Wildfire near Princeton B.C., sees evacuation order downgraded to an alert
Residents of nearly 30 properties near Princeton, B.C., who were forced to evacuate Sunday due to a nearby wildfire, are allowed to return home. The Regional District of Okanagan-Similkameen downgraded its evacuation order near August Lake and the Princeton Golf Club to an alert on Monday. It says that means residents should remain prepared to leave if the situation worsens. The August Lake wildfire is listed as 14 hectares in size and burning out of control by the B.C. Wildfire Service. That update comes after the service warned the Coastal Fire Centre is expected to get its first "outflow pattern" of the season, which could drive more significant fire behaviour. It says the pattern occurs when air flows out from the mountains toward the water, and will develop Monday and continue Tuesday in the region. Warm and dry conditions will persist: B.C. Wildfire Service The service says in a post on its website that winds are expected to moderate, although warm and dry conditions will persist early this week before a return to a typical southwesterly flow on Wednesday. It says the fire centre wants to warn the public about the potential for aggressive fire behaviour and asks anyone who sees a blaze to report it, as early detection is crucial to firefighting efforts. Cliff Chapman, director of wildfire operations for the service, told a news conference Monday that winds generally come off the ocean and push to the east. But, he said, an outflow pattern switches that direction and pulls wind toward the ocean, which can be problematic from a fire behaviour perspective. "Given the conditions that we've seen so far in the Coastal Fire Centre, we don't anticipate that to be dire, just because we have seen some [precipitation] in the system over the course of the last six to eight weeks," he said. Chapman said there are still lots of challenges, but the service is not seeing the potential for extreme fire behaviour. "Saying that, as we saw this weekend with the fires in the Kamloops Fire Centre, there are pockets where we can see that sort of high to extreme fire behaviour occur," he said, adding that resources are spread across the province so crews can attack any new fires quickly. Smoke in southern B.C. The B.C. Wildfire Service is reporting about 70 active fires burning across the province, 10 of which are in the Coastal Fire Centre. It says some areas of the province will see smokier conditions this week as a result of ongoing fires, with heavy amounts concentrated in the Fort Nelson area. "Southern B.C. will also see a smoky haze because of the Similkameen fires and shifting winds," the service's dashboard says.

Ryanair passengers injured after jumping from plane wing during fire scare
At least 18 Ryanair passengers were injured after they jumped from the aircraft wing in a panic during a fire alert on the runway in Mallorca. The flight was about to depart to Manchester on Saturday night from Palma airport when the crew sounded the alarm of a fire onboard the aircraft. A video shows passengers leaping from the aircraft wing onto the runway, with some falling on their fronts from a height onto the tarmac. Six people were taken to hospital by ambulances that arrived on the scene. A confused airport worker can be overheard telling a colleague over a walkie-talkie: 'Do you know the plane has emergency exits?' as the passengers were filmed fleeing the aircraft and jumping from the wing. 'Plane about to leave from apron 10 or eight, and now the people are jumping from the wing onto the ground,' he added, The Telegraph reported. 'Something's happening, something's happening, they're evacuating the plane. Now the firefighters are coming.' The emergency was brought under control, with most passengers able to leave the plane in an orderly fashion. One passenger onboard the flight, 56-year-old Denise Kelly, told the MailOnline that a member of the cabin crew ran along the aisle and told them to evacuate. She said it felt like a 'life or death situation' and only jumped from the wing because she feared for her life, adding that the cabin crew told them to leave behind their belongings in case the 'plane exploded'. Ms Kelly hit the tarmac and said she suffered a broken right heel, fractured left wrist and smashed elbow, saying she has been left 'completely traumatised' by the incident. Ryanair later said the fire alert had been a false alarm. The airline said in a statement to The Independent: 'This flight from Palma to Manchester discontinued take-off due to a false fire warning light indication. 'Passengers were disembarked using the inflatable slides and returned to the terminal. While disembarking, a small number of passengers encountered very minor injuries (ankle sprains, etc) and crew requested immediate medical assistance. 'To minimise disruption to passengers, we quickly arranged a replacement aircraft to operate this flight, which departed Palma at 7.05am this morning. 'We sincerely apologise to affected passengers for any inconvenience caused.' A spokesperson for Mallorca's emergency services said Saturday morning: 'We received an alert about a fire on a plane on the ground at Palma airport at 12.36am today. 'Four ambulances were sent to the scene. Eighteen people were injured and received medical assistance of whom six were taken to hospital,' they added, describing the injuries as 'minor'.

Major gorse fire continuing to burn in Co Wexford
A major gorse fire which broke out in Co Wexford continues to burn on Monday morning. The blaze broke out on Tara Hill in Gorey at around 2pm on Sunday. Advertisement Seven units from Wexford and Wicklow Fire Services have been battling the blaze overnight along with gardaí and local farmers to bring it under control. Wexford County Council's fire service has also ensured that several water tankers. Water has also been drawn from the river Ahare. The blaze initially seemed under control, but it intensified overnight due to nearby sea breezes. Dry weather conditions are making it easier for the fire to spread. Malcolm Byrne, North Wexford TD said the blaze is 'deeply worrying'. An assessment is expected to be made on Monday on whether helicopter assistance is needed. There is already a significant impact to wildlife and the environment in the area. As a result of no significant rainfall in the past month, the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine is warning that there is a high fire risk or status orange alert. The orange warning has been in effect since 3 pm last Friday and will last until midday on Tuesday. According to the Department, current weather patterns indicate a high fire risk 'in all areas' where hazardous fuels such as dead grasses and shrub fuels such as heather and gorse exist.
