Police: Father, son suspected of murdering e-hailing driver in Ampang likely tortured him
KUALA LUMPUR, July 9 — The father and son suspected of being involved in the murder of an e-hailing driver are believed to have repeatedly abused the victim, said Ampang Jaya police chief ACP Mohd Azam Ismail. He added that this is following injuries found on the victim's body, besides those caused by an accident. 'Further investigations found that the injuries on the victim's body resulted from an accident and continuous abuse by the two suspects... no connection to Ah long (loan sharks),' he said in a statement today, adding that the victim is believed to be in debt to the suspects. Yesterday, Mohd Azam was reported to have said that the father and son, aged 73 and 36, were arrested between June 26 and 28, after a post-mortem examination of the victim found that there were elements of crime involved. Police received information regarding the death of the 37-year-old man at the suspects' house in Taman Pandan Perdana, Ampang, from Kuala Lumpur Hospital medical personnel at 7.16 pm on June 22. A post-mortem conducted at Ampang Hospital on June 23 found that there were criminal elements, with the victim's cause of death being a bacterial infection in the muscles due to injuries to the skin and bones. The suspects, both unemployed, were on remand for 14 days from June 27 until Thursday to assist in the investigation of the case under Section 302 of the Penal Code. — Bernama

Cruz Hewitt fumes at his tennis legend dad, Lleyton, as the young Aussie star suffers hot-tempered Wimbledon defeat
Cruz Hewitt took his frustrations out on former Wimbledon champion dad, Lleyton, during a hot-tempered second-round defeat in the boys singles. Australian Lleyton, who won the title in 2002, was on Court 5 to support his 16-year-old son as he fell to a 6-3, 6-0 to 11th seed to Oskari Paldanius. As the match slipped away from Cruz, the youngster got increasingly agitated towards his father, gesturing in his direction after almost every point – once even appearing to accuse Hewitt senior, who sat motionless under a cap and sunglasses for most of the contest, of 'acting for the cameras'. At one point after Lleyton, sporting a backwards cap in true Hewitt family fashion, tried to give him some words of wisdom from the side of court, Cruz responded: 'I tried that!'. Another piece of advice prompted the youngster to walk away shaking his head. When he hit one strong winner in the second set, he turned immediately to his dad and prodded his finger into his own chest. Cruz fired back at his team multiple times on the court on Tuesday, as they tried to offer up words of support and advice to help the youngster progress After his team tried to reassure him that everything was 'fine' as he faced break point at 3-0 in the second set, he snapped back: 'It's not fine, it's nearly four-love!' How different it was from the start of this tie when he took the second point of the match and produced a trademark Hewitt fist pump towards his team. 'Here you go, mate, all day!' Lleyton roared when Cruz, already in the top 50 junior ranks, broke back in the opening set. 'Great spots mate,' he cried at another winning point. How different, too, to Cruz's opening-round where he obliterated Russian Savva Rybkin 6-1, 6-2 inside 51 minutes. 'Dad was proud, it was great to have him there,' Cruz told The Sydney Morning Herald after his win. 'It was a great feeling. 'I've watched my dad play here for many years, and I've always wanted to play on these courts, so I was enjoying every moment. Hewitt (pictured) was beaten 6-3, 6-0 by 11th seed Oskari Paldanius. Despite the loss, he had gotten off to a fast start in the match, fist-bumping the air after taking the second point 'He just said: 'Now you can finally play on the courts and enjoy it', so it was a great day. 'There is nothing you can do about [who your dad is]. It's a little tough, but there are pros and cons, and you've just got to focus on the positives that come with it, so that's what I try and do.' Hewitt's victory followed his victory over world No 5 Jagger Leach, two years his senior and son of former Wimbledon champion Lindsay Davenport, at Roehampton a week ago.

Cops arrest father and son for alleged murder of e-hailing driver in Ampang after post-mortem reveals foul play
KUALA LUMPUR, July 8 — A man and his father have been arrested over the murder of a 37-year-old e-hailing driver, whose body was found in Taman Pandan Perdana, Ampang, on June 22. Ampang Jaya police chief Assistant Commissioner Mohd Azam Ismail said police initially classified the case as sudden death after receiving a call from a medical assistant at Hospital Kuala Lumpur at 7.16pm that evening. Police later confirmed the death at the scene, but a post-mortem at Ampang Hospital revealed necrotising soft tissue infections caused by skin and skeletal injuries, indicating foul play. The victim's body was discovered inside the home of one of the suspects, and the case was reclassified as murder under Section 302 of the Penal Code. According to The Star and New Straits Times, the 36-year-old suspect is the victim's best friend, and was arrested along with his 73-year-old father. 'We believe unpaid debts led to the murder,' Azam said, adding that police seized a bamboo cane and pliers believed to be linked to the case. The arrests took place between June 26 and 28, and both suspects tested negative for drugs and have no prior criminal records. The younger suspect has been remanded for 14 days from June 27 to July 10, while his father is remanded for 13 days from June 29 to July 11. Those convicted under Section 302 face the death penalty or up to 40 years in prison with a minimum of 12 strokes of the cane.

Ampang Jaya police chief Assistant Commissioner Mohd Azam Ismail said the case was initially treated as a sudden death after a call from a medical assistant at Hospital Kuala Lumpur at 7.16pm on June 22 reported a man's death at Jalan Perdana 6/5, according to the New Straits Times. Police confirmed the death at the scene, but a post-mortem at Ampang Hospital the following day uncovered necrotising soft tissue infections caused by skin and skeletal injuries. The victim's body was found in the home of one of the suspects, prompting the case to be reclassified as murder under Section 302 of the Penal Code. Investigators also seized a bamboo cane and an adjustable plier believed to be linked to the killing, Azam said. Both suspects tested negative for drugs and have no previous criminal records. The younger suspect has been remanded for 14 days from June 27 to July 10, while his father is remanded for 13 days from June 29 to July 11.
