Pakistan reports second death of 2025 from deadly brain-eating amoeba

KARACHI: A 23-year-old man died in Pakistan's southern port city of Karachi this week after contracting Naegleria fowleri, the Sindh Health Department said on Wednesday, marking the second death of the year from the deadly brain-eating amoeba. Naegleria fowleri, commonly known as the brain-eating amoeba, has a fatality rate of over 98 percent. It is transmitted when contaminated water enters the body through the nose and cannot be spread from person to person. Pakistan has witnessed a rise in Naegleria fowleri cases in recent years, with more than 100 reported deaths since the first confirmed infection in 2008. Five fatalities were recorded in 2024 alone. In the latest case the deceased, a resident of Karachi's Orangi Town area, was hospitalized on May 30 after suffering from symptoms on May 28. He died on June 3 after the presence of Naegleria fowleri was confirmed in the patient on June 1. 'Upon investigation, it was noted that the patient had not participated in any water-related activities,' the Sindh Health Department said. 'His only exposure was regular use of water at home and use of water at a nearby local mosque to perform ablution.' Symptoms of Naegleria fowleri infection include severe headache, altered sense of taste, high fever, sensitivity to light, nausea and vomiting. Death typically occurs within five to seven days of infection. The health department confirmed this was the second death in Pakistan from Naegleria fowleri in 2025. The first death was reported in March when a 36-year-old woman died from the same disease. She was also a resident of Karachi. A 2021 study by the Sindh Health Department found that 95 percent of water samples in Karachi, Sindh's provincial capital, were unfit for human consumption. Experts say the contamination leads to the spreading of the brain-eating amoeba among the city's residents.

Gaza civil defence says many killed while waiting for aid in Rafah

Update: Date: 06:46 BST Title: Fatalities after crowd fired upon near Gaza aid hub - reports Content: Barbara Plett UsherCorrespondent In the past few minutes, reports have started to emerge of another fatal incident near a distribution centre in Hamas-controlled Gaza. Civil Defense Agency spokesman Mahmoud Bassal says Israeli troops killed 19 people, including a woman, about 1km (0.6 miles) away from the site located in the southern part of the enclave. He says the Israelis opened fire with tanks and drones on thousands of Palestinians who had gathered near the al-Alam roundabout waiting to be granted access to the aid hub. It's roughly the same location as the shootings that occurred on Sunday, when the Hamas-run health ministry in Gaza said 31 people were killed and nearly 200 injured by Israeli fire. The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) denied shooting Palestinians in that incident, but a military official acknowledged soldiers had fired warning shots at what he called suspects who were approaching them. The IDF has not commented on today's reported incident, but the BBC has requested a response.

'His easygoing nature and generous spirit left a lasting impression on all who knew him.' LaCourt is survived by his wife, Tina LaCourt, his children, Marty LaCourt and Marissa Hogan, and stepchildren, Rachel Janda and Timmy Smith. UK traffic accident map: The worst areas for road incidents revealed

There were more than 120,000 road traffic casualties in Britain last year, including 1,600 fatalities, official figures show. Nearly 30,000 people were killed or severely injured from January to December 2024, according to provisional estimates from the Department for Transport (DfT). More than three in four (76 per cent) people killed in road traffic collisions were men, and 61 per cent of casualties of all severities were male, the DfT estimates. Among the four main road user groups — cars, pedestrians, motorcyclists, and cyclists — motorcyclists experienced the most significant change in fatalities. The number of motorcyclist deaths increased by 9 per cent in 2024 compared to 2023, according to the DfT. Some 343 riders lost their lives in crashes in 2024, up from 315 during the previous 12 months. There was also an increase in pedestrian deaths, up 2 per cent from 405 in 2023 to 413 in 2024. People aged 17–29 made up 24 per cent of road deaths and 28 per cent of all casualties, and those aged 70 and over were involved in 22 per cent of fatalities but just 8 per cent of overall casualties. The map below shows the number of road traffic casualties across all local authority areas in Great Britain: In total, there were 128,375 casualties of all severities last year – a 3 per cent decrease compared to 2023 – and 1,633 fatalities – a 1 per cent increase compared to the previous year. The number of people killed or seriously injured remained largely unchanged compared to 2023 at 29,537. The local authorities with the highest number of road traffic casualties: Kent - 3,921 Surrey - 3,145 Birmingham - 3,056 Lancashire - 2,992 Essex - 2,980 Hampshire - 2,925 Lincolnshire - 2,288 Hertfordshire - 2,270 West Sussex - 2,252 Norfolk - 2,157 AA president Edmund King said: 'Every death on our roads is a tragedy, and sadly we are still losing at least four people a day. 'If this level of loss was experienced on any other form of transport, there would be a national inquiry and public outcry. 'Yet, for some reason, we seem to accept this as the risk of moving around our communities. This should not be the case.' Mr King called for the government's upcoming road safety strategy to include 'bold action' such as harsher penalties for not wearing a seatbelt or drug driving. He also stressed the need to 'safeguard newly qualified drivers ' to ensure they feel confident on the road before 'exposing them to additional risks' such as carrying passengers of a similar age. The DfT was approached for comment.
