Driver shot, attacked by crowd in L.A. nightclub car ramming identified by police
A man suspected of driving his car into a crowd waiting to get inside a nightclub in Los Angeles, injuring 36 people, has a criminal history that includes a conviction for felony battery, officials said Sunday. The driver, identified by police as Fernando Ramirez, 29, was attacked by bystanders after the crash early Saturday in east Hollywood and paramedics later found that he had been shot. Police were still searching for the suspected shooter, described as a man with a goatee in a blue Dodgers jacket. Ramirez, of San Clemente, Calif., was recovering and was expected to face a felony charge of assault with a deadly weapon. He could not be reached for comment and it wasn't known if he had an attorney. Police Capt. Ben Fernandes told KNBC-TV on Sunday that Ramirez was sentenced in 2020 for attacking a man outside of a Whole Foods grocery store in June 2019. He was on parole at the time of Saturday's crash, but it's unclear whether it was in connection with the 2019 attack or another case. Ramirez has had at least 11 criminal cases ranging from misdemeanours to felonies, KNBC reported. In January 2022, he was charged with felony domestic battery and entered a not guilty plea. That case remains open. A line of people — mostly women — were waiting to enter the Vermont Hollywood event venue around 2 a.m. local time when they were struck by a Nissan Versa that also hit a food vending cart and valet stand, fire Capt. Adam VanGerpen said Saturday. At least 36 people were treated for injuries including fractures and lacerations, police said Sunday without providing updates on their conditions. It was not immediately clear if Ramirez was shot before or after the crash.

Texans' Jimmie Ward 'will be vindicated' following felony assault arrest, attorney says
An attorney representing Houston Texans safety Jimmie Ward says the NFL player will be "vindicated" based on the facts of the case after he was arrested in Texas last week on a felony assault charge. Ward, 33, was arrested early Thursday morning and booked into the Montgomery County Jail. He was charged with assault on a family member by impeding breathing or circulation, which is a third-degree felony. He was released on a $30,000 bond. The Texans said in a statement at the time they were aware of the reports surrounding Ward's arrest, but had "no further comment" as they gathered more information. Attorney Steve Jackson told People this week that he believes Ward will be "vindicated" as they continue to investigate the allegations made against him. "We have been aware of the complaining witness for some time and her actions towards Jimmie Ward as well as another high profile sports figure," Jackson told the outlet. "It is sad that professional athletes and public figures have to endure things like this, but has seemingly become commonplace. But we will continue to thoroughly investigate this woman and her history, and believe that Jimmie will be vindicated." Ward spent the majority of his career playing for the San Francisco 49ers. In nine seasons with the organization, he registered seven interceptions and 451 tackles across 106 games. He entered the 2023 offseason as a free agent before signing a two-year, $13 million deal. Ward signed a one-year contract extension worth $10.5 million before the start of last season. In two seasons with the Texans, Ward appeared in 20 games and registered three interceptions and 98 tackles. According to The Houston Chronicle, Ward's attorneys filed a motion this week to modify his bond agreement because of the GPS ankle monitor, which they claim interferes with his profession. Modesto man convicted of domestic violence. Used son as shield during arrest
A 29-year-old Modesto man has been convicted of multiple charges including domestic violence, felony assault and child endangerment and faces up to 10 years in prison, according to the Stanislaus County District Attorney's Office. A jury found Isaiah Negrete guilty of a series of violent acts against his girlfriend, including strangling, punching and dragging her by her hair, prosecutors said in a news release. The woman suffered injuries in the assaults, which were part of an ongoing pattern of domestic abuse. When Modesto police officers attempted to arrest Negrete in October, he used his young son as a human shield to avoid being taken into custody, according to the DA's Office. Officers used nonlethal force to rescue the child and arrest Negrete. The case was prosecuted by Deputy District Attorney Vita Palazuelos. The Modesto Police Department investigated the crimes, and the DA's Victim Services Unit supported the victim throughout the case. Negrete has a long history of domestic violence, prosecutors said. He is scheduled to be sentenced July 30.
