bag being destroyed by something as nonchalant as nail polish being knocked over at the salon,' she adds. If your beach bag plans on touching sand, your bag for work has a sticky subway commute, or your overnight bag is subject to the inside of the overhead bin, a designer pick may not be the most practical choice. Then, you have to think about what affordable means to you. Is a $40 bag actually 'affordable' when it inevitably breaks in a month? As NYC-based fashion stylist Audree Kate López explains, 'If the bag is $200 and you wear it three times per week for a year, it's less than a dollar per wear,' as opposed to a cheaper bag that falls apart after one wedding reception. Contemporary designer bag brands are everywhere, if you know where to look: New labels seemingly emerge out of thin air on a daily basis, and classic heritage brands unleash iterations of cherished styles quarterly. Suffice to say, we have plenty of affordable bag brands to choose from. To narrow down the list, we created this guide with expert tips and product picks to find the best, most high-quality affordable purse brands for anyone's needs. Updated May 2025: This article on the best affordable handbag brands was updated with new editor product picks and trending brands. The brand has since expanded to sleek, on-trend shoulder bags like the Chrystie and the Mercer, which offer trending mini bags for the days when you don't have to carry around your laptop. Crafted from high-quality vegan leather and priced between $248 and $548, Freya's bags strike a thoughtful balance between style, sustainability, and function. Blackwood's bags have become a favorite among celebrities, with fans including Kim Kardashian, Cardi B, Doja Cat, and Tracee Ellis Ross. But it was in 2020 that the brand made a major cultural impact with the release of its 'End Systemic Racism' tote that went viral in the aftermath of the George Floyd protests and calls for civil justice in America, transforming the accessory into both a fashion statement and a call to action. That mini bag—still part of the core collection—is now a signature piece, available in a variety of textures, colors, and finishes. It's not uncommon to see tastemakers like Taylor Swift and Sara Jessica Parker pose for paparazzi photos with the Cloud Leather Clutch in hand. Meanwhile, Katie Holmes has opted for the oversized Candy Hobo in the silhouette-du-jour and an oversized iteration of the brand's iconic Bucket Bag. Mansur Gavriel's designs aren't the only way the brand takes liberties. In addition to crafting its cute affordable handbags with criminally soft, supple Italian leather, it also experiments with different sustainable practices such as the partial apple leather bag made from recycled skins of the fall fruit (yes, really). For years now, the Los Angeles-based affordable purse brand Staud has been an off-duty accessory label of choice for celebs. Jenner has tucked the Tommy Beaded Bag under her T-shirt-clad shoulders on several occasions, and we've spotted Hailey Bieber carrying the Moon Bag in tow alongside her white trainers and hoodie. And, considering co-founders Sarah Staudinger and George Augusto built the brand with a mission to create high-quality bags whose styles match timeless classics for trend, it's clear why the bags are ubiquitous among cool girls everywhere. While many designs embody quintessential silhouettes such as a rectangle-shaped tote or structured crossbody, each one breaks tradition in some form, whether it's by spelling out novelty sayings in dazzling crystal beads or showcasing flashy animal print shades. $250 Buy Now at amazon $295 Buy Now at amazon $295 Buy Now at amazon Year established: 2000 Popular bag styles: Bou Bag, Tote Bag Price range: $115 to $525 Though Scandinavian brand Ganni is over two decades old, leave it to internet darlings like Emma Chamberlain and a strong social media presence, (#GanniGirls, anyone?), to keep its mainstay among the fashion community. As illustrated by the brand's use of oversized collars and playful proportions, it will not be denied from having fun, and similar to its apparel, its handbags don't take themselves too seriously, either. We suddenly feel like we're back in math class while holding Ganni's delightful collection of hexagonal and square-shaped bags — each becomes more exciting when you delve inside to reveal leopard print lining or equally thrilling design detail. And who wouldn't smile while swinging the extended knotted handle of the Raffia Bag from their hand? Make no mistake, despite their quirky appeal, these bags boast the same high-quality and eco-conscious materials as Ganni's clothing. As a bonus, most of the bags are made from recycled leather. $425 Buy Now at ganni $475 Buy Now At ganni Year established: 2016 Popular bag styles: Numéro Un Nano bag, Numéro Sept Mini handbag Price Range: $290 to $1,350 This French family-owned brand