Saudi Arabia's KSrelief performs over 4,484 successful eye surgeries in Pakistan
The state-run Pakistan Television (PTV) reported on Thursday that KSrelief successfully concluded 11 comprehensive eye treatment camps in Pakistan under the 'Noor Saudi Volunteer Program 2025.' These camps, PTV said, were organized in collaboration with the Al-Basar International Foundation and Ibrahim Eye Hospital Karachi.
The camps were held to provide free medical services to underprivileged individuals suffering from blindness or other eye-related ailments, it added. These camps were organized in both the urban and rural areas of Pakistan's Sindh, Balochistan, Punjab, and Azad Jammu and Kashmir regions where access to quality eye care services remains limited, PTV said.
'During the campaign, medical teams examined a total of 43,294 patients and performed over 4,484 successful surgeries,' the state television said. 'Additionally, 11,050 eyeglasses were distributed free of charge, along with the provision of prescribed medications to deserving patients.'
It said these camps were conducted in various Pakistani cities such as Karachi, Matli, Kandhkot, Shikarpur, Hyderabad, Naseerabad, Kharan, Khuzdar, Jhelum and Rawalakot. The camps enabled thousands of patients to benefit from specialized eye treatments due to which many were able to regain their vision.
'This initiative reflects the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia's strong humanitarian commitment and its dedication to enhancing the lives of people affected by visual impairments,' PTV said.
KSrelief has implemented hundreds of projects in Pakistan worth millions of dollars to improve the lives of vulnerable communities. Efforts include emergency relief for natural disasters, and long-term projects addressing food security, health care, education, and shelter.
The Saudi charity organization has one of the largest humanitarian budgets available to any aid agency across the world, which has allowed its officials to undertake a wide variety of projects in more than 80 countries. Pakistan is the fifth largest beneficiary of its aid and humanitarian activities and has greatly benefited from its assistance since the 2022 monsoon floods.

RIYADH: Saudi aid agency KSrelief has signed a memorandum of cooperation with the Children with Disabilities Association in Riyadh, according to a Saudi Press Agency report. It was signed by Prince Sultan bin Salman, chairman of the association's board of directors, and Dr. Abdullah Al-Rabeeah, the supervisor general at KSrelief. The agreement aims to enhance collaboration between the two parties in delivering rehabilitation services for individuals with disabilities, as well as providing relief and humanitarian assistance internationally. Pakistan reports two new polio cases, taking 2025 tally to 21
PESHAWAR: Pakistan's National Institute of Health (NIH) reported two new cases of the poliovirus on Monday, taking the total number of cases of the disease reported this year to 25 as Islamabad struggles to stem its spread of the infection. Polio is a highly infectious and incurable disease that can cause lifelong paralysis. Experts say the only effective protection is through repeated doses of the Oral Polio Vaccine (OPV) for every child under the age of five, alongside timely completion of all routine immunizations. The two new cases were reported from Pakistan's southern Sindh province, in a 21-month-old girl from Badin district, and in a 72-month-old girl from district Kohistan in northwestern Pakistan. 'With these detections, the total number of polio cases in Pakistan in 2025 has reached 21–including 13 from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, six from Sindh, and one each from Punjab and Gilgit-Baltistan,' Pakistan's polio program said in a statement. The program said continued detection of polio cases shows that children remain at risk in areas with low vaccine acceptance. It said a Sub-National Polio Vaccination Campaign will take place from Sept. 1-7, targeting more than 28 million children under the age of five, in 99 districts across all provinces and regions. He said the campaign in southern KP will be conducted from Sept. 15, adding that the goal was to ensure every child in these districts receives the vaccine to protect them from polio. 'Parents and caregivers are strongly urged to ensure their children receive the polio vaccine during this and every campaign,' the statement said. Over the past year, the polio program has conducted six high-quality vaccination campaigns, four of them nationwide, each reaching over 45 million children. Pakistan and Afghanistan are the only two countries where polio remains endemic. Islamabad made significant progress in curbing the virus, with annual cases dropping from around 20,000 in the early 1990s to just eight in 2018. Pakistan reported six cases in 2023 and only one in 2021 but the country saw an intense resurgence of the poliovirus in 2024, with 74 cases reported. Efforts to eradicate the virus have been repeatedly undermined by vaccine misinformation and resistance from some religious hard-liners, who claim immunization is a foreign plot to sterilize Muslim children or a cover for Western espionage. Militant groups have frequently targeted polio vaccination teams and the security personnel assigned to protect them, particularly in KP and Balochistan.

One dead, 21 injured as train derails in eastern Pakistan
ISLAMABAD: One person was killed while 21 others were injured when four bogies of a Karachi-bound passenger train derailed near Lodhran city in eastern Pakistan on Sunday, the railways ministry said. The accident happened after the brakes of the Karachi-bound Awam Express, which operates from the southern port city to the northwestern Peshawar, failed near the Lodhran Railway station in Punjab province on Sunday. 'According to reports, one passenger died and 21 passengers were injured,' the railways ministry said in a statement. It added that two passengers were critically injured and were being provided treatment at the Bahawalpur Hospital. The statement said passengers who suffered minor injuries are being treated at the District Headquarters Hospital in Lodhran. The divisional superintendent of the nearby Multan city and medical teams reached the accident site immediately and are engaged in rescue operations, the ministry added. Railways Minister Muhammad Hanif Abbasi took notice of the incident, directing authorities to ensure all possible treatment is provided to the injured passengers and submit a report regarding the incident within seven days. 'Railway staff have been instructed to complete rescue work quickly and restore the down track,' the statement said. 'Passengers of the affected train have been dispatched to their destinations by an alternative train.' Rail transport remains a critical but underfunded part of Pakistan's public infrastructure. The Pakistan Railways network stretches over 7,700 kilometers and connects major cities, yet it has struggled for decades with outdated technology, frequent delays and safety issues due to a lack of investment and mismanagement. In recent years, successive governments have pledged to revitalize the sector. Recent initiatives have included track rehabilitation, procurement of new locomotives and the expansion of digital ticketing systems.
