Modesto man convicted of domestic violence. Used son as shield during arrest
A 29-year-old Modesto man has been convicted of multiple charges including domestic violence, felony assault and child endangerment and faces up to 10 years in prison, according to the Stanislaus County District Attorney's Office. A jury found Isaiah Negrete guilty of a series of violent acts against his girlfriend, including strangling, punching and dragging her by her hair, prosecutors said in a news release. The woman suffered injuries in the assaults, which were part of an ongoing pattern of domestic abuse. When Modesto police officers attempted to arrest Negrete in October, he used his young son as a human shield to avoid being taken into custody, according to the DA's Office. Officers used nonlethal force to rescue the child and arrest Negrete. The case was prosecuted by Deputy District Attorney Vita Palazuelos. The Modesto Police Department investigated the crimes, and the DA's Victim Services Unit supported the victim throughout the case. Negrete has a long history of domestic violence, prosecutors said. He is scheduled to be sentenced July 30.

Driver charged with hitting Johnston officer held without bail
JOHNSTON, R.I. (WPRI) — The Providence man accused of hitting a Johnston police officer with his car was arraigned Tuesday morning on multiple charges, including felony assault. Damian Peterson, 28, allegedly drove at the officer—which escalated into an officer-involved shooting—during a reported disturbance on April 26 in the parking lot of the Shell gas station on Hartford Avenue. PRIOR COVERAGE: Officer-involved shooting under investigation in Johnston In court, Johnston Detective Derek Patascandolo outlined the incident, saying officers responded around 11:30 p.m. and found Peterson sitting in a car backed into a parking space near the gas station. Officers learned he had an active state police warrant for obstruction and reckless driving, among other offenses. According to Patascandolo, Peterson appeared nervous and was making 'furtive movements,' prompting an officer to pull his cruiser in front of Peterson's car. As the officer got out of his vehicle, Peterson allegedly shifted into drive, despite verbal commands to stop and put the car in park. The officer then fired his service weapon. WATCH: Bodycam video shows officer-involved shooting in Johnston Patascandolo said Peterson drove toward the officer, swerving at him and slamming into his legs, which knocked him onto his own cruiser and then to the ground. The officer fired four more shots at Peterson's car. Police said Peterson was hit once in the stomach, causing him to lose control of the vehicle. He continued driving but ultimately crashed in front of a restaurant across the street, where he was arrested. Peterson was taken to Rhode Island Hospital for emergency surgery after Johnston police provided immediate medical assistance. MORE: 4 shots fired at suspect who hit Johnston officer with car During a search of his car, police reportedly found 1.5 grams of methamphetamine, 1.7 grams of fentanyl, and a glass pipe commonly used to smoke crack cocaine. Peterson is charged with felony assault with a dangerous weapon, assault on a police officer, reckless driving, obstruction, resisting arrest, disorderly conduct, and two counts of possession of controlled substances. He is being held as a bail violator and faces charges out of Johnston and from state police. Due to the nature of the felony charges, no plea was entered. The case was moved to superior court, where the state ordered Peterson held without bail. He's due back in court on May 13.