captured the hearts and wallets of your most stylish friends, fashion influencers, and the TikTok community. Polène bags even (fittingly, we might add) played a recurring role in the series 'Emily in Paris' — we're still lusting after the Yké in Epuisé that swung off Lily Collins' wrist in the series. You can add the royal seal of approval to this brand's resume, too, as we clocked Kate Middleton carrying the Numèro Sept Mini Handbag. We're not surprised that Polène is popular among princesses and celebrities alike, considering all of the brand's bags are made with rich Spanish and Italian leather crafted in Ubrique, Spain, a village famous for its leather goods. Additionally, each design touts curved edges, waves, and folds which lends them a touchable and artistic appeal fit for the boardroom or the ballet. Its designs keep functionality in mind too, as many of the shoulder bags feature adjustable straps so you can wear them under your arm or as a crossbody. Between their durability (take a look at this TikTok that literally tears one apart to show its impeccable craftsmanship), universal silhouettes, and rich neutral tones, you can count on these bags as enduring wardrobe staples. By Far manufactures all of its bags in family-owned factories in Bulgaria and Spain, where craftsmen pay sharp attention to detail, as evidenced by the fine, nearly imperceptible stitching and elevated materials featured in every design. And if you don't immediately recognize the By Far name, you'll most definitely recognize its bags. Kendall Jenner has slung the '90s-inspired Rachel affordable shoulder bag over her shoulder a time or two. And the Amber bag keeps good company with Hollywood elite like Kaia Gerber, Selena Gomez, and Bella Hadid. While many of its carryalls have minimalistic designs, anyone seeking an option with more pizzazz can still find vibrant shocks of pink and chain link hardware intermixed throughout its collection. $318 Buy Now at farfetch $300 Buy Now at ssense Material: 'Leather or faux leather is still your best friend when it comes to choosing a high-quality material for your bag,' says Newberger, who adds that nylon is another great option because it's easy to clean and durable. López agrees and suggests opting for more unconventional materials like tweed, wicker, and straw bags to add additional personality to your carryall. In addition to steering clear of cheap-looking materials such as polyester and polyurethane, López tells us to avoid plastic or overly shiny hardware. Instead, she suggests looking for minimal hardware and invisible stitching, adding that we should skip contrast and colorful stitching, because 'this can make the bag feel juvenile, cheap, and not timeless,' she says. That doesn't mean the fun is forbidden. As Newberger points out, design details like beading, unique handles, ruching, ties, and zippers can punch up the appearance of an affordable purse, regardless of material. 'Each of these things offers the consumer something additional and helps justify the cost,' she adds. Silhouette: In general, our experts agree that avoiding super trendy silhouettes and purchasing minimalist handbags is the best way to make an affordable handbag look more expensive than it is. Still, Lòpez says you can lean into the trends and have a multi-use, versatile piece by choosing a bag in a classic neutral color, and one made with high-quality materials, like Italian leather. Additionally, you can't go wrong with classic crossbody bags, or even belt bags as these are ideal for everyday wear since they allow you to go hands-free and keep the purse close by your side while you navigate through busy shopping centers and streets. Size: 'I believe that you need at least three bags in your closet,' says López. She recommends a small clutch for special occasions, a large leather or canvas tote bag to function as your catch-all bag for work and travel, and a go-to everyday purse such as a medium-sized crossbody bag. Most importantly, your bag should be large enough to fit whatever items you need that day. Purchasing structured bags with compartments and pockets can keep the bag looking sleek and polished, even if the inside is bulging with your life's essentials. Purpose: Before Newberger chooses the type of bag she'll be carrying for the day, she considers how far she's traveling, who she's seeing, and even the weather. 'If I see rain in the forecast whatsoever, I'm choosing an affordable bag over a statement one,' she says. Above all, functionality is key, says López, who adds that you wouldn't bring your work tote to a wedding or grab a micro-clutch before heading out for a long day with multiple pit stops. She asks herself, 'Can it fit my phone, cards, keys, lipstick, and whatever I'll need for the day? Does the work tote fit my laptop, chargers, water bottle, etc.? Does the bag have a zipper or snap closure for security and safety?'
