The British woman who could be crowned Anna Wintour's successor at US Vogue: She tells the French how to dress and is a wellness guru. So is Claire Thomson-Jonville eyeing up her mentor's old job?
It is a grey rainy day and I have just entered the offices of French Vogue in the heart of Paris. I am here to meet Claire Thomson-Jonville, the magazine's editor – or head of editorial content as we must now call it – hand-picked by Anna Wintour, who less than a year into the role is being mooted as one of her possible successors at US Vogue. It has been a decade since I last worked for Vogue – I was a contributing editor at the British edition for more than quarter of a century and cut my teeth at fellow Conde Nast publication Vanity Fair in New York – but there is something about being here in this whitewashed rabbit warren of a space, having to manoeuvre between all the bulging garment rails, which immediately brings it all rushing back.

Her other notable achievements include being named Condé Nast's artistic director in 2013, followed by a promotion in 2020, where she was named global editorial director of Vogue and global chief content officer of Condé Nast. Vogue has over 28 international editions, including key editions published by Condé Nast: Vogue France, Vogue Italia, Vogue España, Vogue Germany, Vogue UK, Vogue China, Vogue Japan, Vogue India, Vogue Arabia, Vogue Mexico & Latinoamérica, Vogue Korea, and Vogue Brazil, among others. Currently, it's unclear who will replace Wintour. Since the news broke, Vogue readers and fashion lovers have taken to social media to express their appreciation. "What's Vogue without Anna Wintour?" one user wrote via X. "What?! Never thought I'd see the day," added another. A third user made a joke referencing The Devil Wears Prada, a 2006 film largely believed to be based on Wintour, writing, "What's Jacqueline Follet and Irv up to?" Wintour is also known for her involvement with the Met Gala, held annually on the first Monday of May. She has chaired the star-studded ball since 1995, transforming it from a local fundraiser into the most prestigious night in fashion. As the event's key organizer and tastemaker, she curates the guest list, theme, and overall vision each year. Wintour has yet to comment on the news.
