Saudi Arabia's KSrelief performs over 4,484 successful eye surgeries in Pakistan
ISLAMABAD: Saudi Arabia's King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Center (KSrelief) performed over 4,484 successful eye surgeries across Pakistan under a voluntary program to provide free medical services to the underprivileged, state-run media reported this week. The state-run Pakistan Television (PTV) reported on Thursday that KSrelief successfully concluded 11 comprehensive eye treatment camps in Pakistan under the 'Noor Saudi Volunteer Program 2025.' These camps, PTV said, were organized in collaboration with the Al-Basar International Foundation and Ibrahim Eye Hospital Karachi. The camps were held to provide free medical services to underprivileged individuals suffering from blindness or other eye-related ailments, it added. These camps were organized in both the urban and rural areas of Pakistan's Sindh, Balochistan, Punjab, and Azad Jammu and Kashmir regions where access to quality eye care services remains limited, PTV said. 'During the campaign, medical teams examined a total of 43,294 patients and performed over 4,484 successful surgeries,' the state television said. 'Additionally, 11,050 eyeglasses were distributed free of charge, along with the provision of prescribed medications to deserving patients.' It said these camps were conducted in various Pakistani cities such as Karachi, Matli, Kandhkot, Shikarpur, Hyderabad, Naseerabad, Kharan, Khuzdar, Jhelum and Rawalakot. The camps enabled thousands of patients to benefit from specialized eye treatments due to which many were able to regain their vision. 'This initiative reflects the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia's strong humanitarian commitment and its dedication to enhancing the lives of people affected by visual impairments,' PTV said. KSrelief has implemented hundreds of projects in Pakistan worth millions of dollars to improve the lives of vulnerable communities. Efforts include emergency relief for natural disasters, and long-term projects addressing food security, health care, education, and shelter. The Saudi charity organization has one of the largest humanitarian budgets available to any aid agency across the world, which has allowed its officials to undertake a wide variety of projects in more than 80 countries. Pakistan is the fifth largest beneficiary of its aid and humanitarian activities and has greatly benefited from its assistance since the 2022 monsoon floods.

Greens promise free doctor visits, childcare but new taxes, higher borrowing
The Green Party has laid out its alternative Budget. Photo: RNZ The Green Party has laid out its alternative Budget, pledging free GP visits and free childcare funded through new taxes and increased borrowing. It comes just over a week before the coalition government reveals its spending plans in Budget 2025. On Wednesday, the Greens released a suite of proposed policies and taxes - some new, some previously campaigned on. They include a wealth tax, a private jet tax, ending interest deductibility for landlords, restoring the 10 year 'bright-line' test, doubling minerals royalties and changes to ACC levies. The plan would see net debt climb from 45 percent of GDP to above 53 percent by the 2028/29 financial year. According to the Greens' calculations, the new revenue streams would fund a free public health service providing GP and nursing services, free annual dental check-ups and basic dental care, as well as the restoring free prescriptions. On the childcare front, it would give 20 hours free care per week for children from six months until school age, and cap fees at $10 per day for hours above the 20 per week entitlement in the short term, transitioning over time to free provision. The alertnative Budget also includes an "Income Guarantee" which would ensure anyone out of work or studying has an income of at least $395 a week, plus top-ups of $140 a week for sole parents. Green Party co-leader Chlöe Swarbrick said the alternative budget showed how peoples' lives would be better under a government run by them. "This is a budget for a country that belongs to and works for New Zealanders." Swarbrick said the Party believed in fairness and common sense. "A Green Government will rapidly reduce emissions, reduce the cost of living and improve our quality of life." She said her policies could be funded by taxing New Zealand's wealthiest people fairly. The party also planned to reinstate the jobs for nature programme which was set up during the Covid-19 pandemic and is set to end in next month. It would also require farming to be included in the emissions trading scheme (ETS) this year and remove forestry from the ETS. There would be funding for a range of regional rail lines across the country and light rail lines in Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch. The Green Party planned to go on a tour across the country with their alternative budget this month. Providing free dental care to those in the area
Rapid City, S.D. (KELO) — Dental care is something many people are unable to afford, so a local dentist is stepping up to help. This Friday, Orchard Meadows Family Dental in Rapid City will be providing free dental care to those in the surrounding area as soon as they open their doors. The three main issues these dentists will target are providing fillings, extractions and cleanings based on what is needed most. 'When you have a dental cavity or fractured tooth or whatever, that leads to dental pain right. So really all you can do to alleviate the pain on a permanent basis is to treat the problems, not just the symptoms. We can prescribe pain medication all day but it's not going to treat the problem,' Orchard Meadows Family Dental Owner Mark Garner said. The goal is to get people out of discomfort or pain, and to do so free of charge. As soon as the doors open Friday morning, the dentists here will be working their best to get everybody in and out as efficiently and making sure they are healthy on their way out with their teeth. Now every year over this event they help on average from 70 to 100 people each year. Dental pain can prevent people from living their everyday lives and interfere with eating and talking. 'It all starts in your mouth and if we don't have a good oral environment, then it affects everything else. So Friday what we're trying to do is help people get out of discomfort, so that they can go about their lives normally and they can show up to work and they can do those kinds of things without having toothache,' Garner said. The event has been going on for around a decade, and they have helped nearly 1,000 people with dental needs. They're also looking for ways to expand this event in the future.
