Belfast TradFest: Hundreds in traditional music flash mob bring park to life

Hundreds of musicians have taken part in an outdoor traditional music session in Belfast city centre as part of the city's Tradfest events. The usually calm and quiet Cathedral Gardens quickly transformed with a joyful jig performed by over 900 traditional musicians in a spontaneous flash mob on Wednesday musicians of all ages and skill levels who took part are attending the Belfast TradFest summer school, taking place in Ulster University's Belfast campus. Thousands of people are expected in Belfast for the week-long celebration of Irish traditional music. Belfast TradFest, now in its seventh year, is running until 3 Artistic Director of Belfast Tradfest Dónal O'Connor led the 900 strong group in a rendition of 'The Blarney Pilgrim'."We thought it would be a nice idea to have a spontaneous session and bring the students out of their classrooms and come together to play a tune, dance and sing together."I don't think I've ever been in the company of so many traditional musicians in one place, and the beauty of the summer school is that there are people of all ages, from five years old, to our oldest student being 85."He added: "Traditional music brings people together, with young people learning from the old and old learning from the young". Mr O'Connor also explained the intentional choice behind the tune "The Blarney Pilgrim"."It made famous by the band Planxty in the 70s, but is often a tune that many people learn at the early stages of their music learning career, it is a brilliant unifier." Éimear, 21, has been playing the flute for nine years and said it "has been great to see everyone of all ages and all abilities come together to play a tune". Nellie, a summer school student, told BBC News NI the importance of the music."I live in England and have come over specifically for TradFest. I come from a very musical family and just love playing and listening to traditional music.""Trad music for me is a way to communicate. I can go in to any pub and have something in common with someone else there, it creates an instant human connection over a shared love." Family influence also plays a big part in many of the young people's journeys with their is the case for Eimhear, 13, from Portadown who has been playing the harp for four years."I started learning the harp because of my great granda... there's always music being played in my house and at family parties. My uncles and cousins also play so I wanted to do it too."

Sarah Chalke reveals her wish for upcoming 'Scrubs' revival: 'I don't know how that works into the storyline'

The actress, who played Dr. Elliot Reid on the medical sitcom, shared her dream plot point for the revival while visiting EW's video suite with her "Rick and Morty" costars at San Diego Comic-Con. This potential Scrubs storyline is just what the doctor ordered. No, literally. Sarah Chalke, who starred as Dr. Elliot Reid across all nine seasons of the celebrated medical sitcom, is sharing the toe-tapping plot point that she'd love to see included in the show's forthcoming reboot.'I can't tease any plot details because I don't know any because it's all so new," Chalke explains while visiting Entertainment Weekly's San Diego Comic-Con video suite for Rick and Morty. "Someone just asked me if I have any requests for the plots and I just said, 'Flash mob. I wanna be in the flash mob.' So, I don't know how that works into the storyline, but I think there's a way." After hearing Chalke's dream storyline, her Rick and Morty costars — Chris Parnell, Ian Cardoni, Harry Belden, and Spencer Grammer — immediately jump up from their seats and begin busting a move. "You wanted a flash mob?" Parnell, who plays Jerry, jokes. "Here we go, guys." But, in true Rick and Morty fashion, the well-intentioned gesture quickly goes off the rails. "No, that's not how we practiced it, you guys!" Belden shouts. "It was step left, then turn. Alright. Alright. Cut! Let's go again!" Still, Chalke can't help but be charmed by their efforts. "Not the flash mob I was dreaming of," she teases, before turning back to her costars. "You guys are trying to make my dreams come true? This is why I love all of them so much." Earlier this month, Entertainment Weekly confirmed that Chalke and fellow Scrubs alum Donald Faison, who played Dr. Christopher Turk, would be joining Zach Braff in the upcoming revival. Chalkecelebrated the news on Instagram by posting a throwback photo of her, Braff, and Faison with the caption: "YAY!!!!" In addition to the trio, original series creator Bill Lawrence is also scrubbing in as an executive producer on the revival. "Scrubs means so very much to me," he said in a statement. "So excited for the chance to get the band back together." An official logline for the series reveals that it will follow Braff's J.D. and Faison's Turk as they "scrub in together for the first time in a long time," adding, "medicine has changed, interns have changed, but their bromance has stood the test of time. Characters new and old navigate the waters of Sacred Heart with laughter, heart and some surprises along the way." The original Scrubs, which ran from 2001 until 2010, followed the trials and tribulations of J.D. and his pals as they worked at the fictional Sacred Heart Hospital. Mayhem breaks out at a Chicago pool party as mob hurls fireworks and shoves the lifeguard into the water

Shocking footage shows the moment hundreds of unruly teens in Chicago slung fireworks around and shove a lifeguard in the water as they overran a public pool. The 'flash mob' of around 200 youngsters swarmed Sunset Park & Pool in Glen Ellyn on Saturday and forced their way past security to pack out the area. Lifeguard Christine Giunta-Mayer was seen in the clip as she's shoved into the pool by the mob who had taunted her as she scrambled to get out of the water. View this post on Instagram A post shared by @duffyclipzz Stunned residents told the DuPage Policy Journal that the group also brought marijuana and alcohol to the pool, and stole other attendees' belongings. A local teenager said: 'They were drinking and smoking weed and swearing a lot. Someone threw a lit cigar into the pool. 'I saw Miller Lite bottles and girls drinking on-the-rocks cosmos... They were taking people's stuff and moving it from their pool chairs.' Glen Ellyn PD arrived soon after to disband the rowdy crowd, and one person was reportedly arrested for throwing a firework 'in close proximity to pedestrians'. The group appeared to overwhelm the pool after first gathering at the Downtown Napier Beach, according to a social media ad promoting the 'flash mob'. The promo said: 'We're bringing 31st Beach to the 'burbs'. No fighting!' A Facebook post from resident Patrick Sandusky said that police closed down the pool as they tried to bring the chaotic scenes under control. Sandusky said: 'The Sunset Pool has been overwhelmed by out of town kids. 'Fireworks fired into pool. It's a TikTok meet up take over according to police I just spoke to... Kids pushed past the gates. Lots of drinking and weed in the parking lot. Hundreds and hundreds of kids. No joke. Pushed manager into the pool.' The manager who was pushed into the water was identified by the DuPage Journal as Giunta-Mayer, who also coached Glenbard West Hilltoppers' volleyball team. The day after the 'flash mob', attendees at the pool were mandated to have a physical pool pass in order to enter. In a statement on Sunday, the pool's management said: 'We worked closely with the Glen Ellyn Police Department and surrounding agencies to ensure the facility was safely cleared. 'We are grateful to our quick-thinking and professional Sunset Pool staff for how they handled the situation. 'The safety of our patrons and staff remains our top priority. We're currently reviewing the incident internally and assessing any operational adjustments as needed.'
